Excellent pub - landlord may even buy you a pint if you've walked and not added to his parking headaches! Must have had about 9 bitters on in the 3 days we were there & after much consideration the Loweswater Gold gets the nod. Didn't make it to that Beatrix Potter place mind you

First visit: lovely exterior, and inside not overly tarty, hope they resist any further opening out and gentrification. Good choice of beers and mine was in good condition.

Having attempted too late to book a table, I arrived here as a party of six on Saturday evening and struck lucky with a big enough table in the bar (the better place to be in any case). Five local beers included Tag Lag and Laughing Gravy (also Hawkshead Bitter and Brodies Prime) both in fine condition.
My beef and ale casserole with dumplings was delicious although the chips were more of the small roast potato kind. Interesting cheeses.
A good fire at the far end (which can be too hot to be close to). Overall an excellent and friendly pub.

Pleasant village pub that trades off it's fame as part of the Jemima Puddleduck story, being located 100yds from Beatrix Potter's house. The interior is cosy, with a real fire burning in the bar room and a mixture of flagged and carpeted floors. A more formal restaurant room is behind the bar. Potter-ana abounds, with Peter Rabbits and Puddleducks and pictures from the book around the main bar room. The clock above the outside entrance (see picture)is interesting and a nice touch. Lots of tourists but not the regular sterile food-oriented Lakeland pub with boring beers- a great local selection included Loweswater Gold, Barngates Cracker & Pride of Westmorland, and Hawkshead Bitter and IPA. Resisted temptation of yet another Hawkshead Bitter to try the Loweswater Gold, a light beers that was excellent and very quaffable. Food was being served and played a role that didn't overshadow the drinks operation- a good balance. Had a bowl of soup too, very nice and warming on a rotten day. Service friendly and professional. Really liked it here, would return.

5 excellent local cask ales. Good (restaurant style) food too.
Well worth a visit!

Really comfortable bar. 5 beers on tap when I visited, ones I sampled were spot on. Food really good and well priced.

Great country pub. Nice atmosphere. Friendly bar staff - great banter. Food was good.

I went to this pub late last year and forgot to post a comment sorry, absolutely fabulous, so so so quaint and unspoilt - had a pint and a lovely apple pie and custard and fell asleep in front of a roaring fire.

How good is this pub now? Compared to the last time I was in which over 2 years ago the transormation is immense, 5 local real ales on in crackin condition, non smoking, local fresh food and clean, pet and child friendly, what more could you ask for? well done to the management

Now under new and friendlier management. The removal of the photographs and a slight rearrangement of the furniture makes things seem a bit brighter. There were four beers on this weekend: two Hawkshead, a Derwent Brewery beer and a Barngates beer in good condition. The food has changed and Id say was a bit expensive for what it is, even for the Lakes. (The baked mushroom starter, for example, was very disappointing: small and single, little sign of the filling and hardly baked.) But worth a try.

No-one's mentioned the accommodation, rooms are small but comfortable with Beatrix theme. Good value too by Lakeland standards.Beer is good and varied, and the food is certainly worth a try. Only problem is that there's only one other pub within walking distance, so it's not on a crawl route.

some of the best food for miles around. and beers

Whlst I generally agree with Nathan's warm comments (including the reference to pies) the answer to his final question would too often have been a slightly less begrudging welcome.

A very friendly, small country pub. Owned by the National Trust and next door to Beatrix Potter's farmhouse at Hilltop.
Good beer, usually including local brews from the Barngates and Hawkshead micro breweries. Good, hearty pub food (I especially recommend the pies) and an open fire in winter.
What more could you want after a day on the fells?
