Definitely a hotel rather than a pub with most of the various rooms set up for dining. Staff polite but not over-welcoming. Two ales from Vale Brewery, Brill Gold and Red Kite, both of which down well on a hot summer evening. However what used to be a nice lawned garden is now a cold block-finish courtyard with hardwood tables and chairs some of which were the high-level variety that seem to me to be totally pointless. This was my first visit for a number of years and unfortunately there is no incentive to make a another. Nothing was bad but nothing particularly good either. yellowfever - 21 Jul 2014 00:46 |
Pumps at the front of the bar now after the makeover. Mainly GK beers with a guest from Vale. Quite a corporate sort of hotel/conference centre -- not surprising given the location near the motorway -- but quite a nice one at that. Attractive staff. charlie_m - 28 Nov 2009 14:15 |
Just had a makeover, probably rather an expensive one by the look of it, and now the feel is more of a hotel set up for corporate entertainment than a vilage pub. Anyway, my wife and I didn't stay long enough to try either the food or the beer: loudspeakers everywhere, with drivelling pop music coming out of them all. If you don't mind that, the menu didn't look bad. cato - 28 Sep 2008 16:56 |
Good real ale is available, though not instantly obvious, as the pumps are at the back of the bar. The beer is of high quality. herring - 17 May 2005 18:58 |
A charming country style pub with a realness about it that transports you somewhere special. It is perfect for the weary traveller as it is so close to London and to Oxford. Situated conveniently 500yds from junction 6 of the M40 and oxford tube stop. You cant miss it it the one with the only inland light house in its yard (an old movie prop). The bar is a friendly affair with the regulars welcoming and civil. The restaurant has some great variations of classics and an innovative bar menu provides with more than enough options for any taste. I have been staying here for the last few months in one of the nine rooms and since the new management (Roger and Murray) and the refurbishment nine months ago it has been onwards and upwards. Always striving to excel themselves and provide good ol' fashioned hospitality. Absolutley brilliant. It is going to be excellent in the warmer weather with its cricket pitch on the way in the field beside the pub. Ges Walker - 1 Mar 2005 19:55 |
