The pub has recently had a major makeover and is now called 'The Hertford Bell'. I will do an updated review once the refurbishment is complete and I have had a chance to visit.

Pleasant if unexceptional Greene King pub. OK if passing, but probably not worth making a special trip to.

The Duncombe Arms was my final pub of the night yesterday. It is a Greene King pub, but has a decent range of guest ales. In addition to their IPA & Abbot, they had Potbelly Beijing Black, Cliff Quay Tumble Home & Ossett Silver King. The cider was Thistly Cross Whisky Cask. The interior is fairly open-plan. But unfortunately a quiz was taking place. This meant that all tables were reserved and standing at the bar with silence apart from the women reading the quiz questions and the occasional bit of banter. Service was fairly inattentive. The barman was one of those that would be more suited to a nightclub with bottle spinning antics. But nevertheless this is another decent option for Hertford. Just don't pick a Thursday night.

A great pub. We were visiting from out of town and had an excellent Sunday lunch, promptly served, in the large beer garden. Only downside was the ales - just IPA and Abbot. Recommended.

Our old local in a very different incarnation when it was run by Dennis and Audrey, like parents of one enormous and very happy family. What fun was had there over the years. The interior is unrecognisable but the pub is run by an excellent, energetic and creative landlady who is working hard to bring it back to life. The beer is consistently good, the service friendly and the food, we understand, good value for money.

This place isnt going to win any awards, but I found the staff and other clientele to be friendly enough. Greene King IPA and Abbot are still the only ale offerings, but my pint of Guinness was well served.
I spotted a couple of plasma screens for the showing of Sky Sports and there was some decent background music playing.
I wouldnt rush back here, but there is a nice beer garden out the back handy for the summer months.

Visited the Duncombe Arms last night as a relation was playing in the band that was on. Most of the previous posts are quite dated but can confirm that not a lot seems to have changed and on this particular Saturday night this was a lively good town centre pub to be in. Attracts a fairly young crowd, but not too young and I was held up at the bar a couple of times as the bar staff diligently checked the ID of anyone who didnt look like they were old enough to have short and curlies. The demographic changed a bit during the evening as the young party crowd moved on and others interested in the live music and the extended (till 12.) licensing hours moved in. Got quite rowdy during the second set but was only locals and the band followers intent on having a good time and as mentioned below was never serious. The only slight negative was that the only cask ale was the usual Green King fair of IPA and Abbot. So not very inspiring, but well kept all the same.

Not a bad pub, allows kids during the day. Cheap and decent pub food. Live acts and bands at the weekend. Quite rowdy but never serious. Good warm up pub or a daytime quiet drink.

Good beers all week. Youngsters Fri/Sat. Mixed crowd the rest of the time. Bands can be good on Sat night (extension).

A great winter pub this one. Sit by the open log fire drinking a bloody mary while the rain pours down outside! Not so appealing in the summer though. Food's quite cheap too.
