Still closed. The building is now part of a hotel. Shame - When it was open it was my favourite pub in Barking

What a crying shame. Moved away from the area some years ago, but this was one of my favourite places for a proper pint and occasional entertainment. What a busy place it used to be it should have been capable of staying in business. The drinkers in the area have probably dwindled owing to oldies dying out religious issues with incomers.

Ishould add that this Pub should have a plaque to record the History that many of the groups that made it World wide played there
This Pub in the sixties had well know groups playing there like Chris Farlow,The Who,Long John Baldrey, The Downliner Set .Zoot Money and many more. The Landlord at the time was a guy called Walley. Every tuesday the bands that made the sixties music scene would play with people all over London attending

Still closed. The white busts on the outside of the building are still there though.

Very sad to hear this has closed, it was our local when we lived in south Ilford, the best pub for miles around.
Sorry to hear it has closed.Have fond memories of it in the sixtees.Never an over busy pub,but had a regular local following.
I agree with jockthenoo, the clientele just is not there anymore. oldandmild

After 37 years of drinking Young's Special in this great pub its closure almost makes me want to become teetotal. Congratulations Wells and Young's.
Another good pub bites the dust. I fear that more and more of these old establishments will disappear due to government policies and more significantly the potential clientele (or lack of) in the pubs locale. God bless "The Brittania" and all who drunk in her!
Sad to see this fine pub closing. Went there first in 1976, taken by a good friend who wanted me to try Young's bitter. The first taste made me wince but after that I got the hang of it, and stayed all evening and consumed several more. Part of my early drinking history.
Loved the pub. A real gem. If you want to visit go very soon as it will close mid October 2009 for good! OUCH!!
Excellent old-fashioned proper run Young's house (Young's bitter always in good nick -no pride though BarkingHammer!) Enjoyable, friendly quiz night once a month on a Thursday night.
in my opinion, this is one of the best pubs in England. Rita, the landlady is a proper cockney diamond with a heart of gold. They serve a mixture of lager and bitter, amongst them carlsberg, fosters, pride and guiness. Good social atmosphere mainly on weekends. triffic food served all week round and not too far from the station. 10 outa 10

Best pub in Barking and the Youngs beer is excellent place is clean and tidy and food is good forget the rest.
Visited this pub on many occasions over the years. Great Youngs beers. Family run, friendly staff. Its a shame that the locals are not drinkers! otherwise this little gem would be a lot busier. Best in Barking!
Owing to the merger (takeover?) of Youngs and/by Wells, Wells beers are now served here. I think this is the best pub in Barking
Haven't been for a while as no longer live in the area, but a wonderful haven - friendly, clean, usually lots of seats, good Youngs beer.

This is a most excellent pub and the beer is always good. Comfortable old style back street pub with three bars!! The licensee has been nhere for a long time and allows no anti-social individuals. Expect good food and good service here, it is a family pub with a great reputation. It certainly deserves the CAMRA Pub of the Year certificates. Rita and John deserve a pat on the back for their hard work
Excellent beer and regularly wins CAMRA pub of the year for the area. haven't seen it crowded for years, but well worth a visit.
Well worth the five minute walk from the town centre.
A Young's house, with loyal regulars, many of whom would pass several other Barking pubs to come to this one. It's a pity in a way that it's a little outside the town centre and off the main road.
