A decent place just off the beaten track.
Good value drinks and pub grub.
Decent seating areas inside and out.
I would visit again for sure.

10/10

A large pub in a somewhat unusual location.
Still what a fantastic place!

Reasonable prices for drinks, the pint of bulmers over ice i had was out of this world. Did'nt eat but the food looked excellent value for money.
A large beer garden with loads of benches and plenty of variety of seats inside would give this place 10 out of 10.

We had my Sons Wedding reception at The Ship Paignton and the food was fabulous..the staff couldn't do enough for us and everyone was so helpfull and polite and the atmosphere was GREAT...loved this pub and returning in September for my husbands 65th Birthday as I know you can always rely on the food and service all with a reasonable price and so nice to be able to book the upstairs room without charge and the staff just keep coming to the table to make sure all is well....well done The Ship and all that sails in her.

we went to the ship inn preston manor road ,yesterday night for a nice meal, and we thought we were going to enjoy our night, but it ended in disaster and i dont think we will come to this pub again. one of the staff was moody, we ordered our meals and my bf wanted a gammon steak with pineapple 16ounce, and our meals came and my bf got the wrong meal he got a rump steak, so he ate it anyway, then we ordered our desserts and that was a joke it took about a hour for the desserts to come to our table. we was going to get a refund but we sat paitently and asked one of the staff and in the end it turned out that we didnt have a ticket but in the end we got our desserts. very dissapointed :( but give it rating 5 for how its been nicely refurbished. we like the new look and layout.

The "Sizzling Steak House" sign emblazoned on the front would fill most pub goers with dread. However, it's actually not as bad as you'd think. It avoids the ghastly excesses of the "identikit" Steak Houses that most of us have had the misfortune to visit at some stage in our lives. It probably works because it was never built as a pub and so has never had to suffer the ignominy of having its guts ripped out and features removed by big brewery vandals.

It started life as the Grosvenor Hotel and was run in the 50's and 60's by a Scotsman called McGregor. This was a residential hotel and never sold liquor to the public. Bass Charrington acquired it in the 70's turning it into a pub restaurant and it was rechristened the Ship Inn.

Unbelievably, this was a regular entry in the Good Beer Guide until the early 90's. It would be hard pressed to achieve such an accolade nowadays. The beer range and quality is uninspiring. Having said that, there are (unfortunately) many worse places to while away your time in Paignton (or Preston to be entirely accurate). I wonder what the late Mr McGregor would make of it all?

A great night out for us after booking a table initially for 4, however this was gratefully upgraded to 6 after further relatives turned up, we all had a great meal & the management/bar attendants were no less than superb,
thanks again gang, highly recommended, we shall definitely return.

As far as chain pubs go, this one was OK. Food is served all day
On a wet Sunday afternoon, it was very busy, but staff were very attentive and food was served within 10 minutes of ordering. I had 16oz rump steak, which was not so good (like shoe leather) but rest of family had sunday lunch and that was OK - certainly for the price (4.99) Its own car park was a bonus too.
