Recently done up and converted to a Wetherspoons hotel.

I would agree that this is a pretty good example of the Wetherspoons chain; the beer was well-kept, the barman friendly and competent and the atmosphere pleasant.

Visited this one a few times on my latest trip to Barrow and I'm not usually a fan of this chain and certainly wouldn't go in my local to home one unless forced but got to say hats off to all the staff as the service was excellent and the beer spot on.

One of the better Wetherspoons establishments. Clean interior, good food and excellent service. Not bad range of ales, always happy to see Directors on tap.

What's happening to the Railway? Where's the decent beer gone? I get the impression that Wetherspoons is going down hill rapidly. Increasingly their beer range is shrinking, went in Saturday, three pumps had no clips on, the two remaining had Ruddles and Directors. Wouldn't wash my feet in either. As for the other bar, the Hawkshead was coming soon (and had been for two weeks) as was the case for the other beers.
If they are selling out of beer on a Friday / Saturday there should be more ready to pull through and put on. It just doesn't look good when the bar looks so depleted.
In my opinion, if you want a decent pint in a proper wet house go to the Kings at Hawcoat. Five real ales, all top notch.

Popped in recently whilst had an hour between connecting trains. Reminds me of mylocal Wethers in Fleetwood. Open early n busy with 'morning boozers'!
Decent selection of beers on, The Phoenix Black Shadow was very good. Seemed to be a full selection of ales on.
Apparently killip_ian alot of micro breweries such as the ones in Cumbria have a problem with Wethers selling their beers.
I would say one of the better Wethers.

i have been going into the railway since it opened and i am becoming disappointed at the range of beers. constantly there is ruddles, green king and directors and frankly i wouldn't walk to the end of my street to drink any of them. there now seems to be an attempt to increase the range of beers but with 25+ breweries in cumbria why aren't there more local beers on tap? there also always seems to be an "available soon" clip on many beers but the range never seems to vary.
added to this, the fact that the pub is looking rather tired and is in desperate need of a refit and the toilets always smell of stale urine, rather puts you off going in. come on wetherspoons, spruce it up a bit. now that there are an increasing number of pubs in barrow doing reasonably priced, well kept real ale, the railway may find it has a bit if competition.
however, when there is good real ale on, it is well kept.

Got to challenge my earlier comments.Has improved since Mike took over.Real ales very well presented.With the credit-crunch reducing choice,will doubtless get back to the numbers of the old days.

Better than average 'Spoons in a lovely old railway building. Manager was clearly very keen on his ales, which were served in good condition.

Not to its original high standards.Seems to be a mentality to drive some of the 'old school' customers away.It would appear that they prefere the chav element instead.Still rather spend the odd hour here,than in some of the local pubs.

Usually like Wetherspoons pubs but this is a poor effort. Quality of service and beer leaves a lot to be desired, and the attitude of the staff can sometimes border on the downright nasty. Very popular but of course it is - it's cheap!

NOT YOUR TYPICAL JD WETHERSPOON BOOZER. THE STAFF ARE FREINDLY AND WILL TALK TO YOU IF THEY HAVE A MINUTE. BY FAR THE MOST POPULAR PUB IN THE TOWN, ATTRACTING A VARIED CLIENTEL. WOULD BE BETTER IF THE MANAGER JILL GOT RID OF SOME THE OLD CODGERS WHO SPEND ALL DAY DRINKING JOHN SMITHS AND MAKING THE PLACE SMELL LIKE AN OLD FOLKS HOME. BY THE WAY, A GOOD SELECTION OF REAL ALES CAN USUALLY BE FOUND. IF IN ANY DOUBT ABOUT WHAT TO TRY YOU CAN USUALLY ASK "COCKNEY BARRY" AT THE END OF THE BAR - HE'S THE EXPERT.
