Visited here when Chelsea were on Sky yesterday! I found the pub to quite pleasant and in a fairly nice village-like area. Youngs was the only beer available, despite there being 4 handpulls in the main bar. The Directors clip was turned round. Addlestones is the cider of choice. The pub is formed of 2 interconnected bars with a passageway between the two. There is also a suntrap patio area at the side. Pot plants around the walls of the one bar created a pleasant drinking environment. The football on the TV was not too disturbing. What was more disturbing was the drug dealing in the gents and the Chinese DVD seller walking around the pub unchallenged. I also hate it when bar staff expect you to hand out a note without telling you the price of the drink. I don't expect to have to ask what the price is. Probably a 5/10 score for this.

First things first - every time I have been in here I have found that there has been no intimidation whatsoever and the landlord is actually quite welcoming. Yes it's not in the worlds most sulubrious area and the locals language can sometimes be choice but there are no threatening looks or glares and I have only been in here half a dozen times so I'm not a local myself. Just to point out that in each of those times the beer was excellent and if you like sport on the box you wont be dissapointed. The recent refit has done the place a favour, especially in the lounge bar, and anywhere that stocks copies of London Drinker will always get a plus point in my point of view. Possibly wont be visiting when Chelsea are on Sky though!!!

Yipes - I felt a definite air of menace in this place (and it was only 4pm). Very much for locals only, unless you enjoy being in pubs where drunks shout at each other across the room and men with shaven heads and sovereign rings give outsiders dirty looks. Beer was standard Young's offering.

The Angel has been nicely refurbed. New carpets and furniture. Outside area also looks nice too. The look of a traditional pub has been retained. But, oh dear, the clientele are just as rough as ever. Too loud and too much swearing... the shuffling under belly of a wretched council estate. Beer nothing special. We left after half a pint.

Quite frankly a horrible experience. I've drunk in many pubs over the years in the UK and abroad and hate that this is my local. Unfriendly, unclean, unattractive - thank God this has been scheduled for a refurb (although God knows what Youngs will do to it). Ignore the expensive Telegraph, get down the hill into Putney to the Bricklayers or the Cat's Back.

A real pub, decent Youngs, and extremely busy early evening. Not what I expected of Roehampton High Street having never visited before - Streatham felt safer !
|
Potentially good but as two reviews earlier pointed out - rough joint. Probably ok in the day when not many people are there.

I left this area in 1981,as the saying goes "you don't what you've got till it's gone. The Angel is a cast iron reason to visit the area. with great beer, good atmosphere, friendly staff and good food.

A museum piece. There are pubs like this featuring in episodes of the Sweeney. My gilrfriend wandered in here on her own once and seriously ordered a Kir Royale. Ha ha ha ha ha

I used to work here.
Even in the late 90s, the public bar was 75% pond scum. The other 25% were great. The beer was always average. The "saloon" bar was a little more civilised but still crap.
The worst of British.

Deffinately not worth a visit.
If youre not a local, and dont know anyone else in the pub then you are not made to feel at all welcome.
The landlord has done little to the pub. He employs a bar manager who snarls behind the bar.
The pub is seedy and the drinkers in it seedier.
its one of the few pubs left in Roehampton, all the others have been closed by having their licences removed. Unfortunately this have driven the Roehampton rough further into Putney, bringing the tone of certain pubs down. If this pubs survives up to the end of the year, I will be surprised.

I think this pub is an absolute dump and should be closed down. The customers are rough and out of order and the landlord has done nothing to improve it. I went in once and never again, i was disguted by what i saw and heard! Its a pity as it could be a great pub if the owner actually cared!

a bit of a dump, the landlord is a bit of a miserable c**t that thinks eating a pizza without putting his teeth in propped up against the bar is a good thing (hes about 90), it will probally shut down by the end of the year.

As an ex-local, I used to frequent this pub a lot, as does my old man to this day. Love the pub, bit of an overspill from the recently-condemned Kings Head, but still - very nice pub. Great for watching football or rugby, attracts a fiercely loyal local's crowd.

Nice little pub with the usual Wells-and-Young's range. Frequented by locals who have increasingly fewer places to go around here - the wine shop opposite used to be a pub, and the Maltese Cat has gone, flats built in its place. Had a good off-the-wall conversation with two local good ol' boys here and then went back along Roehampton Lane, past the shuttered-up shell of the Montague Arms. The BITE listing gives seven pubs in Roehampton, four of which have now closed down. Young's Ordinary seems to be getting back to its old self again, after the initial phase from Bedford when it was too damned sweet! It went down very nicely in the Angel though. As Hilaire Belloc wrote, as long ago as 1911, "When you have lost your inns, then drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England."

Nothing really to add to my previous comment - why has no one else commented on this pub over the last 12 months ?
It's well worth seeking out - it's on a bus route, so there's no excuse for not going there

Well, it looks like I've got the honour of being the first to post a comment on this particular pub ( date of visit - Sunday, 19 June ) It's a fine traditional unchanged 2 bar Youngs pub. Mainly used by locals, but there is a warm and friendly atmosphere. In the saloon bar, there is a slightly raised seating area up a couple of steps, where the traditional Sunday lunch - available till 2.45 pm - was proving popular ( only 4.50 ). Also does food midweek ( lunch times and evenings till 9.30 except Saturday ). Rather surprisingly, the pub's licence apparently does not allow children, even in the raised area. There is an outdoor drinking area, but being the hottest day of the year so far, most customers were seeking refuge inside. Don't let the address put you off - this is not a typical High Street pub. It is situated about 15 minutes walk along the side of Putney Heath from The Green Man and is also on several bus routes ( 493 and 170 ). In conclusion, an enjoyable visit, it's well worth seeking out - I hope to go back, preferably sooner rather than later.
