More a restaurant with a bar these days. Though not unwelcoming to drinkers, it's not the place to go for a few jars. Usual range af Wadworth Ales. Tried the Boundary which was good. The menu, while not large, was good and honest fare. Myself and another had Ciabattas, which came with chips, nice and crispy without being overdone, and the other had the haddock with chips, which looked good and went down very well. Would certainly go back for the food, but not if I just wanted a drink. Jules_B - 28 Dec 2012 15:50 |
I was here last night with my family for an evening meal. Our experience was far better than that reported two months ago by the previous reviewer, and the following observations were particularly notable: AMBIENCE A very relaxing selection of jazz and soft vocal music was on in the background at "just the right" volume to allow hearty conversation yet be heard and appreciated by the discerning ear. Lighting was at a comfortably subdued level. Although the air became a little stuffy, windows were opened on request without delay. STAFF AND SERVICE Friendly, cheerful staff served us, efficiently and quickly but without undue haste. BEERS AND CIDERS, ETC Real ales on were Wadworth 6X and Horizon. I enjoyed a pint of the latter which was on fine form, quite rounded and balanced in flavour, certainly not bland in any way. Magners' cider, along with a quality organic bottled variety, was enjoyed by other family members; I tried a little of both and would recommend the organic. A fairly good wine and spirit selection was also noted. FOOD Cooking smells were inviting as we entered the dining area. I enjoyed the mackerel starter which came in a good-sized portion; remaining on the fish theme I chose salmon for a main which arrived with saute potatoes, samphire and a small amount of bouillabase sauce. My sister-in-law pointed out the advertised mushroom component was missing, and we were again quickly dealt with when I raised it with our waitress. The fish and chips were delicious and although (as described 2 months ago) consist of two slim fillets atop a mound of chips with a salad garnish, were in reality very tasty indeed. Other dishes enjoyed were a good plate of liver-and-bacon, and a "Le Creuset" pot of mixed meats. We too noticed the 18 steaks, etc, but chose alternatives! Desserts were very good too. SUMMARY I would recommend this establishment to anyone staying locally and looking for somewhere to eat and drink at reasonable price, in relaxing surroundings. lad_newton - 19 Jul 2008 11:04 |
It had a been a long time since I had last visited the Northey Arms at Box, so on a recent venture out into the summer evening to find some food I suggested it. I was met by the smart, but informal place that I remembered, and initially thought I had made a good suggestion. The bar had a good selection of beers and largers. The service, although slow to get our order in was friendly and efficent, and I would say slightly above average. However the kitchen staff were on the whole unable to back this up. The starter of mussels which my table shared was ok, nothing to write home about, but certainly not a cause for complaint. The main courses on the other hand were a very rapid downhill slope. Firstly after charging near 18 for a sirloin steak, a price almost becoming the norm, I still feel it is unfair to ask for a further 2 for the addition of a sauce. Especially when on arrival there is only the most thin offering of this expensive sauce to to be seen. That said the steak option did turn out to be the best of our tables 3 main courses. With the steak cooked exactly as asked for. The biggest disapointment of the meal for me was my cod and chips. The chips passed, fine. The peas, old and dry. The fish, my two little thin slithers of fish were borderline inedible. The fish totally void of any taste at all, an opinion shared by the rest of my party and batter which tasted of cooking oil. I have had a lot of battered fish in my time, and yes ofcourse batter always tastes a bit fatty, essentailly that is what it is. However this tasted and felt like eating crispy solidified cooking oil. A mouthful of which ended up on the plate when I offered a sample to my friend. I didn't try the other main course of pork belly, which looked fine, however the owner of it wasn't impressed by that either, seeming like the pork had been cooked too quickly and was therefor a little dry. Overall not a place to be recommended. Seems like there is some potential there and I am sure they are able to knock out some good meals from time to time however at the very least it is currently lacking in consistency. harch - 16 May 2008 02:12 |
Poor beer, dodgy food and no atmosphere. Has been nicely ruined. hrse12 - 31 Jul 2006 23:49 |
Formerly The Northey Arms until recently refurbished. Large road pub 4 miles from Bath. Heavily biased towards food, which is good quality, interesting, and priced at restaurant levels. No longer a particularly good pub to go to just for a couple of beers as the 'drinkers area' has been filled with dining tables. theory900 - 23 Nov 2004 15:22 |
