Has gone back to being the castle. OK pint (no real ales which at this end of Durham is shite) but not a place I would go back to in a hurry

Not bad for a theme Irish bar. Decent seating and flooring, usual suspects on the bar, no real ale of course. The toilets are in the entrance corridor. You can nip in if caught short without even having to buy a half of fizz. Decent enough music plus a quiz machine and a pool table. Been in worse.

Same pub, same beers, good, same friendly staff, but they have changed the name to "SHAMROX".
WHY?
|
For once, the change to an Irish theme bar from a traditional English bar was a vast improvement. Lets just say, the old Castle had somewhat of a reputation. For the past 11 years, ONeills has providing a bouncing, but good natured atmosphere and top quality live music. No real ales, but good pub food the sausages and colcannon are highly recommended.

Love Irish Bars and o neills in Durham is the best! Have all the tradition of Ireland, Irish songs, Some Irish staff, Irish meals, and Irish beers and of course Guiness. The staff are very friendly and pleasent and always take the time to get to know u and make conversation. The meals were lovely and the service was great. They have karaoke, live bands, quizzes and is very central to the town centre on old elvet street. The toilets were lovely and clean and no man smells could be smelt from the toilets any time i have been in. Also has hotel rooms - however have neva stayed as i live locally.

Good guinness and friendly, with a whiff on the nostrils of Eau de Gents as you enter and leave the building.

Absolutely love O'Neills in Durham....which has picked up a distinctly Irish feel since the arrival of the new Irish manageress (think she's the first one in a good few years!) The barstaff are always very welcoming and manage to cheer you up after a long day at the office. Cheap and chirpy, this bar is always good for a great night out with a group of mates.....particularly love the Saturday band nights and i'm eagerly awaiting the much hailed jazz night!!

My partner & I have never been in on a quiz night but have been plenty of late afternoons to evenings where we spent a pleasant time chatting over some drinks in what we both think is quite a comfortable & cosy pub. Also the bar staff have brought drinks to our table instead of us having to go to the bar, on these occasions it has been quiet. However, my cousin & I once ventured in on St Patrick's day a few years ago when it was packed and never had any bother, ever since, whenever I make a trip to Durham I also have to make a trip to O'Neills.

Not a bad pub, but not a good one either. Have been in on quiz night twice and the quizmaster is an arrogant scottish pillock who doesn't even know the answers to his own questions half the time (West Germany winning the first world cup?!). Guinness was nice though and the pub itself was quite pleasant. Bit of a shocker that about getting thrown out though!

I have never visited this place since the following happened.
I walk into the bar up to the beer wench and ask for a guinness. She looks alittle flustered (it may have been her first night)to try to put her at ease I let her know that I am in no hurry at which point the (I'm guessing here) bar manager said "Don't f@@@@@g talk to my staff like that" and I was hurled out.
I can only give this pub a rating of 0/10 because I never got my pint and it is the only pub I have ever been thrown out of. talk about getting the wrong end of the stick.
All that said I am sure the guinness would have been nice and that others find oneills a decent watering hole.
