please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

If your out at the weekend and find yourself after a lively bar until the very small of hours of the following day then this is the place, however its the kind of place that you'd probably not want to visit in daylight hours.

Reasonably priced for the area however the vodka tastes suspiciously watered down; honestly could not taste it at all! Usually a fun time, glitter ball et al.

pub dirty, wine served a la Ryanair, wine glass filthy. really gone down hill since my last visit 4 years ago

After a long trek around the area, all I wanted was a decent pint of cask - not to be had, not even Smooth! Had to settle for a half of Guinness, served by a barmaid who was more interested in her mates than new customers. Bohemian/run-down is fine, if offer and service are OK. This place offers neither, though it might be fine for insurance clerks.

'RIPPER' and 'BONZA' were two of the things Rhenny couldn't stop saying when we went on a night out at this commonly misunderstood establishment. From the broken (bar) stools to blacked-out windows and half constructed DJ booth in the corner this pub has it all - forget the Sterling, the Castle is now the pub of choice to relax and unwind for this insurance worker after a hard day at Lloyds. 10/10, A* - pour me another Fosters with a pint of pork scratchings. Ripper.

The location of this East End pub is less than salubrious, despite the City not being too far away. However despite this, it does not lack character. This is a real spit and sawdust type of place with a bohemian feel. The bare floorboards, black painted walls, broken windows, wooden vehicles above the bar and glitterball somehow combine to create a fairly pleasant drinking environment. Despite the black walls, the interior still manages to be bright and airy, due to number of windows and the pub's position on an intersection. Sky News was being shown on the TV. Advertisements for toasties at 2 each were scattered liberally and I noticed sweets being sold from a couple of containers behind the bar. Unfortunately there are no real ales. Drinks choice is limited to continental lagers, Caffreys, Guinness, Strongbow and Magners. I didn't venture into the back room which is decorated in a red colour.

Disgusting cheap beer in a condemned building held together by string. What was once a decent Courage pub is now an absolute dive. There are a lot of much better pubs in the area to try!

This is the sort of pub where anyone will fit in. It has comfy sofas and shows all the big games on big screens. They have DJ's at the weekends and it gets rammed. Not a lot on offer for real ale fans though.

Whilst this pub has many good points, I consider that the lack of any drinkable beer is a bit of a downside. The current score here of 7.7/10 is a bit of a mystery when you consider that this web-site is primarily concerned with BEER, but I suppose that if you like cheap lager, then this is the place for you. As Cathy McGowan used to say, Oi'll give it foive. Or was it Janice Nicholls.

Went here on Monday lunchtime. Yes this place has character (love the wooden toys hanging from the ceiling) but thats where it ends. Unless character to you is no draft ale, wonkey tables and ripped seats. Yes it's different from the some of the characterless pubs in the city but there are far better ones within walking distance. If you like your music heavy then this is the place. Felt like a bikers pub.

No crisps or food for those interested in that sort of thing. Eating is cheating after all. Nice blonde barmaid.

Everything a pub should be, I only wish it was like this when I lived round the corner. Worth crossing town for, and open through the night at weekends (unless we were lucky). Look past the tatty fixtures and fittings, though they're part of its charm.

Awesome pub! I love this place; it has great bar staff and one of the friendliest atmosphere's you'll find in London. The drinks are cheap as chips too!

great pub (although the redecoration/mural is off-putting), very cute friendly cat (how many city pubs can boast that), a genuine east end atmosphere and fantastic prices.

With friendly barstaff, a nice mixture of people from all walks of life, open fire and resident cat, you could while away many a happy and relaxing hour in this unpretensious pub - a real anti-dote to some of the characterless 'trendy' boozers that are popping up all around this area - you can sense that the place has had a rich and colourful history. In many senses the pub has an air of being frozen in time - even with a recent refurbishment of comfy sofas and a slightly naff (but charming!) trompe l'oeil of a castle interior and landscape views. I recommend climbing up the stairs to see the room with the pool tables as it uncannily captures the atmosphere of a strange youth hostel in the middle of nowhere! Prices are reasonable with lots of deals on during the week.

Decent local boozer. Darts board, 3 pool tables, plasma screen, never too busy, two real ales (Ridleys IPA and Old Bob) and only a short stagger from my home.. (ok only of benefit to me and few others but there you go)
