I agree that it's well worth the walk out to Holgate to get to this Ossett pub to the west of the city centre. It has a very traditional interior spread over several rooms and a good range of beers from Ossett and some of their associated breweries. It was also very busy on Saturday evening. Ales were Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, Big Red, Silver King & Excelsior, Shiny Wrench Stout, Tiny Rebel S.N.A.F.U, Bridestones Citra Red & Tetleys Cask. Cider was from Black Rat. Combine this with a visit to the Volunteer nearby. blue_scrumpy - 3 Mar 2016 21:32 |
This extremely large main road pub is owned and managed by the fairly local Osset Brewery and makes an appearance in the 2016 GBG. Pretty busy at 5pm when we arrive on a Wednesday in late November. Multi roomed community lead pub with a 2 sided bar as well as a side hatch onto the main corridor. There were 9 ales & 1 real cider on the hand pumps during my visit with 4 ales from Osset. I opted for a couple of pints of Rat Breweries White Rat @ 4.0% which is a very good ale. Each room still retains the original features and this theme runs through the pub including a stained glass window in the corridor depicting a fox. We stayed for a couple of drinks and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. The Fox is a very nice pub with a lovely untouched interior & to echo what the previous reviewer said it’s well worth the walk out of town. lezford - 15 Dec 2015 16:31 |
Exceptionally friendly pub, not greatly signposted so it melts in somewhat with the terraced house street it nestles in. Not a great range of ales either, but the atmosphere more than makes up for any shortcomings. The interior is a little odd and minimalist, but also has a definite charm to it. Worth the walk out of town for what should be a pleasant experience. ILooklikeme - 18 Jul 2011 19:24 |
Remarkably traditional survivor, about a mile out of the city centre on the A59 and featuring on the York Historic Pub Guide, A Tetley Heritage Inn, it offers Tetley bitter plus two guests (which weren't marked on the handpump on my visit, so don't be afraid to ask). There hasn't been much opening out, with the entrance corridor leading to a stairway and the toilets. Various rooms are accessed from the corridor, with a vault to the front right, a lounge accessed to the left, and two snugs further back on the right- a peculiar and interesting layout. Each room has wood-panelling and green leather seating, enhancing the atmosphere of this excellent pub. A TV in the lounge shows sport, although I'm not sure if Sky is available. It was pretty busy on my Saturday afternoon visit- a good sign. The name of the beer I had unfortunately escapes me, but suffice to say it was godo enough to return for another one. All in all I would recommend the trek out here to sample this fine pub if you get chance- there are many busues, alternatively you could walk and stop at the Crystal Palace on the way. A real unspoilt place. Carlurmston - 20 Dec 2010 15:25 |
Now in the hands of former Golden Lion / Olde Starre / Cross Keys (Dringhouses) proprietors Stu and Lindsey Weston, this is a pub which is on the up. Great beer, food and atmosphere. MountainMan - 26 Feb 2009 13:56 |
