No longer trading - due to major fire, last August.

Currently on the market - as 'redevelopment opportunity'.

This pub is situated a mile or so out of Wendover and a similar distance from the village of Weston Turville both of which have a choice of drinking establishments and there are only a few houses in the immediate area so effectively no local trade. It was having to cater for the dining trade to exist but has closed on more than one occasion. Although I haven't been in there much in recent times I drive past quite often and yesterday I noticed that there had been a serious fire leaving only the outer shell standing. It will need a complete rebuild and therefore I suspect unlikely to reopen as a pub. It's a shame as it was actually quite a nice place but always struggled to attract sufficient clientele despite a succession of different proprietors.

over priced and very poor, must agree with indiekids comments, trying hard to be somthing it is not!!!!

Have given this pub the benefit of the doubt again and again but it still comes up short. Been for 4 meals here now and, to be honest, I won't give it anymore chances. Dreadful service from disinterested teenage lad the last. He spent ages chatting with his mates and ignoring customers. Brought our food out with no cutlery -
Politely asked him for some knives and forks and he never came back!

Food isn't great. Time before last the burger was cold and raw. sunday roast was stringy beef meat and table next to us complained as veg was so hard they couldn't get a fork into it.
Has had a big makeover and is trying to present itself as a fancy gastropub but it's really not even close to being that. I really wouldn't bother again.

PUB IS NOW CALLED - 'VILLAGE GATE'

outside, the building is beuatifull, although it suffers from a busy road being directly in front of it. if you are able to get the outside seating thats tucked away out of view of the road then its nice, otherwise... your view is a main road.

inside, this place is clearly trying to be as upmarket as possible. its all very modern and bright, with very trendy paint scheme and fittings. not usually what i like in a pub, but they do seem to have gotten this trendy feel right.

ales and beers were suprisingly very good, and some interesting varities too.

all in all, if i feel the need to go somewhere a bit fancy pants, then this is where i'd choose... but that doesnt happen often.

As mentioned below: now called THE VILLAGE GATE. Not been here for a couple of years owing to it's nowhere position between Wendover and Weston Turville. Very pleasant pub to be in, refurbished very well. Certaintly a gastro but plenty of space to drink in & on this Wednesday most of the pub to drink in. 3 ales: Black Sheep, London Pride & GK IPA. I tried the Black Sheep which was fine. Worth keeping an eye on the beers as they were often poor under previous mangement.

My experience here was far from satisfactory, had a pint of Old Hooky, either the lines hadn't been cleaned or aylesbury united had been playing football in the cellar with the barrel.

Then onto the food I had the plaice and was promised it was fresh, however I went on a monday and as far as I know fish markets don't open till tuesday mornings, It certainly didn't taste fresh but perhaps that's because they had a quiet weekend as I was in there on the saturday and there was only 4 others in the entire pub!!

The service or lack of, perhaps its just me but my pet hate is being served beer with the barman holding the glass from its rim, I found the chap who served me Abrubt and as if his mind was elsewhere, Perhaps he wanted to be elswhere as all I could here him talking about was swansea and his pregnant girlfriend.

I certainly won't be going back in the near future which is a shame as I hate all the chain pubs/restaurants and was really hoping this would be an independant eatery I could rely on to take my friends family and business colleagues.

Popped in a few weeks back to view the refurb and sample a beer. Refurb okay, beer (London Pride) very average (being kind) and very expensive at 3.40 a pint. The Pride in the Five Bells in Weston Turville, at 2.95, is better as is the Pride in the Bull at Stoke Mandeville, 3.10. Didn't have any food, but looking at the menu it was expensive. Won't be going back.
Mike_McCabe - 22 Jun 2011 13:06
beer expensive and the food is average but expensive, would do better if it catered for drinkers more , very clean and tidy since the refurb though

This pub is now called The Village Gate - can the lovely people at Beerintheevening change it??

Great find (I read about it in The Times last Saturday) - really friendly staff, cosy wood burning stove, 3 well kept ales (The Old Hooky was to die for!) and simple, delicious food. Ok it's not "cheap", but it's certainly not expensive, my HUGE fish & chips was jut over a tenner.

Definitely one to visit - I will be back

Same beers as previously noted (Old Hooky, Spitfire & Black Sheep).....but NO local Chiltern Brewery beer and its only a mile away.
Whats happened to the original promise to vary the beers every few weeks ??

Anyway,
Beer ok but not great (not bad however)
Price 3.20 a pint............somewhat surprised by this price level I have to say.
Doubtful its worth making the journey
BUT an absolute full pint served - full marks for that.
Seemed very bouyant........big difference from MoG days

It's a great pub again, just like it used to be several years ago. Good atmosphere. Can't explain why its got back on its feet again, but it is busy.
LadyLiz - 8 Sep 2010 20:43
Has re-opened as "The Village Gate"
Good reports received, Old Hooky, Spitfire, Black Sheep
Only problem is that its been so busy !!!
pick_e_tippler - 21 Aug 2010 05:59
Good news, sign outside says reopening in two weeks under the name "The Village Gate"
LadyLiz - 26 Jul 2010 20:23
It appears to have shut down again. No lights on 8pm Sat. What a great shame, it's a nice pub.
LadyLiz - 28 Feb 2010 08:52
I drink in the Marquis quite often. It is a good pub, service is excellent and the beer is well kept. The Old Hooky is great! The food is pretty good value for money and it is all homemade!
lcst87 - 13 Dec 2009 23:59
Popped in here recently and was pleasantly surprised. Beer excellent although pub was empty. Staff seemed glad of someone to talk to! Worth a visit if you're wife's in Wyevale opposite!
Mr_FRISKY - 8 Nov 2009 23:33
Very good but quite expensive beer
pgjp - 18 Sep 2009 11:28
Has reopened and on friends recommendation stopped by for a pint.
Old Hooky and Old Speckled Hen tried.
Both good - Very creamy pints - Co2 or creamflow system used - but very pleasant reminded my of a Northern / Yorkshire pint.
Will try again at some point.
Food menu looked to be OK and good value
Average rating (5) given for now, but could be raised in due course
pick_e_tippler - 22 Aug 2009 14:28
Sadly this pub has closed down again. There is a notice on the entrance door saying "Closed until further notice". Great Shame.
LadyLiz - 24 Mar 2009 09:11
Try the Oak in Aston Clinton - a good Fullers pub.
Well kept beer, good bar snacks and larger menu.
Good garden for the summer.
Family friendly and non-hostile locals
pick_e_tippler - 10 Feb 2009 09:43
The party on that evening mentioned were celebrating a birthday and were no trouble at all in the other Wendover pubs they visited.
I am thinking maybe a car parking charge would keep your undesirables out, perhaps?
gobion_osei - 26 Jan 2009 14:06
I too agree with the previuos correspondent about the chav/oiks. I was in there too enjoying a good beer.
However in this ridiulous age of political correctness etc. it would be almost impossible to eject these money spending oiks.
Great shame as the new management have made a great effort. Hopefully this is a temporary problem.
Myskolive - 25 Jan 2009 10:41
I took my family here at 6pm this evening.
Somebody has obviously spent a lot of money on this place recently. Its appearance inside and out is immaculate. So we thought we would give it a go for a family meal.

The Barmaid was friendly and helpful and the seating by the roaring wood-burning stove was welcoming.
The menu looked excellent and the Hooky was indeed a good pint. Sadly, we did not get to try the food.

The only other customers at 6pm this Sunday were a group of baseball hat wearing chav-scrotes whose loud vocablary consisted almost entirely of Anglo-Saxon adjectives.

Half way through my pint another four chavistas walk in to much Anglo-Saxon greetings all round. All appeared to have been drinking since dawn. I became aware of learing looks from these types who seemed to act as if this was their 'manor' and we were invaiding it. Clearly not a family atmosphere!

This was evidently not the place to take my family for a meal, so we departed back to civilisation and a good evening elsewhere.

My advice to the management - Get the chavs out and you will get the customers you deserve in. Sincere good luck to you.
pedantnic - 24 Jan 2009 22:42
Good seafood menus though I had pie of the day and very good.
I think the staff and restaurant service could probably be more attentive to a customer but I shall not want to criticise on this alone.
gobion_osei - 10 Dec 2008 17:45
Hooray..........a good pub again! Choice of well kept beers, good menu and competetively priced food.
Good luck to the new management, I hope it becomes a success.
Recommended.

Been using this place off and on over the past 10 years, new management now, three beers on hand pump on my vist, good service clean and tidy good luck to the new managers. plus the food looked good too.
apintofbestplesae - 5 Sep 2008 21:27
Had a pleasant enough sunday dinner here today. 12.95 for two courses - not "cheap", but not unusual for the area. Three ales on when we were in there - IPA, London Pride, Old Hooky. A fourth pump wasn't in use, but it's a shame they haven't got something from The Chiltern Brewery, which is a stone's throw away.

Hooky was in good nick, and it's pleasant inside (we ate in the pub area, not the restaurant. Like many similar places, I'm not sure how well it succeeds as a "pub", but it's a pleasant place to get a meal. Tons of potential, though - and they've made a decent start.
scissorkicks - 31 Aug 2008 21:32
Appears to be open again. "Under New Management" signs outside. Will try to pay a visit this weekend.
scissorkicks - 18 Jul 2008 12:28
Its very sad to see this once lively pub now standing in total darkness, empty car park, no signs or boards outside. Some elightenment would be most welcome.
Myskolive - 26 Jun 2008 22:05
Seems to be shut, or at least is was last Friday when I passed by.
cato - 1 Jun 2008 17:49
I can't quite make out what has happened to this place. It hardly ever appears to be open, last Saturday it was shut despite a sign outside welcoming all to its special menu. This was a brilliant atmospheric pub once, people used to come for miles around to party here and attend functions mainly because it served excellent food and drinks, and had a good customer focused landlord (Tony Lamber)
I think the present owner is serving Greek Food but I'm not sure about that. TREMENDOUS potential! Sadly lacking any encouragement to go there at present.
Myskolive - 1 Jun 2008 13:14
No ale on offer this Friday evening and no delivery until Monday, and they didn't seem too bothered either. Shame, used to be quite a decent place.
2 points for of ease of parking.
mally - 26 Apr 2008 01:03
Saw the sign outside yesterday. Slightly worrying. This was (is?) a very pleasant pub for a summer walk out of Wendover. Also usually had a few interesting ales on - my last visit saw a couple of Hook Norton ales and Banks's Mild.
scissorkicks - 21 Dec 2007 10:21
Apparently this is now turning into a pub / Greek Cypriot restuarant. Watch this space.
strawbitz - 28 Nov 2007 07:34
I agree with Martin on the friendly service & beer quality.Perhaps not the best for miles around but certainly one of them.A local beer would be a good move
Haven't had the food for a year or so but remember a massive portion of cod & chips - very good too.

In summary: plenty of effort going into customer service & beer quality. Deserves support
mally - 18 Apr 2005 23:31
Close by World's End Garden Centre on the A413 Wendover to Aylesbury road
Excellent beer selection and quality, IMHO the best kept ales for miles around.
Excellent food and adventurous menu, very friendly service.
Highly recommended
