| Jan 2013 Excellent Sunday lunch, Roast Beef, five fresh vegetables, ample portions, good roast potatoes. two drinks, two courses two coffees - £31 the lot, for two of us. | Jan 2012 New couple in charge who have come from Chesterfield. Doom Bar and Butcombe on. Both fine. "Pub Grub" but pleasant enough and not expensive, smallish portions. Menu extensive. Lunching with a group who like their beer and food. They elected to return next month which says it all. Bad time to take a pub over so this couple deserve a visit and some support. | Feb 2011 This pub has had a gentle refurb (not overdone) and is again under Mike Lawless who used to run it (and sold it) around ten years ago. Been there several times since it re-opened. Only one beer on (Butcome last time) as landlord says he wants to keep it moving, will put more on in the summer. Fairly lengthy pub grub menu with clearly home cooked steak pie. | Tried this pub now with an old friend who had been there in the past, He said that it had been cleaned up and enjoyed the experience. Have to agree wih some salient points in Blackkthorns review. And, for me find the doing of paperwork and laptop on the go whilst the clientelle are there very off putting and bad organising.This was situate in the bar area adjacent the kitchen which made it appear a No Go Area.The lack of table menus didn't go down well with some people that came in. The blackboard seemed varied and, crowded. My Butcombe came aok but, the head soon disappeared.On the food side, this came piping hot and of the homemade type.The Dauphinois were turning grey/black needs to be fresh made the potato choice chips or jacket otherwise.All i all a favotable offering but for me over priced for what we had and, whats on offer in other parts of the county. james55westhead - 11 Nov 2010 05:03 |
| Great to see this pub re-opened after being closed for a few months. Not much seems to have changed, just a lick of paint on the outside and a general tidy-up, and I think the smart slate tiled floor in the main bar may be new. There�s a good view of Blagdon Lake from the bottom of the car park, and a small outside patio area. Inside it�s got a cosy country pub ambience with a carpeted bar area off to the right with an attractive stone fireplace, and another carpeted area off to the left more geared up for dining with several of the tables being reserved. Lots of horse brasses around the place, a couple of attractive stained glass windows and lots of pictures on the wall complete the country pub feel. It was very busy on a recent Wednesday evening visit, with most tables being taken by diners. I got the impression that most of the punters were locals checking out the place to see what it�s like since it re-opened about three weeks ago. The couple running it were friendly and helpful, although they seemed to get easily distracted and as a consequence service at the bar could be a little erratic. There was a decent pub grub menu chalked up on a board with a good selection at reasonable prices. We tried the lasagne and the Thai chilli chicken and both were very good. There is a separate board with a selection of wines chalked on it. Beer choice was a slightly disappointing Butcombe and Doom Bar, although there were four pumps on the bar so hopefully they may get some more on in time. The solitary cider was Blackthorn. Interestingly the Guinness was canned rather than draught, and apparently came out the can flat. It was then placed on a small tray, attached to what looked like a Guinness font, which blasted it with ultrasonic sound waves to release the nitrogen stored within it. It all sounds impressive and certainly produced a creamy head within a few seconds, but whether it actually tasted any good I wouldn�t like to say. I�ll leave that to someone who actually likes the stuff. All in all I would highly recommend this pub if you�re looking for food. As for just popping in for a beer, it�s perhaps not quite such a good option due to the limited choice of drinks and potentially limited seating if it�s full of diners, but it�s still a very pleasant spot with friendly hosts.
