If you're after a good hearty bit of pub grub then I'd recommend it. It's light years ahead of where it was a couple of years ago when I last went it. It's not fussy or fine dining so if you're looking for that then I'd suggest going elsewhere. Good pub atmosphere, well cooked good honest food and the beers decent. Worth a go. jraw123 - 8 Sep 2013 01:55 |
I have visited the Whitakers for sunday lunch several times since the new landlady took over. Staff and the landlady were working very hard to get the pub underway as you do in a new job, we've all been there. The carvery is excellent, good quality meat with a choice of fresh local vegetables. The service was excellent with a nice ambience. All the staff seem very pleasant and can't do enough for you. Perhaps you should give it a try and support a nice local family in their new enterprise. sundaydiner - 18 Jul 2013 21:36 |
The previous review for the whitakers is a load of hogwash and factual inaccuracies. The new landlady and her HUSBAND are doing a magnificent job to turn around a place that had become as quiet as the cemetery across the road. Rather than point out slight teething problems, the reviewer should have concentrated on the good points. The food may bot be up to Heston Blumanthal standards but this is a pub and serves good honest pub food at fair price. As for the suggestion that there was friction between the management and staff, I can say that all the staff appear happy with the new regime. And as for the language getting a bit "fruity" from time to time, perhaps the reviewer overlooks the fact that this iis a pub, not a kindergarten, and he/she should expect an adult atmosphere. In conclusion I would say that I do not have any idea why this reviewer feels he/she has some sort of axe to grind, but this is a good honest pub run by good honest people whose emphasis is to make this a place local people will want to go. My friends and I would not drink there regularly if it were anything else. So don't pay too much attention to what tomosser has to say - give it a go yourself. You are guaranteed a warm welcome, a good pint, and good food at a fair price. hopalong_cassidy - 23 May 2013 11:56 |
I have visited the Whitakers a few times and it was a dull lifeless place with poor food. So I was quite intrigued when I learned that it was being taken on by a new landlady - who had told everyone she was going to make it so much better. It seems that she, her father and her younger daughter are going to run it with the help of a couple of the staff who have been there a while. We were told it was going to be a good "local" run by the family for families. Well, all I can say is, that yes the food is a bit better than it was - but it still has a long way to go to match some other pub eating places close by. As for the attitude of the management - this was nothing short of disgraceful. The landlady used the "F" word constantly to abuse staff and the equipment - and she was rude and abrupt with customers. Her father seemed just happy to stay out of the way. The daughter worked well - even though she had no experience and the barman - who I am told - has been there for years looked about to drop he was so hard pressed - not to mention being sworn at by his boss. This place has a long way to go to be worth another visit and I will think twice before letting my young children in there with me because of the rude and abusive example set by the lady of the house. Avoid this shambles of a place! tomosser - 21 May 2013 12:24 |
