Bland GK pb slight emphasis on food but retains drinker's area to the front. Only one ale on - Thwaite's Wainwright, which was insipied and tasteless. left half of it.

Went into this place for a meal with my good lady wife yesterday. The food was superb, well priced and very well presented. The menu was on a par with what I'd expect with a reasonably priced restaurant and I will have no hesitation in going back again (indeed I intend doing so tomorrow). A nice selection of wines and my wife's Barcardi and coke was beautifully presented with ice, lemon and a straw without my having to ask. Well done all round!
9/10 - refuse to give 10 since there's always room for improvement in any establishment but no disrespect is meant by this!

I have a completely different view of The Plough. I regularily attend the steak day, and have had nothing but fantastic service and great value for money food. It is regularily busy, but I am still served by whoever is on the bar in a way that causes no complaints. I have also taken my family for the Sunday Carvery which again is amazing and all fresh cooked. If anyone has a bad experience here I suggest you go and try again, as I think the pub is doing great and has a friendly atmosphere for all.

10 of us booked in on the thursday grill night only to be told there would be no mixed grills that evening!! Said we needed more time as at least 5 of us wanted mixed grills, 20 minutes later we were still waiting to place a order. our table was not ready on arrival and the pub was quite empty. poor service, poor organisation, (we booked 4 days in advance, you would think they would have made the effort to provide mixed grills on a specials grill night!) we cannot comment on the food as we chose to take our custom elsewhere as it struck us they could not deal with a party of 10. all 10 of us will not be making a 2nd visit.

Hi David
Not sure which evening you visited, but I am sorry you didnt enjoy your time here. The music is normally quite low apart from the weekends (Fri-Sat) and you should really come try our food! The chef is amazing.
Hopefully see you soon

Quite a busy pub, service was quick and efficient at the bar. Restaurant didn't seem as though anyone was eating, we weren't out for a meal so can't comment on the grub.
Huge TV on, gaming machine and music blaring out (someone even turned it up whilst we were there)...that's it - time to leave!
If you like a towny, noisy pub it's for you, but for those of us that like to find a seat for a quite drink and a chat...give it a miss.

seems to get worse with every change of management.
|
I went in there with the family yesterday for a Bank Holiday lunch - first time I've been back since a recent change in management.
The former autocratic rules on smoking (as they stood in October 2006) are of course now mandatory and universal so this is no longer an issue (sadly!).
This place is clean, the staff are very pleasant and foodwise it's prepared by a professional ex-naval chef who buys in the ingredients himself from local providers. Our meal was truly excellent and I take back what I said in October2006 - I shall be going back and would encourage others to try it.
9/10 - always room for improvement!

Without a doubt the worst pub in Bicester - give it a wide berth. They have a karaoke night on Thursdays which is very poor, and not a patch on the karaoke in G's on the same night.
I found the staff to be unfriendly as well. What a shame - in the mid 90's this was one of the friendliest and welcoming pubs in Bicester. What a difference a decadce makes.

This pub has now re-opened

Big up The Plough!
Great Hosts, friendly staff and brill food. The plough seems to be turning into a swell place to hang out, thanks to alot of TLC from the new owners (really nice couple). I'm really enjoying the atmosphere in there now, and the development of the entertainment etc means that it will only get better(you MUST come to the poker evenings!!)
Well done to the guys from the Plough for bringing a decent pub to the area!

OK, The Plough is open again and it no longer does the Sunday Roast and doesn't have wireless internet access at the moment, but that's no reason to miss it out on a visit to Bicester.
Food is served 11am 'til 7pm every day, and the "Ploughman's Special" is a good bargain - it may seem that it is 2 more than the regular ploughman's, but you get half a pint of beer thrown in, and it is well worth the extra. - I tried it for the first time on Friday at lunch time and was very impressed!
The Beer seems pretty good (can only vouch for the IPA and Speckled Hen myself), allthough in my opinion its not the cheapest in Bicester. There is a wide selection of Lagers and Ales (3 casks on hand-pull at the moment, although there is space for 4.)
Two Wide screen TVs with Sky Sports, internet Juke Box, Darts Board, Aunt Sally, and a Pool table are provided for your entertainment, and there are regular events such as Karaoke, Live Bands, and a Quiz Night on Wednesdays.
r.e. the Smoking Policy - one end of the Pub, where the pool table & darts board are located, is designated as 'the smoking area' and the staff are very hot on stopping smokers in other areas of the pub. I don't think that this is particularly a problem and, let's face it, come May '07 you won't be able to smoke inside anyway.
It's not the same as the Plough was a few years ago, but it is well worth a visit - you won't be dissapointed, especially if you are hungry and have the Ploughman's Special.
|
Expensive and for it's location too pretentious. Don't like the autocratic rules about smoking. In short I won't be going back.
|
Reopened recently. Not a bad refurb. A bit soulless at the moment. Beer was average and the prices weren't bad. Nice little beer garden if they could sheild the main road from it. Staff were quite friendly. Better than it used to be before it closed.

Used to be my local back in the 90's - what a great place it was then! Since then has died a slow death and is in fact now closed, though I am led to believe the last occupants are now squatting there!
|
good friendly pub though watching football can be a trial thanks to the moronic chanting from a group of(non violent)townies. Did once find an aged sausage under my seat!
|
Friendly bar staff and exceptional Sunday roasts (the biggest and best in Bicester), but a fairly noisy and dark interior and the beer garden is a bit close to the road. Beer's not bad, better than the usual standard range. Can be full of swearing Scotsmen on match days, although they're not particularly threatening. Probably not the pub to take granny to unless she likes that sort of thing.
