Less of the jibes about the civil servants!

Used to be a cracking pub when Nigel was there. Now understaffed with terrible beer and atmosphere. Try the Red Bull or Jack Horner instead.

This place has potential, need to sort out the civil servants though.

Great for Friday and Saturday nights! Sundays are nice and quiet if you want a quiet drink and wind down after a hectic weekend! The staff are great!

Having been going to this pub for 4 years i have to say that i find The Nelson Tavern invigorating. With a friendly atmosphere and contrary to speculation of the pub being a student pub as this may be the case for some of the time, you tend to find that the age range in the pub to extend from late teens to 70+. The staff i have found, are very friendly and always willing to meet the needs of punters. Nigel Pitman the liscence holder is one of the most friendly and comunicative landlord i have ever come across from a pub landlords, he is friendly and intergrates with all customers, whether they are regulors or passers by! Friday nights and saturday nights are two of the busiest nights of the week and the atmosphere is electric, both these nights you find no students! The food is exceptional, although service is less than up to standards, this is through no fault of the kitchen staff as there is currently a problem with staffing the kitchen! prices are, yes a little over priced, but this is down to the prices set by the brewery, this however has no effect on the ammount of people who are drawn to the pub on a regular basis, and this is because of the friendly atmosphere within the pub and the exceptional standards of the staff, especially on friday, satuday, sunday and monday nights! The Nelson Tavern is definately worth a look, bad reputation or not, this reputation is not true!

food served 12noon-2.30 monday-friday
dj on the first weekend of every month (sat)
late liscence on weekends

Its well worth a try!

Brimming with students from the near-by college, this over-rated and over-priced pub is not suited to the palates of the wise and the experienced.

I found that the service was acceptable, however my expectation for a decent pint was rudely deflated as I took a sip from a pint most foul. The clientele were loud but friendly and the atmosphere was that of a typical student pub.

With all that now in mind the question is: Is there really any point visiting this pub?
