Hophouse, Cliftonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A busy and popular pub in the heart of Clifton village, this used to be owned by Wadworth's but has recently been refurbished and presumably sold on going on the complete lack of any of their beers on the bar. Although the layout is unchanged, it has a more contemporary feel to the place and is looking somewhat fresher than it was.
The main bar is an open plan affair, with large folding windows at the front that open up in the summer. Paintwork is a pale shade of green, with some painted wood panelling around the lower part of the wall, and the flooring is mostly bare boards with some black tiles around the bar. There was a trendy, modern fire with a glass front sunk in to one wall. Lighting was mostly from several large hanging silver domes above the bar, and there was a plasma in one corner showing the rugby. The commentary was piped throughout the pub and this was somewhat intrusive if you just wanted a quiet pint. There were several dishes of complimentary nuts on the bar and stools all along it for punters to sit.
Upstairs it has quite a different feel to it, being fully carpeted and having a deep maroon paintwork with some large black and white photos. There was a corniced plaster ceiling, and some rather old fashioned lamp shades. There were many stools around the perimeter, and elsewhere there were partitioned bench seats as well as tables and chairs. Staff all seemed friendly and helpful.
There was an unusual choice of beers on tap with Mystery Tor and Hedge Monkey from Glastonbury, Yeovils Star Gazer and Moors So Hop. Ciders were Aspalls Suffolk and Orchard Pig.

Pleasant enough place but nothing special, reasonable prices for Clifton and chatty welcoming barmaid

A good mix of modern and traditional pub interior. Light and clean. Drinks quite pricey but this is Clifton, so to be expected. Service is always friendly and efficient, attracting a mixed crowd of students and more mature professionals. Not tried the food, but menu looks quite gastro puby, and I've been assured it's good quality. Worth a look day or night.

a fair sort of pub again quite woodeney inside , large pub, beer quite expensive , bishops tipple 3.05 a pint , and best I could say about it was passable just.

used to have a nice old fashioned atmosphere- now ruined by a lousy pretentious refurb, what in gods name do developers think they are doing destroying old pubs and turning them into souless places for the seriously up their own backside brigade!

Sometimes I wonder if Wadworths ever wander out of Devizes. Maybe they should see what their designer has done with the 1/4million spent on tarting this place up! Nice to see a flash bar doing real ales, but predictably indifferently. Character?

Without wishing to appear like a beer snob, surely the expression "good pint of 4X and Guinness" is something of a contradiction in terms?! For the more discerning quaffer who prefers to eschew flavourless effervescent mass-produced lager and nitrogen-pumped Irish stout, you may wish to concentrate on the selection of well-kept Wadworth ales - rare to find such a good range in the area. Food looked okay too. I confess to not having visited for a while now, but I was encouraged by this place which despite being a recent development managed to embrace both modern and traditional, enabling it to appeal to both local and student, old and young.

Interesting. Good pint of 4X & Guinness. Food something of a dissapointment; jacket potato undercooked and plentifull filling rather spoiled by lemon mayonaise. Marie Rose sauce would be a great deal more palatable. Redeeming feature - barmaid(en)is very pleasant and is more than willing to enter conversation with customers. Also very easy on the eye. Coffee machine is 'busted' without plans to repair / replace. Worth the visit
