please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We had another disappointing visit to the Welkin on Wednesday night. As Wetherspoon's go, this is poorer than average. But it always seems to be busy. The ale selection was dominated by Christmas ales. Sharp's Doom Bar, Ruddles Best & Greene King Abbot are the regular ales. Guests were Greene King Abbot Reserve, Inveralmond Bheira, Otter Claus, Daleside Santa's Progress, Bateman's Rosey Nosey & Cotleigh Red Nose Reinbeer. Staff seemed a bit too keen to point out that they were closing soon.

Like others had said this place is quite awkwardly shaped and looks like the interior may be inspired by a Soviet Union office building. And once again another a Wetherspoons in the centre of Liverpool with pretty poor customer service. I came up to the bar to see a few lads getting shown the door because one of them was 'too drunk', the one they said was too drunk had told them he had a speech impediment but the staff were having none of it, I would personally have sided with him as they didn't seem drunk in my own observation and the man they were kicking out wasn't slurring his words or anything but there you go. Anyway, this older lad and I were stood at the bar for a while waiting to be served, it seems though that if you are loud you should expect to be served first as these two other lads out of nowhere with daft haircuts and acting like showmen got served immediately, fair to say the lad next to me was as unimpressed as I was, it may be worth adding that it wasn't busy either. I went for a pint of 'Lurcher Stout' which was just okay and barely had any flavour.

First of 7 pubs in Liverpool yesterday. It was busy on a Sunday lunchtime. This isn't the best Wetherspoons in Liverpool. But it's popular as it's very close to the main shopping centre and in the Cavern Quarter. Ales were Greene King Abbot & Abbot Reserve, Ruddles Best, Oakham JHB, Cotswold Spring OSM, Sharps Doom Bar, Thwaites Wainwright & Everards Terrapin. None of the 4 we tried were any good. No real ciders are stocked.

Saturday morning around 11 am and the place is packed solid - most people having breakfast which is one of Wetherspoon's better offers. Several stag/hen parties obviously getting ready for a day round the City's boozers (or perhaps getting over last nights drinking). Anyway service was pretty good with bar staff not nipping off to servce food - they actually appeared to have special waiting staff just serving food. Swift half of Robinson's Road Runner and then onto the main business of the day (proper pubs)

After finally locating the Tavern on the Green in the Liverpool One shopping centre, we retreated to the Welkin in the Cavern Quarter. I hadn't been here for nearly 3 years. But little has changed. It was very busy on our Saturday lunchtime visit, with a mixture of shoppers and people starting their evenings out a little early. Beers on were Peerless Full Whack & Triple Blond, Wolf Whistle, Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best, Yeovil Star Gazer, David Ramsbury Smuttynose Mild, Ramsbury Flint Knapper & George Wright Longboat. Ciders were Westons Old Rosie, Cider Twist & Marcle Hill & Mr Whiteheads Boxing Dog. Was served fairly quickly. Will upgrade my rating slightly.

Went in here last Saturday (19th Nov) after watching Tranmere v Sheffield Wednesday. Bit tucked away, bit of an odd shape and quite small, I had Moorhouse APA which was good, a Peerless beer and another by Coach House. The place was packed with diners, leaving just a handful of those drinking stood at the bar. Staff polite and friendly, but not a special pub. Average Spoons.

2 staff serving at 6 pm on a busy Friday evening?
Come on Tim; get it sorted as I walked out and will continue to do so when I dont think Im going to get served within about 20 minutes.

The wife and I had lunch here today. It was very busy but that is hardly an excuse for failing to provide the cheddar cheese on my wife's Ploughmans Lunch! This was rectified after a five minute wait. I had ham, egg and chips which was ok as was the accompanying pint of Phoenix 'Double Gold'.
This is a great place to people watch. Noisy families, shoppers, red-faced old men and the odd baddie.
One unkempt bloke walked through the pub twice whilst looking sideways at handbags and shopping. A young family left and a down and out immediately pounced on the un-eaten food and scurried out of the pub!
A great place for entertainment!

Curious and unhelpful layout means that the bar in somewhat inconveniently placed. The narrow frontages at each end of the building also mean that there is little in the way of natural light (a situation made worse by most of the windows being covered by large posters). However, it has a reasonable selection of beers from the 10 handpumps, including a fine pint of the local Cains IPA at just 1.60.

I cant see what everyone is moaning about, of course its gonna be busy it is is the middle of Liverpool City Centre and at the bottom of one of the biggest tourist sites in the City, I have been here every time I have visited Liverpool and each time the service is impecable, obviously it wont be spot on all the time due to the sheer nnumber of customers they have coming through there doors. This is the best out of many weatherspoond I have visited by far and I will be visiting there next time I am in the city, I recomend this to everyone

Soulless modern Wetherspoons branch. Whilst we stayed near the door on the ground floor, it was clear that this pub was really busy on the Friday afternoon we visited. There were very few tables available. The interior decor was unimpressive. The wood flooring where we sat was warped and being held together by some duct tape. One can only assume that rainwater had leaked in from the entrance mat. Service was slow as usual and the choice of real ales was poor. George Wright Blue Moon, Marstons Pedigree, Ruddles Best, Greene King Abbot Ale and Cains Sundowner were available. On the plus side I did avail myself of a Westons Organic Vintage cider from the fridge, whilst Old Rosie was also available. Seeing two Chinese knock-off DVD sellers within the space of 10 minutes was also impressive! The police driving around the Cavern Quarter didn't seem too bothered.

Had a pint of Hyde's Spin Doctor at their recent beer festival. It was watery, flat & acidic. How on earth this pub has cask mark accreditation is beyond me.

A very busy pub.
Lots of noisy scallies at the weekend.
I've had more bad experiences than good in here, including vinegar beer.

A relatively good Spoons but definitely a worse performance than my last visit, due almost entirely to low staffing which seems to be responsible for 90% of Spoons poor service reputation. GK IPA, Abbot, Pedigree and Tom Woods on handpump with many more interesting beers coming soon - grrr. Usual range of kegs, too boring to list. The Tom Woods was cloudy and thin and shouldnt really have been on sale. Curry night so it was quite busy, probably why most staff were hiding in the kitchen.

It's a bit strange for a Wetherspoons is this one. It's long and thin and sort of L shaped. The decor and the tables/chairs etc aren't the usual fare for a Wetherspoons either. They also close very early. Thursday night 10:45, all the sparklers removed and being washed. We managed to get a drink, but they started to lower the shutters (also unusual) at dead on 11. We had to drink up fairly sharpish. Not very welcoming but at least they did have a guest beer on the bar. Given the early closing and that food service finishes 1 hour before, there were still lot's of tables with plates on. Not the greatest experience.

The better of the two 'spoons in the city centre, service is usually a good bit faster in here than the other place but expect the usual JDW uncleared filthy tables and not many beers actually on sale as opposed to on the clip. Beer quality is variable but it can be good.

Neat Matthew Street this is not one of my favourite Wetherspoons. It is a bit sterile. Downstairs is a long, narrow seating area with the main bar at the end. Upstairs there is a smaller bar & some booths. Like most Wetherspoons it can take a while to be served.
happytyskie - 2 Jan 2009 12:10
Oh dear - I decided to give this place a 2nd chance a couple of days ago but what a mistake. Asked for a pint of Marstons Pedigree which is often the safest option. The barrel had just been changed and I ended up with the 1st pint which was very watery and had no taste. It was warm as well which is rare for Wetherspoons!

I was going to take it back and ask for a new pint but a queue of 20+ people (yes a queue!) had appeared at the bar. Once again the bar staff (all 2 of them) were busy taking food orders and making cups of tea and coffee! Starbucks and Costa Coffee have got some competition!!!

It's Saturday = very busy. Wetherspoons - try employing more than 3 members of staff (that don't waste time by talking to each other when they should be serving!) I can't wait more than 5 minutes to get served, especially when the 3 bar staff are making tea and coffee for customers to go with their meal. (Why do people go to the pub and drink tea and coffee???) Beer festival had finished but I left before I could find out how much a pint cost! Went to First National bar on James Street - got served straight away because it was empty!

Been here twice in last couple of weeks. Beer festival on at the moment - all ales 1.69. Had a pint of Viking Skull (I think!) - very strong and had a strange taste! Friendly staff and very busy, even at 10.45am. One of the better Wetherspoons I've been to but suffering from simlair problems like not enough staff and dirty tables.
mattbeer - 16 Nov 2008 19:16
Staff always hard-working,polite and friendly. This place gets really busy, almost as soon as it opens.I've had many a fine breakfast here, and the beer is of good quality.Suffers from the sheer numbers of punters as do all city wetherspoons pubs;maybe a small increase in prices would be offset by a small increase in staff.
delstefan - 16 Nov 2008 12:31
Not a bad pub at all. Very friendly and you always get as near to a pint as possible in an unlined glass. Perhaps one or two of the staff at the Runcorn Weatherspoons should be sent to The Welkin for a spot of training on how to serve beer.
Doc_Holliday - 18 Sep 2008 16:07
As long as your hopes aren't set too high, then you shouldn't be disappointed with this pub. The food is acceptable, competently prepared and promptly delivered to your table. The beer comes in an acceptably wide variety. Indeed, I sampled a Ukrainian wheat beer that I, in my ignorance, mistook for Erdinger; but it was very nice nonetheless.

Called at The Welkin for breakfast at about 9.30 am recently, and was pleasantly surprised to see not only how busy it was, but also by the clientele. Inevitably, there were a few of the usual serial Wetherspoon all-day drinkers, but the place was mainly populated by guys (and a few girls) in hard hats and high-viz jackets or vests taking a breakfast break from the numerous nearby building sites. But not one of them was drinking alcohol.

Being on holiday, I do admit to having a pint of Pedigree (which was pretty good) with my breakfast, but it is easy to see why The Welkin breakfasts are so popular with non-drinkers quick service, good quality, and very good value for money.

Very pleasant surprise. The George Wright beers were great and at 3.60-ish for both, good value. Compared with 5.20 for two similar beers served at a hostelry associated with bread and insects, The Welkin offers good value. Would be nice if they cleaned the place up a bit though. When I visited there was food, serviettes and dirty tables a-plenty.

Nice Spoons on 2 levels, although it was like a sauna when visited last weekend! 7/10

Decent L shaped pub, good food, nice layout & usually filled with lots of younger sober women(unusual for a Wethers pub).
