Took my student son out to Sunday lunch here as he used to work for the present owners when they ran our local near Ledbury. We knew we wouldn't be disappointed and we weren't. Clearly the word has gone round that Bren and Shell know how to run a pub as every table was full. Really good quality roast beef, excellent beer and wine, superb fruit crumble. We will definitely be going back when visiting Bath again. ancientgrouse - 4 Nov 2006 21:33 |
[Editor: I could not find this pub on your site after much searching, and I did my best to come up with the correct Fox & Hounds -- as there are loads in England -- but I think this is the right one, just outside Bath.] Upon returning to Bath after a seven-year absence, I told my hosts that I very much wanted to try this new Sunday roast-in-a-pub tradition that I read had become so popular in England. I was not disappointed! An expert I am not by any stretch of the imagination, but as my hosts are locals, and as we were very fortunate enough to enjoy their hospitality, I knew they would give a good recommendation. Although the decor may not seem like anything out of the ordinary to some, I thought it was a beautiful country pub (20 minutes outside Bath city centre)--warm and inviting. Clean, spacious, airy. The staff were friendly and seemed genuinely eager to help and whether our party (eight of us, plus an infant) were enjoying ourselves. Believe me, we were. The food was top. Starters were 2 and were the only drawback to the experience, as no one seemed to like the pate or the prawns. I had the roast beef/Yorkshire pudding at 6 quid with two or three bowls of steamed veg to share amongst us. Roast beef was cooked to perfection, Yorkshire pudding was crispy and tasty, and the veg was just right. Fresh horseradish was ambrosia. Not cheap (but in all fairness, not expensive), but well worth it! Dessert was ordered and eagerly consumed by all. The "banffi" cake with ice cream was a treat. Maybe my memories are colored by the wonderful time shown to us by our hosts, but this was a top pub and well worth the time to visit if you are ever anywhere near Bath! Andy - 21 Jan 2004 17:19 |
