Proper free house where I enjoyed an excellent pint of Rock Mild this lunchtime. Well worth a visit. 9/10.

This was my pub of the day in Nottinghamshire. Again, the exterior gave no indication as to the quality of the interior. This is a typical town drinkers boozer with friendly staff, plenty of real ales and lots of seating on which to enjoy them. Beers on during my visit were Burton Bridge Bridge Bitter, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Rudgate Jorvik Blonde & Battle Axe, Thwaites Nutty Black, Nottingham Legend & Supreme Bitter & Leeds Best. Cider was Westons Old Rosie. I thoroughly recommend this pub, which is sat in the shadow of the old Shipstone Brewery.

Some great beers on and good variety of them in terms of strength, type, etc. Just five minutes from Shipstone Street Tram Stop as well.

We arrived too early as it didn't open till 12 noon but it was worth the wait. As has been said - it is the old S hipstone's brewery tap with much breweriana around the bar areas. Good selection of beers (a bit surprised to see Fullers London Pride and Deuchars IPA as regulars though). Anyway, we had Titanic and Flipside ales on our visit and it was all very pleasant! From the tram stop to the pub you pass the old brewery which is a majestic piece of architecture and happily has found another use and,I understand, parts have been refurbished internally. Shame it doesn't brew Shippo's fine beers any more.

Excellent free house. Nine beers on. I had a very excellent pint of Adnams Regatta. Lots of brewery memorabilia around the place. I shall definitely visit this place again.

I'm a bit surprised that this pub hasn't had a BITE posting for nearly 20 months - so here we go.

The Horse and Groom is a fine traditional free house that is situated close to the splendid red-brick Victorian edifice that used to be Shipstone's Brewery. It's worth a walk past to admire the architecture before popping in to slake one's thirst in what was apparently the Shipstone's Brewery tap. Indeed the pub still bears the Shipstone's lettering outside on the front wall and inside is various Shipstone's memorabilia including brewery trays and horse and dray photos.

It's a single bar split level pub with distinct areas. On the left as you go in is a small cosy snug with a fireplace and a Bass mirror. The main bar area has plenty of other brewery mirrors and memorabilia and a reasonably cosy traditional feel. At the back is a large function room where I gather that live music is occasionally staged.

There's 9 pumps serving a fine range of real ales. On my visit, these included beers from Rudgate, Slaters together with better known beers such as London Pride and Deuchars IPA. The pub is listed in the 2009 GBG. Unfortunately, I just missed a Yorkshire Beer Festival by a couple of days.

I have to confess that I can't remember what I drank in here, but I do remember staying longer than intended and falling behind my carefully pre-planned schedule.

This is another pub that is easily accessible by tram ( Shipstone Street stop ) and can be combined with a visit to the Fox and Crown ( Alcazar ) , on which I've just posted.

I'll definitely try and come here again

An excellent pub, with plenty of beers to choose from.

Haven't been in for a while and was disappointed with the quality of the beers I tried. I hope this was a one off as the beer's usually of a very high standard.

Very good selection of beers and a nice ambience. Nice to see the Shipstone sign still on the outside and of course the old brewery building still stands next door. Too many dark beers? That makes a pleasant change!

Sad to report that the last few visits to the Horse and Groom have been very dissapointing. They are not stocking many light beers, in fact too many dark beers. Had to move on after 1 pint to the Plough at Radford.

Excellent ales all very well kept, and got top marks from casque marque.Good mature adult clientele and good back room for music and beer festivals!Guests -Absolution,Pale Rider and Hartington IPA - my top 3!
2 minus points . Can be a bit smokey and gets too warm, but the beer makes up for it.
Highly recommended - best ale in Notingham !

A great pub - consistantly the best beer I've ever sampled - Newton's Old Drop is just wonderful. Staff very friendly and know their beer.

This is a real gem that serves up to 8 real ales in one go. I have never had a bad pint in here.

My favourite ale of all time was on last time I went in - Nottingham Extra Pale Ale - a truly remarkable beer.

It's only a short walk from the Shipstone St, Wilkinson St and Radford Road tram stops.

There are 2 or 3 side rooms and I believe there is a bit of a beer garden, though I've never tried it.
