I was slightly disappointed with this pub. There is a public bar in two sections and a separate restaurant area. The Sunday lunch trade was just wrapping up on our visit. Only one of my first 4 pubs had stocked anything other than Sharps and that was the Wetherspoons. Doom Bar & Sea Fury were the two Sharps beers in this pub. There was no real cider either. Not as good as I'd hoped.

This pub has been tastefully refurbished recently, and is under the management of people previously or still connected with Rick Stein's empire.
The patron, Rupert, is very friendly, good humoured and accommodating.
Part of the pub is a restaurant, but that hasn't altered the fact that the establishment is still very much a pub. The cosy bars with open fires are as one would hope in a Cornish coastal area. The Sharp's range of beers were in good form yesterday.
We didn't have a chance to try the cooking, but the menu read well.
The car park is small, but is unrestricted on the road outside in any case.

Sat at the bar why I waited for the mrs and friends to meet up at the indian over the road. Sat and people watched. I have to say the staff were very welcoming to all punters and the level of politeness was over and above what you would expect. I enjoyed reading the list of banned people behind the bar. There are three sentances - banned for life, banned until 18 (!), banned for a determinable period. Very amusing - must say more about the town.

I would definitely not recommend this pub for food. I ordered ham, eggs and chips on the 3rd September 2010 and although it looked and tasted lovely, it wasn't until I had eaten the top layer of food that I found a dead fly on the bottom of the plate lying on its back. On complaining to the waitress I was asked if I wanted replacement food which I quickly declined and said I wasn't happy. The owner of the pub then came over (who was very drunk) and said that he had gone to Fifteen the other week and he had a fly in his food, he had ordered another meal and got on with it. He was very rude and was basically telling me a fly in your food is OK.
I CERTAINLY DO NOT RECOMMEND PEOPLE TO GO THERE AND I AM REPORTING THIS TO ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH.

Having read the previous review I feel that I must say something in the Ship's defence. I have also been using the pub for several years; unlike the previous reviewer I do so most weekends, not just on 'irregular occasions' and during the folk festival (once a year). I have always found the staff and customers to be very friendly and welcoming to everyone. The food is also excellent both in terms of value for money and quality - nothing fancy just good pub food. As for the previous reviewer's experience, my experience of the folk festival is that certain pubs become so crowded it is impossible to get in. Folk music is also played/sung constantly. This isn't to everyone's taste and I imagine if you work in one of the pubs concerned it can be a little wearing to say the least. (How would the previous reviewer like it if he/she was forced to listen to music all day at work which he/she detested.) This is starting to sound like some kind of anti folk festival rant - it isn't meant to, each to his own and all that. The festival does bring a lot of business to the town and it is only once a year. This brings me back to my first point - all I am saying is don't judge a pub on a isolated incident in circumstance which are far from typical.

I have been a customer of The Ship for many years, mainly during the Wadebridge folk festival but also on other irregular occasions, and have always considered that this is one of the best pubs in Cornwall. My experience this weekend has left me quite determind not to set foot in the place whilst the current landlord and staff are in residence. (And I'm not alone in that.) Some words to sum up the experience of myself and some other customers this weekend are: "Ignorant. Rude. Abusive. Inpolite. Unwelcoming." These are the comments that I can pepeat on this site. A barmaid (partner of the landlord) was heard to say "This bunch of to**ers think they own the f***ing pub..." It seems bizarre that anyone in the hospitality trade would not wish to have between 50 and 200 folkies swilling beer and occasionally eating in the pub for four days. They say theres nowt as daft as folk!

Best pub in town centre area. On its own across the bridge so away from all the riff raff on the other side. New management I gather offering reasonably priced food. Good atmosphere.
