We had Sunday lunch at the Sun and quite enjoyed it. The foor portions are large. The pub itself has one large lounge for dining and a smaller bar at the end, where you can also eat, as we did. There is a TV and a darts board. The garden at the side would have been nice to sit in, had the temperature been a little warmer. Itchen Valley Charlie's Bitter was the sole real ale. Stowford Press was the cider. A reasonable pub. blue_scrumpy - 5 Jun 2012 20:05 |
SORRY SORRY SORRY!!!!!! The previous message was for the Sun at HULVERSTONE! It does NOT apply to the Sun at Calborne. Sorry about that! coolbadger - 12 Jul 2009 08:02 |
Superb! Visited the Sun for a pint prior to taking friends for a meal. What a delight! Four different Real Ales listed PLUS a list of those which will be next served. Very welcoming staff. The beer was very well kept at a perfect temperature. Very nicely laid out pub, garden well kept. But saving the best until last, the food was utterly superb.Between the four of us we all had different starters and main courses. All of us were delighted. Prices were comparable with other local pubs but the food was restaurant standard. Serving staff were quick, efficient and charming. The new owners have done their homework and worked hard. Buses to Freshwater and Newport run every hour, punctually. We had a really great evening. Forget the comments prior to 2009, this is a different place. THANK YOU! We had a great time. coolbadger - 12 Jul 2009 07:40 |
Well talk about the twilight zone. We went here with the intention of having a meal. Walked into the main bar which was tucked into a corner to allow space for more dining tables. I looked into a side bar and was glared at by two red-faced locals (just after midday on a Sunday!). I ordered two drinks (Isle of Wight Ale - well kept) and we went outside. The garden was tidy but the planting was straight from the 60's. No effort had been made at all. The dining facilities looked like something out of a post-war Butlins holiday brochure. Table after table of pensioners eating meat and two veg with lashings of gravy. The barmaid was stroppy in the extreme. Having said all of that the beer was good. If you have been walking cross country for several days and been living off bugs and wild berries then I recommend the Sun completely. Otherwise remember to take your sandwiches. 4 out of 10 for the beer. anonymous - 1 Aug 2008 10:57 |
Oh Dear. Stumbled on this pub on holiday and looking back it's no surprise it was so quiet. A dreadful pub with very mediocre food, badly in need of some decoration. Maybe it suffers from being in the middle of nowhere. But it deserves to be. robbyc0 - 22 Oct 2007 12:07 |
