user reviews of the Iron Horse, Amersham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Difficult to match the adrenalin of going into the Iron Lung at aged 15, with the challenge of getting served (actually that bit was usually easy) and avoiding trouble with the hard looking locals.
In reality everyone was probably in the same boat - trying to outstare everybody else- so it rarely got too hairy.
And the atmosphere successfully repelled the Kevins (modern day Chavs)into Annies Wine Bar & the Boot & Sharon, to leave behind a decent drinking crowd with plenty of personality.

Coupled with the unusually tasty beer, it will be hard to beat, and sadly missed.

Sorry about the spelling mistakes.

I meant 'Just' and 'Hindsight'. Still no loss (like my spelling).

RIP Iron Horse - It's a shame that when you closed, you let your customers destroy the other pubs in the area - those with customers who wanted to be left alone (perhaps with those who justed wanted to read a newspaper alone)in peace.

In hindsite, a block of flats is the best that could have happened to you.

Pub now demolished, believed flats to be constructed on site.

My girlfriend used to warn me about the "Iron Lung", I did eventually go in.

As with most things she was dead right.

But it was a good location.

I used to drink in the Iron until I was legally allowed to drink elsewhere. This was some 15 years ago. In its hey day it would be filled with the sort of people your mother wouldn't like you to associate with. That was its charm. For most it was a rites of passage experience. I've still yet to find another pub of its ilk. One that would find all of the customers singing in unison. One that had a uniform 'up yours' approach to any one who didn't fit in. One that after a few years was left to curl up and die.
I'm very sorry to see the Iron go. It will be forever in my heart.

I'm gutted this place has gone: 13 years loyal service, some great nights. I will admit that by the end it was just really a pub for the regulars and not really a cash cow that the brewery wanted. Still, there are the memories...

It's closed !
Lots of old faces at its weekend wake,April 2004.
Vibrant funeral.
The pub lost its steam about 10 years ago, when it discouraged customers.

My poor old local!! Where will we all go now? R.I.P. Iron Horse. Long will your memory survive. For anyone who wishes to pay their last respects get down here on Fri, Sat or Sun (23-25th April)Loadsa entertainment and ol' faces.

It is slightly intimidating at first but there's nowhere else quite like it. Desparately in need of refurbishment but should be left alone at the same time. Great for car spotting and i hear it has a garden of some sort.

I lived very close to this pub for a number of years and always felt too intimidated to go in; yet at the same time I bemoaned the lack of a decent pub at Amersham Top (I loathe the Boot and Slipper with a vengence).

However, towards the end of my stay in Amersham I started going in. I did find it quite intimidating but soon grew to rather like it.

Agree that run by a good landlord/lady it could be an excellent pub. It will be a disgrace if it is turned into flats.

I've been to the Iron Horse a few times, and it is without doubt the most invigorating drinking experience one could hope for. You've got everything - angry locals, offensive bar staff, beer with a unique taste, and the best decorated toilets in the business. Go there. It will change your life.

Yeah its a bit of a dive and the beer is pretty ropey, but this is where i formed my boozing habits and you can be who you want to be in here and no one bats an eyelid. The staff there at the moment are great too, especially the sarcastic landlady......

what the hell are u talking about chris?? this pub is reminiscent of an old groggy dark church. nothing in it has any sort of life at all. the atmosphere is non existent, the pool tables are awful and the stench of the place is overpowering. and whats more it is filled with long-haired dirty drunks. need i say more?! i cant even begin to try and rate this place. luckily things will change very soon. watch this space.....(there may b a few ppl interested in a complete revamp!)

Best Days are behind this place. This used to be a top pub for rockers and was always packed to the rafters! Tumbleweeds drift by nowadays - tragedy that the brewery just let it die!

After visiting this hole, you'd never criticise any other pub again. The 'Amersham' message-board notes that the owners want to redevelop the site into flats. I'd prefer a decent pub - being next to the station should guarantee a regular influx of customers (if a complete revamp took place).

1/10 for this toilet.

its fantastic: the pool, the staff, the seating, the drink and the clientel are superb

10/10

Sorry - love this pub, one of Amershams best kept secrets. The staff are so friendly, and the locals are right laugh. Not necessarily a pub to pop into - but as a local you cannot ask for anything more.
