Very disapointing considering the many reviews we had read. Firstly, having secured a table in the restaurant we had to pay for our drinks at the bar in advance and were not trusted to add them to the bill. Despite boasts of seasonal produce and a specials board neither were in evidence. The menu for the month was presented on a laminated sheet of paper, the only hint of variation being the 'pie of the day'. Three attempts eventually identified the main ingredient of said pie as beef. The remainder of the 'imaginative menu' (their words, not mine) was straight from the early eighties. Lost for inspiration I ordered the pie and was duly presented with the ultimate cullinary sin, a frozen puff pastry slice on top of a stew. The pastry had shared no relationship with the contents of the 'pie' during the cooking process and was not even cooked through properly. We didn't stop for puds. Shame, this used to be a pub of legend to which people would gleefully travel from afar and happily queue to be fed. Gaspode - 25 Sep 2011 18:07 |
What a sensational place! We were touring in the county and happened across this real gem of a place. Fantastic food well priced, amazing staff and wonderful atmosphere. If the people who run this place could bottle their ability, the would be able to see the magic formula to many, many other pubs that I know.... ledgewood - 13 Apr 2011 14:21 |
One of the best carveries that I have come across four excellent joints of different meats plus an enormous selection of well cooked vegetables. We had booked a table on Sunday for 8, but unfortunately due to 3 staff being off sick there was quite a delay in getting seated. Not really the pubs fault, and it was impressive that the staff retained their cheerfulness even though they were running around like.... The Badger was as reliable as ever. The wife and I popped in at lunch time today (Sunday) was welcomed at the door, we had not booked a table but nevertheless we were shown to a table with no fuss whatsoever. The waitressess were attentive the carvery excellent and the wine reasonably priced. It is worth the drive to this isolated part of Dorset. Daddsie - 23 Jan 2011 18:01 |
It is extremely hard for me to find fault with this truly excellent pub. I recently had cause to stay in the area for work and was delighted when I first walked in. The staff were incredibly friendly, the accommodation was comfortable and extremely well maintained and the ambience in the evenings was perfect. The only complaint about the food was that there was too much of it! And the bar area is a lively mixture of happy locals and other residents. It is a real hidden gem. I wish I had a pub like this near where I live. I will definitely be paying a return visit for a more leisurely break in the near future. anonymous - 17 Dec 2010 14:07 |
