Almost 3 years on from my last visit and I have to say that the Robin Hood remains the best pub in Amblecote. It was just as busy as our last visit with all tables in the front bar taken. We were relegated to the paved terrace at the rear, which was also busy despite the temperature starting to drop a bit on this Saturday evening. The ale selection was better than last time - Holdens Golden Glow, Bathams Bitter, Titanic Plum Porter, Pardoes Netherton Pale Ale, Purity Mad Goose, Wye Valley HPA, St Austell Proper Job, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Enville Ginger Beer & Exmoor Gold. Cider was Thatchers Heritage, Mr Whiteheads Rum Cask & Gwynt y Ddraig Dog Dancer. Increasing my rating to an 8/10. blue_scrumpy - 5 Oct 2015 19:10 |
Marginally the best of the 4 Amblecote pubs we tried yesterday. There is a good selection of ales - Salopian Oracle, Bradfield Farmers Blonde, Holdens Golden Glow, Enville Ginger Beer, Bathams Bitter, Six Bells Supper & Blackwater Hair of the Dog. Thatchers Heirtage Cider was on an 8th handpull. It's a reasonably dark but fairly pleasant interior and it stretches back a little further than you initially suspect, with further small rooms being used by diners to the rear. Nice pub. If I had one criticism, it would be the lack of a dark beer. None were to be found at all over the 20 or so handpulls in Amblecote yesterday, which was a little disappointing. Neverthless, I would recommend a visit to this pub and to incorporate into a small crawl of the area. blue_scrumpy - 14 Oct 2012 12:10 |
What a truly fine pub this is. Seven beers on, a wide range, reasonably priced, and those I tried were in fine condition. The staff were pleasant and the customers friendly. If every pub was like this the world would be a much better place, djw - 29 Feb 2012 00:01 |
Nice 'locals' pub, very busy on the Saturday evening we visited and it was standing room only which wasn't very comfortable given that the pub is quite small. There was a rear room given over to dining and this was empty at the time we were there, always annoying when you've travelled especially. The beer however was excellent, we had Kelham Island 'Pale Rider', Enville's 'Enville Ale', Salopian 'Up for the Cup' and a Craddocks. There's also Bathams on. We thought the quality was excellent, but all were on the sweeter side and more of a balanced range would have been nice. Oddly, the beer pump area is very poorly lit. Really liked the Robin Hood, but with beer this good, it would be lovely to see the dining area at least partially opened to the many eager drinkers. Roy22 - 28 Nov 2011 18:56 |
In the vicinity following mooring up our narrowboat nearby, we were ion the market not only for good ale pubs, but also one that could serve decent grub. After a bit of a trying schlep up the hill, we finally happened upon the Robin Hood, which immediately exuded a feeling of liveliness and good cheer. It is an attractive, double-fronted exterior and the front rooms have the cosy feel of your own living room, without being bland. Note the impressive and continuous row of bottled beers around the top of the walls. Both punters and staff appeared friendly, and we keenly engrossed ourselves in the range of 5 interesting ales, which covered a considerable range of styles and strengths. Forgive me for not remembering them now, but this was one of 25 or so we visited in a week! I can say that they were found in excellent nick though. Food-wise, there was a similarly broad range of hearty dishes. Some of these, such as the chicken stuffed with black pudding covered with a stilton sauce, err on the rich side and it won't suit everyone's palate, but despite some initial doubts the quality of these dishes proved to be high. We ate in the restaurant area in which one receives waiter service from a barman, who must've been increasingly busy with drinks orders as the pub started to fill up. Overall, I really rather enjoyed myself here, and it is only a shame that I probably won't be in this locality again for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless I would not hesitate recommending to those of you who are and who enjoy generous good value grub and good ale that you should investigate the Robin Hood ASAP. TWG - 27 Sep 2010 17:59 |
