have always rated this in the past , perhaps because i like strong ale, however i have to say on this occasion my jaipur from Thornbridge was poor .

A long and narrow Wetherspoon�s pub with a small decked courtyard garden off to one side. It�s on two levels with the main bar and dining area being on the higher level at the back, and a smaller couple of side bars off to the sides at the front. It seems a popular spot and was very busy even quite early on a Saturday evening with several big groups of people eating.
The loos reminded me a bit of a motorway services area with their floor to ceiling tiling and slightly garish colour scheme, especially the turquoise around the basins. Service seemed a little slow, with just one person serving (a cappuccino!) and about eight punters waiting. To be fair one or two others then turned up, but then the situation just repeats itself. They�d disappear, and a large backlog would build up before they again reappeared.
Good selection of beers as you would expect from a Wetherspoon�s, with Directors, Abbot Ale, Ruddle�s County, Norman�s Conquest, Stormstay Premium Ale, Butcombe Gold, Thornbridge Kipling and Exmoor Fox. Ciders were Blackthorn, Strongbow and Old Rascal, plus some very dubious stuff left over from a festival that had lots of bits floating in it. My friend seemed to enjoy it though, although he sensibly left the last few millimetres in the bottom of the glass.

Just when I thought the place was achieving consistency.... . popped in on a Friday beer festival night and saw 4 ales on (if you don't include the Abbot, Ruddles production line GKing stuff). The first tried - Spring Chicken - was served cloudy and was exchanged although this didn't deter the staff from carrying on serving it. The Goose Island Honkers Ale was flat and lifeless although there was evidence in the taste that it was a really good beer when in decent nick. Settled for Hydes Over a Barrel which didn't cut it either and definitely not as fresh as it could/should have been. Makes you wonder about Wspoon's corporate beer festivals really and the lack of local ales, how about supporting the local craft brewers and showcasing their wares? Really poor effort and a good example of how not to serve real ale.

didn't have any food , so couldn't possibly comment, don't really like the interior of the pub , but that said really scores well with its beer which is the most important thing sod from banks and taylor ringwood fortyniner , celt bronze , norman conquest to come . Also liked the fact that the staff of different ages and some even appeared to be local . good pub .

Used to be a local of wine. Always good for a drink as, as usual with Spoons, they have a good selection of drinks available all at low prices. Great seating area out back off main road during the summer (decking, tables and chairs), also have heaters for when it gets cooler. Inside it's split in half almost, one for dining the other for drinking, but you can sit where ever you wish. Food is hit and miss; I've eaten a few times and sometimes it's quick and tasty, others overcooked and delayed; all depends on the standards you set for a Spoons pub. Service always good (not exceptional), fairly clean and tidy (toilets always nice and fresh)...a welcoming and large place you don't feel shut out by locals.

If i'm honest - the barstaff could crack a smile, its quite slow service too, (not all of them mind, a few are a right good laff!)
Yes, we've spent many a drunken night in here for a 'late un' and caused some havoc.. not fighting or anything.. more playing about with the condiments, a game of fottie in the garden and a waterfight with the fire extingusher.. yes, i know, before you comment on how stupid we are, i admit it was very irresponsible but when ur drunk by golly its fun!
Much respect to the manager there who did see the funny side of us and i think secretly enjoyed us going in on a friday/saturday night.. without us you see, it was pretty boring for them!
On a sensible and sober note though.. the food is good, the beer is good, typical wetherspoons with plenty of good offers.

After previous disappointing visit , on today's showing there was a vast improvement in service and the two beers - RCH Steamin' Santa and GWB Golden Ale - were served in tip top. perfect condition. OK, so will never be as aesthetically pleasing as other ale houses in terms of decor and ambience, hey it is a w'spoons after all......we shouldn't expect too much, but there is some evidence of an effort being made, what with all the Xmas decorations, tree etc.
Some of the clientele should be approached with a considerable amount of caution, some of which seem to be more than just 'pissed' and could be into other types of recreational stimulants, BUT, as a local chap, it is still the best pub in the area for a good reliable pint.

Popped in here couple of weeks ago at the start of the JDW autumn beer festival.To be honest it was my first visit back here since my debut wetherspoon bristol jaunt several years back.
Maybe it was cos i came here at the end of the spoons jaunt and had a hazy badger head on, but i don't ever remember it being as good as it is now!
The selection of festival ales was great,the quality and condition of the ales quaffed was even better, the service was quick and friendly, and the pub overall was clean, tidy and welcoming, oh yeah and the beer disposal room was extremely clean although reminded me somewhat of a swimming pool WC.
All in all a very nice JDW in a not so nice area,have returned again since and most prob will be sooner than i thought!! 7/10

Dandillus-your miserable ruddy etc is no longer in attendance.
Ale quality is probably the best in any McSpoons in town at the moment. Guest ales often of high gravity. Recent (strong) ales have been Cottage Normans Conquest,Otter Head,Cotleigh Albatross,Exmoor Beast,GK Abbot Reserve....you get the picture.
Good spot,consistent and worth visiting.

The ale is as good and as interesting as it has ever been in here with yesterday having offerings from Phoenix and Arundel breweries. Served with a grunt by the miserable ruddy barman which is unusual as usually service is pretty good in here and better than in a lot of other Spoons. Never mind, it was an excellent pint and worth looking in on if you're in the area.

OK its a Wetherspoons but its definitely the best pub in the area. Quiet sections, TV sections, good garden and above all NICE staff. The manageress makes sure of that and they have a GREAT selection of ales. Go...

Yes still a good spoons,but as is sometimes the case in this chain it is lifted by the presence of the overall pub manager,in this case the delectable Welshdragon. High quality ale,reasonable service and a friendly welcome. Spotless toilets. Sells plenty Ruddles and Abbot and Directors but doesn't attract too many of the associated stereotypes.
Better than most spoons and worth seeking out 41,43,44,45 buses stop nearby and Lawrence Hill station is 10 mins walk away.

Handy place this, what with the nearby NatWest and Post Office as well as the other nearby shops. The Abbot Ale was good and the food I ordered was perfect. Certainly worth another visit.

In the desert of decent, and indeed unthreatening, watering holes in the St George/Redfield areas, here is somewhere that serves a wide range (I think eight) ales, with some from unusual sources and usually in pretty good condition. Sure, it is a typical Wetherspoons and nothing special in that but good to have somewhere reliable to drink in the area. Cheap W'Spoon prices too.

This Wetherspoons pub has certainly improved so very much in recent months. A fair number of CAMRA members are locals. The bar staff are really good and all the food that I have had has been pleasant. Oh, yes, there has been a great choice of real ale, too. The Welsh Dragon has got a good team of managers and staff at St Georges Hall

Made a flying visit last night that lasted 6 pints. The "Hardy and Hansons"/GK Rocking Rudolph was absolutely excellent. A Wychwood seasonal,(in addition to the usual cooking ales),was on and was also reported to be good. Fairly busy but place was staff were well up to the job. Place was neat and tidy. The fire breather(YUM!) was on fine form,full of ould welsh blarney!!
It was good to see a bloke who regularly haunts the pubs of Bristol drinking people's unattended pints being swiftly ejaculated,and was very pleasing to note the manageress checking had the staff washed their hands after breaks.
This spoons is rising in my estimation,and isn't killing itself trying to be what its not. Yes,well done to all last night.

Visited here by accident due to the pig ignorant bus driver zooming past my stop,quite surprised,an improvement on my previous visits,better for smoking ban.
Beer range was average,a Cotleigh seasonal(New Harvest) was the most exciting exhibit. Appears the range will improve in the near future when beer lines are replaced(2 handpulls are permanently on rough cider and are tainted as a result)
Pleasing to see that the wonderful Welsh manageress who was in the Commercial Rooms for a while a few months ago is in situ here,she can blow her Welsh dragon flames on me any time!!!!(YUM!!!!) I'LL BE BACK.............

As good as any other Wetherspoons for both food and beer. Generous portions of food, compared with, say, The Knights Templar near Temple Meads.
A safe choice, but nothing fantastic.

Umm, where do I start?? Beer: good selection but poorly kept. Food: its a Wetherspoons so you know it's bad. Clientele: it's a back end of Bristol pub, so there mainlly inbreds. Did see a great fight started by the barman once mind. Overall, it's still the best pub on Church Road, thank god I moved!!!
