Made a return trip this week. Adnams was accompanied by Everards Blue Boar, an unusual ale flavoured with honey/mead.

Lunched on steak pie, which was knock-out. Solid lean meat served with a medley of 7 different vegetables plus a generous gravy boat.

Good beer, great food and a warm welcome.

Very welcoming landlord.
As well as the standard Adnams they have Adnams Topaz Gold, a great summer ale, which washed down a couple of tasty sandwiches. I did envy those on the next table who has a delicious-looking pie followed by crumble and custard.

Good garden and a car park with plenty of shade (hugely welcome in this roasting summer). What's not to like - great pub.

Thought I better check back and a couple of recent visits confirmed that this rural pub is still on tip-top form. Food from the extensive menu and chalk-board specials really is superb and the beer is very well looked after by the enthusiastic landlord - there are even tasting notes on the handpumps! A large garden provides cool seating in summer and the cosy interior boasts an eclectic mix of memorabilia. Quite simply a must-visit rural gem!

Lovely village free house pub on Essex/Suffolk border. I took a recent visit on way home from work and was very impressed. Three hand pumps on my visit with Adnams Bitter and Fireside with I think Archers Stand and Deliver. Adnams Fireside I have heard is allegedly a beer using up any unsold Yuletide from Christmas. The friendly landlord was chatty and knowledgeable about beer. Many of the former guest ales pump clips are displayed around the bar area. As you enter the front door you think that someone is seated right there but its a jazz man type dummy. In fact many items are around the pub from street signs and yesteryear advertising and film posters. Even in the very clean toilets there were various posters. The pub is well known for offering very good food and most visitors seemed to be coming to eat. You will however be welcomed even if you are visiting for a drink. If in the area this pub is well worth seeking out.

All the signs were here for this pub - an entry in the Good Beer Guide and a couple of favourable reviews posted on local web sites. It certainly didn't disappoint - a warm welcome, pleasant surroundings, superb beer and excellent food all made for an extremely enjoyable lunchtime visit. If you're out-and-about in rural Suffolk, near the Essex border, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better place for refuelling.
