Hi hammerfall.
Sorry that I haven't replied before now, but my ISP went down for a couple of days.

I remember Jim, and those were indeed good times. I'm sure that you remember The 'League of Gentlemen', who were prominent in the pub at that time.

Do you recall 'blind Dave', who used to DJ at weekends? I can only imagine that we probably stood at the same bar at some time in the past--we may have even met.

I was sorry to hear about the Cranbrook--as you say, it's a sad reflection of the times.

Hi Dinosaurman,

Nice to hear from someone who remembers the old place.

I do vaguely remember Flo and Stan (and certainly the boxer!), although as I was in my teens at the time it was sensible to keep a low profile for obvious reasons.

During my time there, Jim was the main landlord (my better half Rose worked in the pub between 1986-1991 as under manager at the same time)and he presided over some of its best times. I too remember the Police drinking in there, especially their Xmas parties, as well as British Telecom and the Gas Board workers from across the road.

As I recall, Chris was the second landlord to succeed Jim and I believe there were 3 after, not including relief staff.

Since the closure, we've been using the Cranbrook down by Valentine's Park, but that too has now been closed, subject to sale by the brewery - a sad refelction of the times I fear.

Hi Hammerfall.
My brother-in-law's parents ran the Rose and Crown up until the end of 1976. Did you go in there at that time? They were called Flo and Stan, and had a big boxer dog called rastus, that drooled at anyone with food. my sister had her wedding reception upstairs in 1975, and although I was too young to drink at that time, I loved going in there. In the hot summer of 1976, we would have a lock-in on a Saturday night, and two policemen would come in and drink with us (even though they were on duty) and tell us hilarious stories about what they got up to.

As you can imagine, I have some wonderful memories of the Rose and Crown, and I did in fact still drink in there on and off until it finally closed. The last landlord that I knew was called Chris. Did you know him at all?

So another part of my past disappears into the sunset. Oh well.....

This was my local for 25 years or so, until it started the inevitable decline of a string of new landlords unable to deliver unachievable targets etc.

It's been vacant now for a few years, with several aborted new owners along the way. As a result of the latest plans, it has been completely gutted removing all traces of the old pub interior and leaving the building as a hollow shell. If anyone is brave enough to take it on as a pub again it's going to need a complete refurbishment. Mind you, we really could do with another decent pub in Ilford at the moment.....

This pub looks like it could be a nice one - if only it was open! Ilford is really growing at the moment, the block of flats behind it could really bring in a lot of custom.

Personally if I had a few k behind me I'd be looking to open it up. Would have a lot more character than most of the chain pubs around the area! Anyone know anything about it's future?
