user reviews of the Hare & Hounds, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I quite like the H&H. Pricey but good selection of craft and cask.

Calls itself a craft beer pub, but its almost entirely keg versions of 'craft' beer. Echoey, soulless, and a lot of vacuous people shouting at each other and creating a noisey din ... go round the corner to the Mitre Tavern for a real pub and real beer.

Now back open as the Hare and Hounds after a complete – and presumably very expensive – refurbishment. It’s awfully hip and perhaps represents a good example of what the powers that be would like London Road to look like in a few years’ time.

The range is plentiful with various guest ales and craft lagers on tap (which includes a tank of Meantime lager on site), and La Choza offers a small Mexican street food menu, but the prices are exorbitant (I paid £8.80 for an ale and a standard bottle of Sierra Nevada) and the place is absolutely plastered with CCTV cameras, both inside and outside. That, combined with my girlfriend’s bag being searched by doormen early on a Saturday night and 'security' roaming the place, was just a bit too instrusive and meant that we couldn't get out of there quickly enough.

Maybe a fun place to go in a group, but remember to bring plenty of notes with you!

Now called 'The Hydrant' and angling to be a music venue. Was in there last night, they are now part of 'Brighton Live' so obviously the music venue bit is working out. Couldn't quite put my finger on it, but something is missing from this place. Could be the size of the place, or the fact that it was empty.

Good pub now with 3 real ales on and Red Stripe on offer at 2.30 per pint. Wifi working well, free pool and cheap food. Everything a student needs

This place is really busy once again.About time too.Food and sport and good beer all on offer.Lots now happening upstairs so they seem to have a good promoter too.

Oh yes, oh yes. Went to the re-launch last night and this place is actually nice again.
Nice sofas, better lighting and they finally got rid of the green colours.
Well done fellas.

The Hare & Hounds has certainly changed a lot over the past couple of years, so much so that it could easily be mistaken for another place altogether.

This used to be a dark, dingy, miserable, lifeless place, with very few people and very bad staff.

Since the take over, there is colour, life, atmosphere and general craziness all around! There are plenty of happy loyal customers like myself, who return again and again for the more than capable and always friendly bar staff, the fantastic variety of live music, the great food and the general good vibes that are forever flowing from the owners.

This really is no ordianry pub! Apart from the pool tables that are always well kept, you can play giant jenga and giant connect 4!!! You can even have giant straws if you want!!

Make up your own mind...i love it!

Perhaps my review was a bit out of date, but it was based on many visits over the years.
If the H&H has changed for the better - good! Very pleased to hear it. I'll check it out next time I'm in Brighton.

I can't believe the reviews of this pub, they just don't bare any resemblance to my experience. What I have found is good beer (and I like my beer), very friendly and switched on bar staff (allot of pubs don't have this)and in general, very friendly people. I particularly like the live music which is at an exceptional standard every weekend and free!!! The food is good too.

I just like the place. Always have very good nights in here. If you haven't been before, go with an open mind because the other reviews criticising the place just aren't right.

I drink at this pub 3 or 4 times a week. The descriptions given above just simply do not describe this pub as it is now & has been for the last two years.
I can't help but think that they have been written by those trouble makers that were barred.

I find the H&H a very convenient &, more importantly, safe place to eat/drink/socialise with my friends.

Since the landlord/lady took over around three years ago they have faced a struggle to change not only the pub but also the perception of it.

Free bands every Saturday night, free pool on two tables every Tuesday night & open to midnight most nights (01:00 on Saturdays) this pub has come a long way since the procession of chav landlords who did nothing for it & cared even less.

The current owners have poured their own money into this pub & have very definite plans for the future & it shows.

If you're in Brighton give it a look in.

Even Morrissey would have trouble finding the words to describe how deeply horrifying this pub is. The atmosphere is threatening, the beer poor and the bar staffed by Cybermen.
Terryadinfinitum - 16 Apr 2007 12:51
If this pub was a football team - it would be the San Marino reserves.
God - I wish it was a football team, then every other Saturday it would bugger off and have an away game.
Beer tastes like someone else has drunk it just before you.
londinieres - 24 Sep 2006 20:42
If this pub was a football team it would be Sunderland, full of good intentions but unfortunately doomed to languish in the lower reaches of the pub premiership for at least the next ten years.

Really, it needs to be completely done out but it just gets bought by different people who make pointless alterations like either adding or removing one of the pool tables outside (hmm, sitting outside on a main road crossroads with a firestation next door? Now thats what I call relaxing).

Avoid.

Prime site pub, but a hugely wasted opportunity. I've known this pub since 1992 and it's always been bad. As long as they've got a few lads and chavs in, the owners seem to be happy. The beer's usually rubbish too. (Phew, got that off my chest!)
anonymous - 6 Dec 2005 09:51
gone down hill since you got rid of sky tv
anonymous - 8 Sep 2005 16:34
avoid, in desperate need of an overhaul, god knows how many different owners it has had in the last few years, still the same liveless pub, company never great.
jonrodge - 12 Jul 2005 01:03
Typical chain pub with too large a space and no atmosphere. Always busy because it's relatively cheap and filled with lads and students.
Lucy - 20 Oct 2004 13:40
Huge pub on a corner. If it hasn't changed much since I was a student, the staff have an annoying habit of opening the doors at 10:59pm to allow the icy Brighton wind to sweep through
Joe - 30 Jul 2004 16:23
