This is a must for food. Excellent variety on the menu and daily specials that will whet your appetite. Service is good, not always fast due to the meals being cooked to order, but well worth the wait during busy season. The pub on a whole is quiet so ideal for relaxation and a family meal

...called in when in Sidmouth last week. Pleasant pub with friendly staff, although no great character. Would visit again...

As a restaurant probably very good - as a pub rather bland - like a previous commentator I just couldn't warm to it - four real ales all much of a muchness - with four pumps I would have expected more variety i.e. a session, a dark, a strong and a light and hoppy. All were in good enough condition though.

Neat pub with very good food and imaginative guest beer on tap. Friendly and quite cosy, all in all a very decent pub.

Stopped in Sidmouth on the way home from Dorset last week and thought we'd find a pub for a quick pint and a bite. Walked along the seafront and then up intowards town and found The Anchor. Looked good, tables outside, sun shining, this'll do we thought. Very friendly greeting from from Barlady inside. Ordered drinks. Soft drink for Mrs Gaffer and a choice of Courage Best, (the obligatory) Doom Bar or guest ale which was Flying Scotsmans. I opted for the latter even tho it seemed a bit bizarre drinking scottish ale in Devon. Very nice brew. Fresh Crab Sandwiches for lunch on thick cut malted bread with homemade coleslaw. Divine. All in All a very pleasant pit stop for an hour to sit outside and watch the world go by. Recommended

Not really my kind of place even though there was nothing really wrong with it. It is in a good central location just not as traditional as i had hoped for. 6/10

A terraced pub, i seem to have noted that it was now grey rendered with black paintwork and a front beer patio.
The interior is open plan, L shaped around the bar. Its become a moderny kind of food/beer place. Walls were white or pinkish, with wood panel. High backed leather chairs and perimeter seating, with part wood and part carpet flooring. There was a TV with Beeb on, nice fireplace and background music to a decent level. Service was functional and clientele mixed.
Beer; tap stuff, with Courage Directors and Best, Everard's Sunchaser and the majestic Doombar on Handpull. I had the Directors for a change, but it was too cold.
Didnt warm to the place and i wish i could warm the beer.

I have just recently returned form a small break in Devon. I visited Sidmouth on a pre tour as I have heard of the sidmouth folk festival and I wanted to get the low down on the local pubs before my preposed visit to the festival this year (never been before). I read all the reviews on the pubs prior to my visit and I would like to add my humble opinion.
As pubs go it was not bad. I can not put my finger on why I fould this pub bland. Food was OK, as was the beer tried an Ale and lager. I just felt more comfortable in some other local pubs.

Not a bad pub, but trying to be a gastro pub and has lost some of the cosy charm it once had. Having said that, the ales are OK and the food was good value although the menu could do with a bit of livening up.

Had lunch here today with Shandychica. Great transformation from a scruffy town centre local (on my last visit about ten years ago!) to a pleasent foodie pub. The food was freshly prepared and tasty. Friendly staff and reasonably priced for Sidmouth. One slight concern is that the staff seemed to vanish from behind the bar. They almost lost some business by being absent when people walked in.

Great value food and friendly staff.
