Disapointment ,even more so having read the rave reviews , Beer choice really disapointing , only LP , Bass , and Butcombe , the latter of which wasn't that great , food was good , and staff friendly , did walk up the hill , but not sure if I would again based on beer performance , crying out for a good guest beer . Plenty of pints west hanging about so maybe beer choice reflects mentality of clientele , perhaps should concentrate on what members need not what they want 5/10 beatles38 - 31 Oct 2009 09:29 |
I can only really echo what others have said - a proper olde worlde pub with bags of character and some great beers. There's a small seating area out the front which is a fantastic spot on a summer's evening with some glimpses of fantastic views between the trees. Good choice of ciders on tap - Blackthorn, Black Rat, Taunton Traditional and Ashton Press. Blackthorn - 3 Sep 2009 10:03 |
Paid a return visit to the Miner's Rest and was a bit disappointed. Let me set out the positive things first. To me, the main plus about this pub is its character. It is a true original and must be visited at least once. From the dart board, the beat-up piano in the corner, to the miners' lanterns on the walls, this place feels like a walk a few steps back in time. Magic. The second plus is the drink. They serve some excellent brews. Third, the staff are great people -- friendly. On the negative side, current construction work next door wrecks the atmosphere a bit. There used to be a great place to sit outdoors in their apple orchard, but that's all been fenced off with wire so the amazing views are gone. Shame about that, but it won't make much difference once winter sets in. Finally, if you are not familiar to the old codgers who spend a lot of time in this pub, be prepared for a bit of taunting or a cold shoulder from them if you are foreign or not white. I have received jeers and comments every time I've visited this pub. It can feel a little less than comfortable, so be warned and arm yourself with a sense of humour and a passion for experiencing life in all its weird and wonderful manifestations. Remember, it's still worth a visit. Either the old codgers will get used to me, I'll develop a thick skin, or I'll just end up going somewhere else. popokimags - 24 Aug 2009 09:21 |
a traditonal olde worlde pub quaint and welcoming i really liked my butcombe and liked the stillage of ales on the side.tried the ploughmans a large plateful.as were the other meals in our group.. easily a couple of pounds cheaper than the norm, although they looked abit amateurish they were tasty and plentiful i would say a little too large.but that's no bad thing,,all in all a good place to go as the other writers comments state and would agree. james55westhead - 25 Jul 2009 17:42 |
Up a steep hill but well well worth the heart attack. Not as welcoming as the Bird in Hand but by no means unfriendly. One of those pubs that too much TLC would spoil. It is an understatement to say the Butcombe was stupendous. Pride and Bass were also on,though on stillage so I'm glad I hit the jackpot on the Butcombe. Get on the bus and experience. Well done. an_ecunemical_matter - 16 Jun 2009 21:27 |
