This is a top pub and if there were more like this then there would be more pubs staying open. A welcoming and attentive landlord, great staff, excellent beers - Arkell on pump and a comprehensive food menu - both bar food and restaurant.
Please note the landlady can be a little snippy particularly after a drink !

I use this pub all the time. Its always busy, a good sign when so many pubs are closing or changing hands every 5minutes. Great atmosphere, lovely friendly staff some of whom seem to have been there for years (another good sign). The food is brill. Yes, I agree with a previous review that the menu is extensive but I haven't had a bad meal there yet and neither have any of my friends. We are on our lunch breaks and no we dont have time wait for a cottage pie or the like to be cooked from scratch and I dont know any pub that does. The food is good, homemade and excellent value for money. Parking is a nightmare as it is down a narrow road and the carpark is small but we've tried many other places but nowhere compares;

I've always liked this pub and it is a rare outlet (in this part of Berkshireat least) for Arkells beers. We have had Sunday lunch here which was fine but I take the point made by the previous reporter about the menu.
I haven't been in for a while but if it's the same landlord as before then he is a Chelsea supporter and there was some footie memorablia around the bar walls (and the TV was showing Sunday afternoon live matches). Very limited car parking and the narrow lane tends to get blocked-up pretty quickly. The pub is dead handy for Ascot races and is always heaving during their race festivals. I need to pay another visit soon and hopefully nothing will have changed!

Visited here for lunch and another mid walk refresher. Arkell's beer very acceptable - I has Kingsdown which slipped down a treat. Place was very busy and looks much bigger on the inside that it does from the outside.
A bit of a shock when we asked about food. We were presented with a Bar Menu, a Restaurant Menu and directed to a large blackboard covered in "specials". There must have been over 50 different meals available.
And when you see that much choice you know that all this stuff is pre-prepared and held in a fridge or freezer. There's no way you can cook this many dishes from scratch. I'd ordered Cottage Pie and I knew just what would turn up - a pie in an individual dish, slightly burnt around the edges, scaldingly hot in the middle with some bullet peas and a scattering of uniform chips. And that's exactly what I got.
Don't get me wrong - The DoE is a pleasant pub and I would happily go back again. I think it might benefit from a smaller menu though.

Have eaten here many times and the food is always fantastic: plentiful (sometimes a bit too plentiful), well presented and always HOT!! Reasonably priced too. One of my favourite 'eating pubs' - would highly recommend.

Visited pub on a friday evening with wife and two guests. Food freshly cooked - everyone enjoyedvery much their choice of food. Drinks also very good.

Excellent country pub. Nick and Annie give a friendly welcome to all. Good range of Arkell's beers (usually 4), usually in good condition. Good food, and a pub for everyone. Parking can be fun, though!

Set back from the main road in a quiet and pleasant side road, this pub looks just the part, having a fine frontage and outside seating, plus an open-aspect garden to the side and rear with 10 or more bench-seat tables. The inside also has plenty of room and has a eating area, though we were not there to eat. This is an Arkells pub (rare in the south east) and the Arkells beers were rather good on both recent visits: 2B, 3B and Kingsdown all being kept and presented well. 8 out of 10.

Good pub with some decent real ales and good home cooked food at reasonable prices.
