Probably a drinkers pub. Went in early evening looking for food. I had smoked haddock and pea risotto without any smoked haddock or peas. It was a stodgy lump of rice with some parmesan grated over it. My girlfriend had smoked salmon and prawn (shells on) salad. They were small prawns without shells. Very average and could easily have been concocted from a supermarket's basics line. Beer, Wadworths 6X was excellent as was the cider. I'd come back for a pint but food? Packet of peanuts maybe.

Lunch time on market day before Christmas, and while the Dragon was open the Wellington up the road was not. Rather strange. But never mind this one is sited in the centre of town and was very welcome. A good basic, old fashioned wood all over establishment. Good to see hooks along the bar by the stools for coats. Quiet when I popped in, so quickly served. Tried the Horizon at £3.40 which went down well. Plenty of seating but like a lot of places too many ads on the walls. Only negative really was the music which was not on the background setting. I will go in again when passing.

Really Lovely pub right in the middle of Marlborough The food was fantastic - could barely walk when Id finished ....helpful staff and clean and tidy. Marlborough is alovely town and we came for the weekend and stayed in the pub. Newly decorated rooms (i think) and they were a real wow factor. lovely feel to the place - would recommend to everyone - we will be back! thank you

Tired looking pub with a very officious hippy behind the bar. Live music from what seemed to be a bunch of not very talented local kids one of whom was so young he still wore braces on his teeth. Oh Christ. Ale okay but my glass was dirty. Visited five or so pubs in Marlborough while I was there on business (stayed at the Ivy,a great local hotel) and this was far and away the worst. Worthy of leaving a negative review for the annoying barman, unclean glass, and bad music. Do yourself a favour and head to The Bear or Royal Oak. My verdict on the Green Dragon? STAY AWAY.

'I love the 'smell of money' (as I have none) and this town, where even the Queen laughs at some of the accents, has 'riches' in terms of it's pubs. The 'Green Dragon' has a brick fronted facade with two lower bay windows, with a street level bar and a lower level with pool table and flag stone flooring and a separate seating area called the 'Dungeon'. The large beer garden which wanders past the old outhouses and on through the back of the cottages in Alma Place to a lower level is worth a visit. This is a 'Wadworth's' pub serving their 6x and 'Swordfish' (a unique blend of Wadworth 6X & Pussers Rum) and a Mild guest ale from the 'Pint Size brewery', which is a micro-plant for Wadworths who use the small-scale facilities to develop ales. When I was in it was mainly full with 'ladies who lunch' dining from the Lunch menu served Mon- Sat 12-2, Sun 12-3. Evenings 6-9, not Sunday. Live music. It says something about the town that it has a town crier and beadle (Alf Johnson) who seems to award his 'fit to drink in' certificate to this boozer each year. The toilets are interesting and are billed as a 'recycling unit' with urinals labeled 'larger' and 'real ale' and I choose the later, which was well served by the excellent ales of this fine establishment. Food was very good and good value - a rich, mouthwatering beef pie. Service for food was polite and prompt. Beer disappointing - think I got the end of the barrel and should have asked to change it. Having said that the barman noticed it was cloudy when it was served and did nothing about it. Good atmosphere for a Friday lunchtime.

Excellent find. Specials board gave us an excellent choice of reasonably priced good food (with large fresh salad and warm crusty bread), 6x was on and the higgeldy piggeldy layout suited both locals and visitors. Saw bats in the garden early evening. Charming before the Saturday karaoke started which seemed very popular (looks like there is live music on other weekends).

My recommendation for those staying at the Greene King place over the road but who wish to avoid their beers and food. Superb drop of 6X and good food reasonably priced. Nice untouched town centre local. Long may it continue.

Popped in here for a couple on Saturday, whilst visiting Marlborough for the afternoon. Seemed like a nice, traditional old boozer (but that's enough about me!), nice Guinness and an even nicer barmaid!

Good ales but that is it. Tired, tatty, old, sullen and empty.
|
PS the pub is now cask marqued. Didn't try the food. The staff were friendly and so were the locals who abounded.

Why haven't I posted something about this pub before? A really interesting old pub on the main drag with two front drinking areas and two downstairs rooms as well as a good size beer garden. Carries Wadworth beers and some guests. I had a fine pint of Mild from the Pint Size (old Mayhem) Brewery, which is now owned by Wadworth and operates as a kind of R&D facility.
