Woolpack, St Georgesback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Tried this pub again after a long absence. Surroundings and service are ok, but still don't see what they are trying to acheive here. Our table presented 3 x carvery and 1 x pork and stilton pie. At 7-95 for the carvery i expect to get freshly roasted meats not some day befores reheated stuff. The veg combination was neither here nor there. The potatoes roast off the carvery were like rubber and the new pots that came with the pie bland and tasteless. The pie itself had no taste of/or hint of stilton and the 4 meagre pieces of pork that lay within were a nonsense. The quality for the prices was dire. There are better offerings around and this is not one of them.................

Very large, multi-roomed pub just a couple of minutes drive from J21 of the M5. It's got a couple of bars (the "lounge bar" and "village bar") in one section of the pub, and a seperate wing with a carvery area and another bar. I've read about it a few times in Camra publications, but was slightly dissapointed. It's difficult to put my finger on, but something just doesn't quite stack up. It's essentially a community estate pub, but seems as though it's trying to be a traditional country inn. The building itself may be very old, but the decor of the pub seems to be more recent. The car park was very busy early on a recent Tuesday visit, but the pub itself didn't seem to be. Perhaps everyone was in the carvery, we didn't try that bit. A few of the clientelle seemed to be wearing baseball hats, but the pub's in Weston so perhaps that's to be expected. :-) The food was pretty average, nothing really wrong with it (except perhaps the mash which was somewhat stodgy) but nothing particularly right with it either. Having said that, the menu was extensive and reasonably priced, so I suppose you get what you pay for. Staff were friendly enough, but it would have been nice if they'd cleared our plates away when we'd finished eating instead of just walking past several times empty handed. Beer choice was dominated by Butcome, with their bitter, Gold and IPA on tap. Also London Pride and John Smith's (if you count that as a beer). As would be expected, the rather splendid Ashton Press cider was also on tap. In summary, worth popping in if you're nearby and want some basic pub grun, but don't bother going out your way. Other pubs in the Butcombe estate are much better.

I tried this pub quite a while ago and made several visits with the familly over the past 12 mths.We went for the carvery in the main, but have to say wasn't a come back soon experience. If i remember right i was charged 1-90 for my sisters J20,so all though i am writing this very belated i trust that this was an error, but have to mention the barmaid did assure me it was correct.Usual pub fayre on the menu.I wonder if there have been enormous improvements.

Great pub with superb food to go alongside traditional beers, owned by a brewery and it shows as it what a pub should be like.

Nothing but good local reports since It's recent new owners. Needless to say Butcombe's own beers are prominent and were served very well. We had a light lunchtime bite which was freshly made and good value. They are just finishing a large stand alone carvery area. Glad to see they have gone down this route rather than demosishing the original pub interior.

A good stopping off point when travelling back up the M5, a very comfortable pub and the Butcombe beers were in good condition, didnt have a meal but menu was well priced and food looked good, not into the large glass window in the gents loo though prefer a bit more privacy lol. A superb pub

Nice, flag floored Somerset pub, close enough to J21 of the M5 nto make it a much better choice for a journey break than any Motorway Service. Small outdoor drinking area at front made for an excellent summer lunchtime visit. Excellent guest ales and friendly staff.
