| Good pub. Nice food for good prices. Very welcoming and friendly. Wide selection of beers largers wines and spirits. Sunday roast are a treat. Very good quiz on a Monday night. | I have changed my opinion about this pub. It is under new management. The fellow who I presume is the landlord seems really friendly and is a nice bloke. But we went there for the quiz and its been taken over by a new fellow. I have never taken part in such a drab and boring quiz in all my life. The questions are just so boring, oh yes and on the 2 occasions that we attended the quiz 4 of the answers were wrong, I mean saying that the band "Pulp" were formed in 1993......er how about 1978! anyway I wont be going back to this pub again as its fairly dull and the beer isnt that great, the harveys was flavourless and warm. Its not worth the journey from Steyning. I wonder what happened to the old guy who did the quiz before he was a really nice bloke. concho - 2 Mar 2011 19:38 |
| Firstly, maybe this pub would have more reviews if the name of it at the top had been spelt correctly. Anyway that aside I decided to take a trip to the Marlipins on Monday night for there weekly quiz. Its a lovely pub inside very cosy and welcoming , bar staff friendly and beer is good here (havent tried the food but I am sure its great) The quiz was a bit of fun and the quiz master was a friendly bloke who made you feel very welcome and he was cheery and funny at times. The locals are a tiny bit frosty (especially the people sitting next to us) they did not seem to like new comers at the quiz 1 woman who was had obviously had to much to drink was half rude. But I wont let this put me off the Malipins I shall be back but I will avoid sitting near these people. concho - 22 Jul 2010 12:20 |
| I am conscious of using the expression "down-to-earth" a little too frequently in my BITE pub reviews, but so often it seems to fit the bill. And I don't (always) mean it in a euphemistic sense to try and be polite about clientele who err on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum! At the Marlipins for example, one finds a genuine, pretense-free, solid pubby atmosphere. It isn't purporting to win any awards for beer, food, decor, entertainment. It just ticks all the basic boxes that a mixed and middle-of-the-road set of locals want. 4 cask ales (though nothing out of the ordinary those sampled were kept well). A range of the standard lagers and keg cider. Comfortable seating. Traditional, sea-farer-orientated decor that fits both the building and the town's context. Seating outdoors. Not sure about grub but I imagine hearty and simple offerings if there are any. Just a friendly and straight-down-the-line local really, and none the worse for that. Of course this is all based on one visit so far - so if anyone finds different I suppose I'd better draw attention to this as my disclaimer.
