user reviews of Ye Old Sparrow Hawk, Fence

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited here at lunch time a few weeks back.

At the bar there were 6 pumps on, mainly the same brewery (Reedley Hallows) but 1 was different.

I went for a pint of the New Laund Dark at 4.4% which was a reasonable £3. Very pleasant - I was worried it may have been a bit bland but it was not at all. Clearly well kept too.

I stayed for a second pint and at the bar was asked if I would like the same again - little things like this make you feel valued as a customer. This time I went for the Blonde Spring Special by Worsthorne. This one 3.9% and a little more expensive at £3.20. Another nice pint.

A very nice pub indeed.

Lovely, clean, family friendly country pub with good selection for beers. I do a lot of walking with the Family and Dog and previously we feel we have to avoid some pubs in this area because of their attitude (will happily take your money if you are eating, but want you straight out after). Spoke to the staff here, very friendly and happy for us to just sit outside and have a drink whilst watching the world go by.

I've drunk here many times over the years - one of those places you can file under 'always dependable'. A vast, sprawling old inn, it is heavily geared towards food, but there is plenty of space for drinkers, inside as well as out (the extensive front seating area has lovely views over the hills towards Burnley). A good mix of local and national ales on the bar - Draught Bass, GK IPA, Thwaites Original, and a couple from Bolton brewers Bank Top (Flat Cap and Blonde). This time around I plumped for a pint of Bass, served in the sort of condition that almost makes you forget the 2.90 price tag.

Visited this pub before going on to the football. Staff were friendly and very accomodating for a group of football fans suddenly decending on them. Beer was good offering 5 real ales and food was excellant although slightly on the expensive side - 11.95 for fish and chips. However it was areally comfortable pub with well kept beer and whose staff were helpful to the point of giving us directions as to the best place to park for the match. If we are back up this way it is certainly a pub to which we shall return.

The Sparrowhawk in Fence is a country pub serving fresh food, cask ales and decent wine. They source local fresh ingredients for their chefs to prepare classic British dishes, sometimes with a twist to suit many tastes. They also take the same care with their beer and try, where possible, to keep them as local as they can. They serve food every lunch time and evening and all day at the weekends and they also have an extensive wine list, many of which are by the glass. Booking is always recommended.
