To say that this pub is geared towards food is a significant understatement. It would be my local, but for the attitude of the staff - if you're dropping in for a drink (i.e. no food), they couldn't make you feel less welcome.

We moved to Wells about 6 years ago from Lewes in Sussex, which has, IMHO, some of the best pubs in the UK. I've been into the Fountain twice. Once, I was made to feel extremely unwelcome as I ordered a drink, and had the temerity not to eat food here, and second time for the same reason - I'd presumed I'd picked a 'bad' night, but no. My wife has had the same experience when meeting girlfriends for drinks, so its not an expectation issue.

A real shame. I won't be back for a third try.

A pleasant enough pub located a few minutes walk from the city centre, and a handy spot for anyone visiting the cathedral. The interior gave the impression of being more geared towards dining than a drinking pub, with most of the tables looking as though they were laid up for food.

Im unable to leave a detailed review as they apparently close at 2:30pm on a Saturday, which seems odd in a major tourist destination. I suppose that just backs up the assumption that they are more food orientated. The barman was friendly enough though, and sensing my disappointment at the poor choice of cider on offer (not that they were serving it anyway), suggested the Kings Head as a suitable alternative.

Beers on tap were 6X and Butcombe. The solitary cider was Olde English.

Very busy for Monday night, but it was more of a restaurant than a pub. The bar is tiny and not designed for people to stand or sit neat it. The ales selection was minimal but tasted good showing that they know how to store it properly. The food looked great even though I did not have any myself. Would be interested to pay a return visit to have some of the food, but this was not a great pub experience.

Warm welcome.
Nice cosy atmosphere.
Fantastic food. The best salmon I have ever eaten!!
Fairly expensive, but don't mind paying for quality food.
If you staying at Beryl's b&b, drive here for dinner.

Very compact and nowhere to really stand if just having a pint here, but real ale and friendly service all the same, 7/10
