CLOSED. Morrisons hacked it about to be a shop but then pulled out and left it as a never to be pub again.

It has gone.

I have also had the great pleasure of working with pat and pauline and must say that i think the negative comments can only be from people that do not like change..they were fantasic to work for and have been greatly missed from both the pubs i had the pleasure to work with them in...1 of the pubs they left over 5 years ago now and still people talk of the good old days when they were the managers..always with a firm but fare approach and very much the heartbeat of the pub...i miss them terribley as do many others and cannot wait to see them again!!

In reply to some comments posted on here i would like to say i worked for Pat and Pauline for a year or so and still do in their other pub named The Albion. I have never had such fun working for them both and have never heard such good feedback from the customers who come into the albion. They are the BEST Landlords by far and they will make something of the Hammer and Tongs. Give them a chance and you will be surprised. Your both missed madly by us all here.

Can't agree with the last 2 review's. It didn't smell, nor did it look grim, and more importantly the beer was spot on!! I think we need to give the new gaffers a fair crack here. Let's face it, the Hammer will always be a hard pub for anyone new to crack. Mim and Kev took it to another level after John lost interest, perhaps Pat and Pauline can take it that one step further!!
|
Gotta say I agree with the last review, it smells in there and looks grim, come back Mim and Kev.
|
Such a shame Mim and Kev are gone . Just the feeling of the place was really dingy and it felt as if it was smokey in there even tho it wasn't just coz of how grim it has got. Just in general, it was dull and dirty. OOOOhhhh and I got a flea bite in there! P.S the new Landloards other pub has got a rubbish reviews too, so that says it all for the future of the place.

New owners as from today, good luck to them think thay will need it!

Basingstoke Live Fringe Festival - Hammer & Tongs. Another awesome night at the Hammer, 3 bands in one night, the place was buzzing. The quality of the bands are amasing. Most of them will be in the park next week in 100% mucis tent. Thanks Mim & Kevin for another amasing night of music.
|
Oh what a night, not to many people, as a result of a lot going on in town, but O'h what a night, Off the Radar were amasing. Hope they get them back. I also heard they are holding another Saturday afternoon of music & BBQ, if it's anything like the last time, it will be evern more packed and amazing.

Ditto Brian_C. The place is certainly much better since the new landlords took over. You always get a real warm welcome and never feel out of place. Nothing is to much of a problem for them. REAL ALES back on the bar, Hoora!! The food is second to none, in my opinion. Live Band night is great, went last night and listened to 3 great bands playing original music, they were all awesome!!!!

This pub is awful, yes there is new landlord and landlady in there (he seems nice friendly she is a cow bossy with a list of rules) and yes it is cleaner and the have decorated, but they do not know how to run a decent pub I am afraid. They need to realise the pub that they have bought and meet there customers needs instead of isolating that majority of regulars who have taken there custom elsewhere(including the A team pool team) and then they wonder why there pub us permanently empty, who ever heard of no hats and no swearing at all in an estate pub ! They did have one member of bar staff a bubbly redhead around 30ish who gave you a warm welcome and excellent service but unfortunately they were unable to hold on to her which is a shame because she was one of the best things about that place. It is also very expensive Guinness and Kroonenberg at 3.50 ! My advice avoid this place until they get new people running it who hopefully know how to run a decent pub.

Pleasant pub and very good ale from Andwells. A bit pricey at 3 though. Very friendly service.
|
I heard that the landlord has barred a regular of about 30 years. This may seem a trifle silly but the regular's do not OWN the pub so fair play to him. Still my local boozer and improving day by day. Just wish they would get more real ales in and keep rotaing them. Then it would become an awsome local boozer

Since the new Landlords have taken ovewr there has been a marked improvement, everything is so much cleaner, and the garden has been cleaned up also. Now selling great food, at reasoonable prices for a community pub. They intend to refurbish the front bar into a adult only zone
|
Let"s hope they start doing pickled eggs fiftyfive! :O()
|
Under new ownership, now cleaner than before, improving.
|
i agree it is expensive for a local estate pub but always good fun in there and the barmaids always give something to look at!.

...and at 3 for a pint of Guinness you need to be hard working to afford to drink in here!!.Still at those prices you might see a bit less Elizabeth Duke jewellery being worn around the place!! Agree with bish80 about the Spruce Goose though a shocker of a pub well it is a Beefeater!.The 6X pump was throwing out smooth beer! Perhaps the "Hammer" ain"t so bad after all !

Hmmm, mystery person you obviously do not like a good local pub. The people that come into the Hammer are hard working and enjoy a nice pint after work. If you find that intimidating then maybe you should drink in the Spruce Goose!!
|
Really rough littler pub next to one of Basingstoke's roughest council estates. The area is reknown for drug addicts & tattooed single mothers, the clientelle are no different. Give it a miss!

Could do with a lick of paint! Nice boozer though. John keeps things sane and sensible. I love the whole put pint glasses in the fridge policy. Never had such a cold pint.

Friendly pub, especially a chat with Peter
