Located on a narrow lane off Angel Row on the north-west side of Slab Square. It was quite busy when I called in on Thursday, so inevitably there was a long wait to be served and almost impossible to find an empty table without any dirty plates or glasses on it.
It is a pity that Tim Martin and his team don't seem to be willing or able to cure this problem in many of their outlets because for me, it detracts from the enjoyment of drinking their usually well kept and reasonably priced real ales.
The Kelham Island Pale Rider (5.2% ABV) at £2.29 a pint was top notch, but I would have enjoyed much better if I hadn't been surrounded by dirty glasses and plates of leftover food.

Popped in yesterday early doors. Friendly barmaid served me a well kept Nottingham EPA. Busy doing breakfasts and those dreaded continental coffees. CAMRA discount. Worth a visit.

Decent enough JDW pub. Good choice of ales, staff friendly and mixed bag of customers. Only drawback is that this has probably one of the longest walks to the toilets.
|
Not a bad Wetherspoons with a couple of interesting guest ales on when I visited. Very busy (it's in a little street with many bars/clubs) but didn't wait long to get served. Usual JDW fare and offers.

Called in on Saturday after visiting the Bell. It was packed full of shoppers, buggys and untethered brats. We didn't bother having a drink. Shame it's normally better than this, but then again I've always called in at night before.

I agree with reynard's review of Nov 2008, this is one of the better JDWs. I have probably been in about once every two months this year and it has definitely improved - and yes it needed to.
So, if you have to visit a JDW when in Nottingham, then go there.

called recently on a saturday day out to nottingham. first impression was of a reasonably smart pub, converted from an older building. *** inside was of a fairly modern design, about 3 large rooms and bar area, done out in open plan style. seating for something like 100. there is a smallish upstairs gallery, with a smokers area and toilets. The place seems very popular and well used, but is kept fairly tidy. *** the bar staff were trying hard to keep up with the busy trade, but there was a 45 minute delay on meals. there were 15 cask pumps and I think 13 were in use, all with different ales. This was quite impressive to say there wasn't "festival" on. We tried the Abbot and Lees autumn gold. both were quite acceptable. standard jdw menu. the fish & chips and 5-bean chilli were quite good, but we had a long wait as said earlier. this was around 4pm. *** verdict: Pleasant place, but struggles to cope when it gets busy. Nice choice of beers. Would be happy to call again.

Very friendly staff, a credit to JDW. Good quality ale. Well worth a visit.

The Roebuck is tucked away down St James Street just a short walk away from the Bell. It's a handy pub to go to on a Friday/Saturday as the beer is cheap and the place so massive that you stand a good chance of getting a seat. Not much atmosphere, because of it's size, but a nice enough pub in the Wetherspoons style. The best thing about the place is the beer; they do excellent local beer from the "Nottingham Brewery", if they have 'EPA' then I would recommend several of those!

IMHO this is one of the better 'Spoons that I have been to. I know most of them are all pretty much the same but I did have a nice pint of Nottinghamshire Brewery beer and I unexpectedly saw the roof terrace which'll be a great relief to all you smokers!
In all I enjoyed the visit though as I went mid-afternoon may've been the best time to go as the evenings could quite well be another kettle of fish...

Staff are dreadful beyond belief, when I complained that I had been waiting 20 mins while the staff served theier pals who came in I was told I'd be thrown out. The manager is inept and unable to do what his job title suggests he should be doing. Dont bother, EVER.

love the pub for a quick drink. non smoking is gay but now its the ban have to give up..
ihave waited 45 mins for a drnik. never get served. still for a qucikie not bad

Usual wethers-not as bad as its been portrayed

pig ignorant staff - no surprise there, same as most of the Wetherspoons staff in Nottingham pubs.

Not a great choice of real ale, when I popped in there on Saturday night. Most of the guest ales were off. However, the service was prompt. Incidentally, they have a sign in there saying "Smokers are welcome to use our roof terrace". Hence the retention of a cigarette machine. Much better, now its non-smoking downstairs though Can't really compete with the nearby Olde Trip to Jerusalem and Old Salutation for choice of beer and atmosphere, but still better than the majority of pubs / bars in the town centre. I personally prefer this to the Wetherspoons on the Market square, but neither are as good as the Wetherspoons' Last Post in Beeston.

The no smoking pub , but still has a cigarette machine....strange that bet they give the profits from the machine to charity. This place needs far more staff , we met up here for a drink two weeks before Christmas , you must be prepared for a 20 to 30 min wait to get served , if it was busy it could be a lot longer .

I reckon this place has improved threefold since going totally non-smoking. This seems to have driven out most of the all-day drinking scrotes who used to make the place a bit foreboding in the early evening.

nice pub - and food - need more staff can take a few hours to get served at the bar

This is the better of the two Wetherspoons in the city centre though that's not saying much!
They have most of the usual stuff you might expect at a Wetherspoons; 3 or 4 staff for trying to serve about 20 punters, 6 or 7 beers advertised but only two available, lots of cheap food, extensive number of wines by the glass & bottle, curry nights, it's big and it's miles upstairs to the loos, but......
thankfully the obligatory, workshy, scruffy, all day drinker crowd seem to avoid this place in favour of the Goose on the Square and the other Wetherspoons.
