nice pub just be careful when ordering beer as the mark up on half pints is pretty severe. A pint of ruby rustler was 4.25 but it was 2.95 a half. As I was driving I ordered a half but refused to pay their price and walked out so I cannot comment on the quality of the beer.

Recently refurbished and now a very cosy and welcoming pub. We love the food, particularly the Sunday roasts. Word is going round about the chef, so be sure to book on a Sunday. Highly recommended!

Having only recently changed hands, my wife and I decided to go for a meal here to celebrate her going on maternity leave.
What can I say, the food has certainly improved, no doubt due to the new management and chef having migrated across from a well known local hotel. Despite only taking over a couple of weeks before we went there, the service was very well organised and attentive, though not so much as to be over powering. The food was well presented overall, the bread board starter containing a good selection of breads, though it would have been nicer to have the Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar seperate, not mixed together in one pot, a personal view perhaps. My wifes main course was a delight on the eye, salmon fillet cooked to perfection (in her view) served with asparagus and baby carrots. My main, a dish of tortellini with Sun dried tomatoes tasted very nice, along with the half garlic ciabatta. For dessert, a word of caution, if the manager offers you Tira Misu, beware, it is VERY rich, though enjoyable none the less ;)
Overall the night cost just over 50 for the two of us, money well spent.
If your looking for a good night out, in a warm and welcoming environment, with food that looks and taste the part, we both highly recommend this place, much changed from its previous incarnations under H+W.

The old pub (Green Dragon, a favourite bar billiards haunt) seemed to suffer when the (Witherspoons) Lynd Cross opened in competition. Now a gastropub.
|
Nice place - a definite move up from its old self as the Green Dragon.
More set up for food, although there is a separate bar area.
Food was great, if a bit on the pricey side.

Olive Branch what can i Say. Went there to celeberate with a few friends, and couldnt have decided on a better place than this, from the moment we walked in ,it was amazing. The Staff very friendly, knowledgeable and friendly. We can actually see what food was coming out of the kitchen, only shows they are making fresh food. Atlast a place in Horsham where you get real British food and freshly cooked. I had the Minestrone Soup, which the waitress told me was the best soup she has ever tasted, and true to the word it was fresh and vibrant. Many restaurants claim to have fresh produce but these guys certainly do, the Shepherds Pie had real Lamb Shanks not out of a packet, i could see the Chef pop it into a oven and bake it like you would do at home, the others had the Platter to Share and it was too much on it to eat, Stargazy pie cooked to perfection and Puddings actually looked and was home-made and tasted yummy, just the way my Gran would make it, i will give it a 10/10 and recommend it to everyone, will definetely go there soon, cant wait.

Not sure what to make of this place. Hall & Woodhouse so the beer was guaranteed to be poor. Settled for a glass full of fizzy italian chemicals instead. Together with a half of cider, that was 6 gone. The London prices continued into there restuarant.
The food was nice enough - Sharing fish platter to start with, a steak and a fish pie. one sweet, one coffee and a bottle of wine. 70. Portions nothing exciting. Trying to be trend by using unsual serving dishes. Dont let them kid you that anything is home cooked. Apart from the steaks everything was clearly prepacked and portion controlled - the only real benefit to the customer of being able to see into an "open" style kitchen - why bother when your are serving microwaved mash out of a plastic box and adding the empty plastic box to stack for washing later. The "hand cut chips" were clearly mccains
Saying all that the ambience was conducive to a special night out. Decor very similar to The Black Jug, but without the real home cooked food and the huge range of ales
|
London prices plus? I'm sorry but no, the only London prices this is more expensive than are those of greasy and wether spoon's!
Went there with a gorup of 6 to celebrate my daughters 21st with the family. Three course meal with drinks, and a post meal snifter, excellent service, superb food - well presented well cooked and full of flavour for 200.
Ale range is limited, lager range is not and the emphasis is clearly on dining. Wine list is pretty standard but nice to see a viognier and a riesling for those of us who don't 'do' chardonnay.
Not quite in the Black Jug league but still very very good by local standards.

Having read the comment left on the 25th June we were slightly worried that this was going to be an overpriced waste of time but thought everything deserves a try at least once and we had vouchers for free wine so couldn't say no! The menu was varied and offered a nice mix of traditional pub food and some more elegant dishes. I ordered the pork belly, others had the lamb shank sheppards pie, mushroom risotto and roast chicken salad. The chef was very accommodating offering to make a gluten free sauce to accompany my pork belly. The food came in a reasonable amount of time and was presented very well but most importantly was to a very high standard. The waiting staff were polite but friendly. Overall a very nice meal and would definitely recommend to others.

Having read the only review on this site, which actually relates to this pub, we visited with some trepidation. We were however very pleasantly suprised, we were greeted warmly on arival and offered a choice of seating areas. The menu is varied offering some traditional and some more unusual choices. I chose the Belly of Pork and my husband the fish and chips, both meals were presented beautifully and were well cooked. The homemade tomato ketchup and tartare sauce an extra touch which was appreciated. The overall experience was enjoyable and good value for a restaurant which is providing well cooked, good freshly prepared food.

Popped into the Olive Branch, previously Green Dragon, with intention to have dinner. Beer selection was limited (three real ales draught) but impressive half moon dispenser for lagers... Lucky was sitting down when saw the menu. Not knowing the kitchen, was not prepared to pay the amounts requested (London prices plus) for any of the items on it. Neither was there any kind of justification in menu for the prices, like homemade (for all I know the minestrone could be out of a packet) or what came with it. Staff were pretty ignorant about it too ("it says in the menu what it is served with"), so chose to go couple of blocks up for my dinner. Love the new look, but that's about all ... Would love to pop in again for a pint, but will it be there in six months time?
|
Lets be honest though, the name may change, but everyone will still know it as The Green Dragon. They changed the name of the local nightclub to 'The Chameleon Bar' however everyone i talk to still calls it Shelleys, yet another good example of a local name....
|
Why do these pub companies believe a change in name is so good, what about tradition, history and values. Long Live The Green Dragon !
|
Farewell to the Green Dragon, soon to return as The Olive Branch....
|
Pretty much a student / young persons pub, seems like they stumble between here and the Lynd Cross until they've drunk enough to fall over. Bouncers and loud music on weekend evenings. If you've been to commercial pubs in the centre of any british city, you'll know exactly what to expect...
|
I called into the Green Dragon this evening for a drink after work before a 2 hour journey home. When I returned to my car it was clamped and I had to pay 170 to get it released from the pub car park. The pub staff were unsympathetic to my plight.Several phone calls to the pub this evening have been ignored. I'm disgusted and intend taking legal action and reportingthis matter to the local newspaper.
|
What a hole, i was visiting friends and got dragged into this pub and even got roped into the pub quiz, which seemed pointless as according to my friends the group of pervy middle aged men with google on their phones always win. Took ages to get served except after adjusting my top for maximum cleavage the quizmaster eventually served me. Toilets were a state ,and the area where we were sitting stank of mold. In all i dont think i will be returning to this pub the next time im visiting friends
|
Hall and Woodhouse should be ashamed
|
this pub has gone downhill in atmosphere. it's a shame because only 3 years ago it was quite a cosy and friendly pub! now its turned into a young persons pub! :(
|
This pub has everything you need, if by 'everything' you mean 'nothing' and by 'you need' you mean 'including walls'.
|
Nice pint of Fursty Ferret was quaffed here but was 3.10 a pint, 7/10
|
The pub is a tad rough and tarty, but otherwise ok with drinks and music!
|
Hello, I'm Gwen, from France. Several years ago, in 1997, my friend Brad Albrecht worked in this pub, the Green Dragon in Horsham and I would like to have some news from him. If someone knows him, perhaps you could give him my message ? Here is my email : [email protected] Many thanks for your help! Regards, Gwen

Hey is There anybody who drinks at the Green Dragon, who used to drink there during mid-seventies and eighties. From Bill Murcutt to Marion(and Jim Todd). I was a regular during those times mostly in the snug bar, and am now living in Australia. I would love to heasr from anyone who still drinks there from that period. Cheers Steve r

i am a regular at the green dragon and havent been to another pub on a night out since the first time i stepped through the door admittly the food is not as good as mine own but then what chef would admit to that. the bar staff are all friendly and well presented and the manageress is lovely and in my opnion runs one of the best pubs i have ever been to. great night out thursday through friday pool tables excellent and well maintained not a bad word to say about the place.

A brilliant pub at night, always packed and with the 3 sections (pool tables, music side, seating area) they cater for everything. Admittedly it doesnt seem great for during the day, the Lynd seems to be better service wise for food, but nothing beats a night out in the dragon!
anonymous - 25 Jun 2007 15:09 |
A good pub to go into if you're banned from the Lynd Cross, full of chavs.
|
Have just visited the pub and was appalled by the service or lack there of - Friday lunchtime and only on person behind the bar expected to serve drinks take food orders and wait tables. Waited 10 mins for the girl to appear to take drink and food order - bearing in mind we order baguettes - it then took a further 30 minutes for my order to appear - they got my husbands order wrong and then took a further 15 mins to bring out his order by which time i had to go back to work - we were refunded for his food but tried to complain to the manager to be told she was in the kitchen cooking - I will not be going back!
|
Toilets are now clean and presentable, and the flat screen in the bar area is a welcome addition. It is good to see that the manageress has seen the error of her ways an introduced a cheaper menu after the ridiculously expensive gourmet one was shunned by customers to go to the Lynd next door.
They are now toying with Live music on a Friday, this went down very well with all concerned, keep up the good work there.
|
I find it very sad that people want to slate the Green Dragon and those that work there.
I am a true regualr drinker there who has seen many managers pass through the doors, some doing better jobs than others. The pub now looks like it is loved, just like it used to back in the day. It has a promising future ahead.

I couldn't agree more with the anonymous comment below - tiamaria, I'm not sure you were in the same Green Dragon as everyone else. I'm in there almost everynight and I can't disagree with the anon comment
|
i disagree with the last comment. yes the staff dance around but it is always after they have made sure everyone has been served. at least the staff have fun at work and enjoy what they are doing as well as doing their job well from what i can see. the toilets look alot better than they did which im sure most will agree. i have seen the manager work behind the bar during the week and at the weekend. she always seems to jump behind the bar when she sees a customer waiting, which you dont see very often in many other pubs.
|
The previous comment "the staff are always smiling" makes me wonder if this is the same pub we're talking about. There is in fact one barmaid in there where you're lucky to get a pint in your pint glass after all her dancing and talking to friends and trying to put ice down peoples clothing. If after all that she finally serves you then yes, you're right the dragon is a nice place to drink in.
I wont comment on the manager as I never see her actually working behind the bar - she's always off doing other things.
The toilets took 11 days? What for? To replace 6 urinals with 4, a dodgy coat of paint, UV lights in the cubicles to help you check you've left no coke behind for the police and a external door that now goes no where.
I'm posting anonymously, I'm sure you'll understand why.
The only thing still wrong with this pub is the management, the sooner someone with liqueur-lead experience is put into this role the better.
anonymous - 11 Mar 2007 20:19 |
The Green Dragon is a great place to drink. There is a friendly atmosphere and the staff are always smiling. Been a local here for 5 years and wouldnt go anywhere else. The manager now is doing a great job. The toilets have now been refurbed, which was the only thing wrong with the pub, which now look good
anonymous - 10 Mar 2007 17:17 |
Well it's finally happened... As I type, a bunch of monkeys are finally ripping out the ever so offensive toilets at the Green Dragon. About time really, to say they were bad would be an understatement but the gents hasn't had a light bulb in one of the cubicles since mid January and at last count had 5 bulbs missing before the closure.
Normally I'd agree with this unique cost-cutting technique but not to the extent of putting customers' safety at risk. These bulbs would only have been replaced after someone had tripped and hurt themselves.
The Dragon is shut for 10 days but with its clientele having to drink elsewhere for what must seem an eternity will they come back? The prices wont draw back the crowds so hopefully a morbid curiosity to see if the refit was worth the wait will do the job.
|
Why is it everyone that slates this pub refuses to put there name by what they've written? For goodness sake if you've got something to say, be proud of it.
Incidentally, the manager was not sacked, HDC decided that they no longer wanted him as DPS and so he has been moved to another pub with Hall and Woodhouse. A better paid one as i'm lead to believe.
With the new landlady in place the pub seems to have become rather quiet, Kareoke, a night once packed in both the lounge and the bar, now seems to be very slow for trade, Fridays are also rather quiet. Saturdays have now taken a turn where trade arrives at around 9pm and bubbles along until 12 when most leave for Shelleys (the local latenight bar).
Overall i still feel the Green Dragon is a nice pub to come to, with good food and a pleasant atmosphere. To say that it is disgusting and that Hall and Woodhouse should get rid of it is frankly ludicrous.
|
Well I have to completely disagree. The manager would not have been sacked if he had been doing a good enough job and the place is always a mess. Why should anyone working there ahve to be told there's broken glass and shit on the walls owing to no loo roll again? If they were doing there job even half as efficient as they should they'd maybe notice these things?? Hall and Woodhouse should ditch this pub..it's disgusting.

Have been drinking in the Dragon for a long time and have seen it under various Managers. Just need to say now that i think it is as good if not better than it has ever been. Friendly and decent staff. Whether you fancy a quiet beer or a few noisy ones the Dragon is the place to be!!!!!!
|
The bar staff are always friendly, and always check i.d. Saturday's the best night of the week, with thursday coming in close second. Also available is a pub quiz on tuesday with free entry and 50 jackpot for those clever enough.

A fantastic pub, enjoyed by all.
anonymous - 7 Jun 2006 23:57 |
It is remarkable to note that those slating this pub, seem all to be anonymous..... This pub has been my local haunt for the best part of two years now, and as such i find very little wrong with it. Whilst there is a limit selection of beer on offer, what must be remembered is that this is an independant public house run by an independant brewery so unlike 'spoons or other national chains wont have such a broad selection.
The selection of entertainment in the pub is also quite good, with Kareoke and quiz night being personal favorites. I look forward to the world cup with all the football on the two rather large projecion screens they have. And, unlike 'spoons there has been no mention of banning the St George Cross.........
Bar staff are friendly though wont take any crap from the public, the same for the doorstaff. It is also good to see women working the door as well as men.

Rubbish pub, dirty, disgusting ladies toilets, rude doorstaff
anonymous - 23 May 2006 21:07 |
Don't know waht the heck last comment is all about as this is the only pub in Horsham to have been caught in police traps to serve under agers not once, twice...but FOUR times...and counting. It's pathetic. Iwent in there the other night when doorstaff were on and I saw at least three girls in there who I know for a fact are 17. It'sa a joke. And I've never had the displeasure of having to walk past the most rude, surly doorstaff ever, and that's ever. Needless to say, if I ever decide to bother with these premises again, it will only be to reconfirm this is a crap pub.
anonymous - 1 May 2006 20:00 |
I would just like to comment i the post bellow. the police did a honey trap sting when the bouncers were not there and they are very strict on ID. Most popular pub Are full of smoke as the place is usually packed on a Friday and Saturday night. good music and good food. but as far as i am concerned beer is beer!

A building that is claimed to originally date from 1449 or earlier, although this is not immediately obvious from its outward appearance and setting. Almost next door to Wetherspoons, the Green Dragon is an attractive, low, two-storey pub, the top half red tiled, the lower cream painted. Despite the ancient sounding street name, post-war development has rendered the town centre end of this historic thoroughfare indistinguishable from somewhere in Crawley. The pubs roomy, wooden beamed interior rambles around a large, central bar with two serving points and sets of handpumps. There are conventional stools, chairs and tables to the left of the front entrance, which is like a lounge area, and high backed benches and wooden tables to the right. The bar, these furnishings and fittings to the right, plus some modern exposed brickwork, all appear to be the result of a recent refit. Nonetheless, there is on the right side interior, framed under protective glass, a small exposed area of original wattle and daub wall. There is much lunchtime food trade today, but spare seating can be found in a modern rear extension, a gaming area big enough to house two pool tables, a dartboard plus a few tables and chairs. I rest here and sip my half of Badger Festive Pheasant (1.35), a rich, ruby red seasonal replacement for Fursty Ferret. Ex King and Barnes and now Hall and Woodhouse owned, this historic pub also offers King and Barnes Sussex Bitter, Badger Best Bitter and Tanglefoot. A GBG entry from 1984-86, it also appeared in 2002. It has a current Cask Marque certificate, and the beer is decently kept.
|
Going RAPIDLY down hill since K and B dropped out of Horsham, latest Landlady is trying to pull the pub back into shape, unfortunatley needs a lot more work. Beer has lost care that previous Landlady and Partner used to give it. Also food has never picked up and is no longer served until late.
