We called here on spec during a short break in Hereford. If I had checked it out on BITE beforehand , we would have probably driven past, but the number of cars in an out of town pub car park is always a good measure of what is on offer, and as the car park was pretty full we decided to check it out. It had three real ales on offer; Landlord, Doom Bar and a Wye Valley brew that had just run out, but which the landlord was in the process of changing to Ludlow Gold. I can drink TT and Sharps brews at home, so I decided to wait for the Ludlow to come on stream. OK, I had to wait for a few minutes, but it was a superb pint, brought to our table by the landlord himself. We didnt eat here, but the food being served to adjacent tables looked pretty good. Add to that the half a dozen or so staff who were all friendly and efficient, a comfortable ambiance and clean toilets etc., so I was gob-smacked to see when I checked it out on BITE that the Bay Horses current rating is only 4.4. IMHO it deserves to be at least 8/10 overall. I am marking it higher to try to redress the balance a little. steve2905 - 24 Apr 2011 01:57 |
What has happend to a good pub? I returned recently to this once good pub and found that it is not what it used to be. The pub was cold and nearly empty (not suprisingly) the new log fire was out with no sign of it being lit as there were no logs near it. The young man on the bar wasn't very friendly or helpful and it seemed an inconvenience to stop talking to the waitress to serve me. We wanted to eat but found the menu had changed an awful lot with a lot of the popular meals being taken off. The food when delivered was OK but probably not now worth the drive out of town to eat here. It's a great shame that this has happened as it used to be very good. danielmorris - 16 Mar 2009 14:44 |
I visit this pub / restaurant quite regularly, and find the food most agreeable. Since the accommodation was added, the restaurant extended and the bar re-furbished the ambience is greatly enhanced and the changes have improved the whole style of the place. I particularly like the varied menu that is always well cooked and prepared. The daily specials enhance the variety and are always worth trying. danielmorris - 17 Mar 2008 19:29 |
As we were in Hereford, we followed the reviews for this pub and had dinner there. Have to agree about the service very friendly and attentive without going over the top (which is often the case). As for the food. Well it was OK, but considering the over the top reviews it's had I was a little disappointed and the other half thought it quite poor. Better than your average chain but hardly pushing towards the limits. To be fair, if I hadnt read the other reviews I might have been satisfied enough, but we expected more and these days we should get it. inkberrow - 20 Feb 2007 11:43 |
Excellent Bar & Restaurant. The range of beers, largers, real ales and wines is very good. The food was outstanding, and the choice was excellent. Staff were all freindly and very welcoming. SteveE - 4 Aug 2006 17:47 |
