What a lovely pub this is! Popped in for the first time last week, and really enjoyed it. Beer was fantastic, service superb, and the atmosphere excellent. I will definately be making a return visit soon.

Just had a sunday lunch there this week in there restaurant erea the food was the best i have ever had in my life. A choice of four meats cooked to perfection was so succulent it just melted in your mouth. The veg was also just cooked the right way and the gravey was to die for. I must admit my family do like the carvary down the road, but at long last i have converted them into enjoying fresh properly cooked food. Well done at the fox and congrats to the chef on making my life better as i will never have to cook sunday lunch again. See you next week.

It's not a bad pub in this area... You have The Barley Mow within almost walking-distance from The Fox (although I would never reccomend going there). It's not bad customer service, the food is not bad with fair prices, the beer is always lovely and refreshing. They have a big garden and nice shelter for smokers, they've really done a good job. It really is, just a pub... but a good one.
nightsmoker - 12 Oct 2009 00:48
Myself and a group of work collegues went here on Friday lunchtime at my suggestion, so I was a bit nervous about what we would find. No worries though. The beer was excellent, as was the food and the service. This is a proper pub, where you feel you are being welcommed into someones home as their guest. We will certainly be returning in the near future.

I am pleased to report that Micheal Courage as of the 20th July will no longer have anything to do with this pub the new licensees will be the current managers Glen and Lesley who have been successful in there bid to retain the pub, which is great news! This pub can now go from strength to strength as a lot of what they have wanted to do over the last few years has been curtailed by Mr Courage. This is great country pub, with a warm and welcoming environment, great beers, and real ales . . . .Glen regular receives compliments on there excellent condition, with reasonable prices making it either compatible with or cheaper than other local pub. They also serve delicious home made food and the best Sunday dinner in Hampshire! They have regular live music and also a great regular music quiz, check the blackboards for updates. The Fox has a bright future ahead, so coming in and see what is going on.

Haven't been here in years - shame it's gone downhill. Used to be a nice village pub, but dogs no longer welcome, lights & locks don't work in the gents. Beer and food far too expensive and unfortunately the whole pub is just dirty. No wonder it's empty.
dartman - 17 Feb 2009 14:41
Great friendly pub with very good food, took the family recently for a Sunday Roast. The food was excellent, freshly prepared and plenty of it. I had the beef which is more like a steak on your plate and tried the pork aswell which somebody else had. Great value for money and no 'Aunt Bessie's' here.
Milliesmucker - 30 Jul 2008 11:07
Nice Pub, friendly service and nice food.
sometimes cold on winters evening.
Shame the Beer is tad expensive though
beermonster1984 - 21 Apr 2008 21:53
I think the London Pride they are being serving up at the moment is in perfect condition and you will be hard pushed to find it better anywhere else, Im not keen on the current guest ale but that will change.

I currently eat here a couple of times a month bringing my clients for a homely cooked meal with a good and friendly atmosphere. No complaints so far

The price increases which will inevitable carry on going up (inflation, taxation & industry red tape). Every pub and Social club I use has increased prices in the last month.

Where did all that SNOW come from and did you hear the thunder?

goodbeerdrinker - 6 Apr 2008 11:40
This is a great country pub with home cooked food served by friendly members of staff. the beer is good and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. They also have regular live music with some really great bands playing there.
cosmogirl - 29 Mar 2008 15:36
Also in reply to Joeythebeerdog, It seems strange that if this was once one of your favourite pubs you did'nt know that it has always been a managed house and therefore the pricing has never been controlled by the landlords but by the brewery and the pub owner (michael couridge). As for the managers leaving the staff to struggle, utter nonsense, Being a country pub you can never judge what daily trade you will have and 99% of the time staff cope very well. If they become over run you usally find that some of the regulars work there and will step in to help without hesitation. You are always made to feel welcome whether you are a local or a first time visitor.
vinovixon - 25 Mar 2008 16:57
REPLY TO JOEYTHEBEERDOG, THE MANAGEMENT HAVE NO SAY IN THE PRICE OF BEER THATS DOWN TO THE BREWERY AND THE BUDGET,AS A REGULAR I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE BARSTAFF STAFF STRUGGLE AND LETS FACE IT GOOD BAR STAFF SHOULD NOT STRUGGLE, THE MANAGEMENT HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO BRING THIS PUB BACK TO ITS BEST AND ARE AS DEDICATED TODAY AS WHEN THEY TOOK OVER TWO YEARS AGO, THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT, ALL FRESH AND COOKED TO PERFECTION BY THE LANDLADY, SO LETS FACE IT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, NOT FAST FOOD WARMED UP.
largerlout - 22 Mar 2008 11:42
Bitter = 2.90
Joeythebeerdog - 8 Mar 2008 10:31
This used to be one of my favourite watering holes, but as of late the Management seem to have lost interest with it. The bar staff are left to struggle with no help.

Beer has just been put up in price (Cider 3.10 Bitter 1.90) Food is an absolute rip off. It seems they are trying to run a restaurant however they have forgot one minor point The Fox is a Pub and should be priced accordingly.

Joeythebeerdog - 8 Mar 2008 10:25
If you like good food and real ale served well then this is your pub! The land lady is a very good cook and excells at Thai cusine. The HSB did suffer when Fullers took over Gales, but it soon got back where it should be, delish...
Sunday roasts are good as the vegetables are cooked perfecty and a good range including cabbage & red cabbage with the roast Pork (most boring pubs only give you Carrots and Brocolli)!
There is normally a jar of home made pickled onions on the bar, just donate to charity to taste them!
WOOTY - 20 Nov 2007 10:57
Good Beer and Good food, I would recommenced the Sunday dinner and If there is a Thai selection on the menu its a must.
frequent entertainment with a good atmosphere.
goodbeerdrinker - 9 Nov 2007 11:09
I was here for the Fireworks display last night, it was an excellent show and a bargain at only 1 entry!
I am told next year the fireworks display will be even bigger and better, and they will soon start raising funds for it already!
Murry - 5 Nov 2007 10:09
The change of management hasn't been a good one. The beer isn't as good as it was & the food isn't all that either for the price they charge. Shame really as I used to really like this pub.
anonymous - 4 May 2007 12:27
Quite the worst pint of lager I have ever had, and I have had a few.
fiftyfive - 20 Nov 2006 11:01
I didn't like it. It is now a Fullers pub and the beer is not as good as the Gales. Just what have they done to HSB! I regret saying that I won't be returning.
anonymous - 9 Sep 2006 13:51
In response to HantsHasher dated 6 May 2006.
As a regular visiter to this pub and on speaking terms with the new managers, I feel you should be more clear in your facts and be made aware of a few things. Firstly the managers DO NOT set the price for the beers, that comes from the prices set by the brewery. Secondly I know for a fact that your party of people DID NOT order meals, but Basket meals, and we are all aware that these are quick, cheap alternatives for those who do not wish to have a full sit down meal(you get what you pay for comes to mind)! I am also aware that you were informed that the fox was already booked out with a function that evening, but they would squeeze you in with something as the pub you had already asked had let you down with another booking(how grateful)! You have also forgotten to mention that a couple of your people did order off of the usual menu (homemade soup, jacket potatoes, and omelettes), and it seems they were happy! As a local I find it heartbraking that a large group of people turn up on mass, are helped out of a situation, and then go away and give a bad report. My own point of view is that the pub is one of the friendliest around and the new managers will do their best to help anyone. The food is great and the beer is excellent too. Maybe the problem wasn't the pub at all!!
oftenin - 17 May 2006 21:19
The new managers seem to be on a mission to make a pile of cash - judging by the way they ripped off a group of us (25) who visited this Thursday. 2.80 for a pint of bitter and 6 for a pathetic portion of cheap sausages and a few chips! I don't mind paying 6 for a meal, but not for something smaller than a kiddies portion and of such poor quality. When will pubs realise that cheap, deep-fried sausages are really not for serving in a restaurant? Sorry, but I feel this pub will become less popular as time goes on - unless something radical happens to the perceived value for money.
HantsHasher - 6 May 2006 06:45
fantastic place gorgeous food perect as a restaraunt or pub always go on birthday meals here esp in summer eat outside kids can play on park. also go out for beers and pool there would recommend
anonymous - 13 Apr 2006 01:33
Have the new Managers started yet ?

It might be difficult attracting new managers if they see the comments on this site !

anonymous - 16 Feb 2006 20:40
Will the last person to leave the Fox,PLEASE TURN OFF THE LIGHTS,
I see its all gone tits up again, more managers required, is a shame as the Fox is one of the best pubs around Basingstoke.
Fatgandi - 13 Feb 2006 16:43
yes, mr green and mr courage is the same person.
anonymous - 24 Jan 2006 11:55
Are Mr Green and Mr Courage the same person ?

anonymous - 22 Jan 2006 18:43
whos sarah??? it's LOUISE!
phillip and louise did NOTHING wrong, mr green obviously doesn't understand buisness otherwise he wouldn't let the best thing he has going for him leave, and yes i think that is phil and lou.

so now what? the pub gets given to another willing couple for 6 months, they try their hardest to turn the pub around, then at the end of the 6 months mr green wil come in and ask them to leave???? come on mr green this isn't the way to do business!!
anonymous - 17 Jan 2006 11:36
I'm amazed too, like 'A_local' this is my local somewhere I can just sit and read without being bothered. I came down today to find out that Phil & Louise are being moved on , exactly what happened to Louise & Bill (The SA couple), what the hell is going on with this guy !!,.
Businesses are not only about profit (I know I run one!) they're also about building relationships, much more so important in a market where hospitality is the key to growth. I've got to know Phil & Louise over the last few months and would rather they stayed, never seen any fights over the pool table, but having sponsored their fireworks night, had a phone call taking the piss out of my name, was dealt with v promptly by Phil so believe longer term that they would be excellent for the Fox.
Apparently the excuse is that they've lost 100 gallons of beer!, which equates to 2.5 barrels....yeh right as if anyone who can sneek that through a stocktake !

I understand that this guy just has 3 pubs, but hes f**king around with peoples lives as well !!!...my apologies but rant over...

Really amazed Local
Chris_P - 10 Jan 2006 16:37
I cannot believe that Michael Green (sorry Courage) has done it again......

Phillip & Louise who have been the managers at this pub since August 2005 have just been told to leave as they were not making the pub pay. Does this man seem to forget that they walked into this place on the back of a walk out by most of his regulars after the last fiasco that he pulled. If he would just let them get on with it and stop changing his management, he would see that they were actually on an upward route and all the locals like myself liked them and their family.

So not only has he put them out onto the street, but he has also thrown out the children (such a big man!!!). This always seems to happen when he actually gets somebody in who knows exactly what they are doing, unlike Mr Burns, sorry Mr Green, sorry Mr Courage, who has never actually run a pub in his life and from what I can gather had 9(nine) pubs at one time and now only has 3(three), I think that those sort of figures speak for themselves and show that his managers are not the major problem with this pub, the biggest problem is

........... MR COURAGE .........

I rated this pub a 9, but that only stans for when Phillip & Louise were there.
A_Local - 6 Jan 2006 17:28
I really can't see what all these negative comments about this pub are for. I've been drinking there for about 15 years and I have never seen a fight over the pool table or anything else for that matter. This pub is really nice and seems to be getting better since Phil and Louise took over the management a couple of months ago, they care about the pub and it's customers and are always trying to have something going on there. Keep up the good work guys.
greasemonkey - 5 Nov 2005 10:08
i love this pub, the views are amazing and the new people there are really welcoming. keep up the good work
littleangel - 2 Nov 2005 13:34
This isn't a 'local pub for local perople' at all (certainly at the moment!) Its a very nice pub with excellent bitters, large dining room, full of families eating Sunday Lunches, skittle alley, beer garden, sports shown on T.V and pool. The food is good and resonably prices, the beer is well kept,,, but the price is currently a sore point.
Gales brewery have forced extortionate price rises, 30p on a pint of Guinness and arount 20p on every pint of bitter.
Most locals are currently drinking elsewhere in protest, and the Landlords arn't happy about it either.
Hopefully Gales will see sense and bring the prices down a little, then this pub will go back to being a nice Local pub, All welcome.
SMW - 4 Apr 2005 12:12
I believe that Gales HSB is served down here
Alexh1982 - 26 Mar 2005 08:16
Their is a bunch of 25 to 40 year olds that act like they are 18 starting fights and argueing over pool games I would suggest that no-one bothers going to this pub as it is a local pub only for local people. (How very sad)
Robert Dunnington - 14 Jan 2005 08:47
