Very handsome building though the setting is a bit grotty near to Vic Centre. Traditional pub interior - nothing fancy/new but comfortable. Friendly staff, TV screens showing some sports thing. There wasn't a huge choice of ale when I went in - though they did have Harvest Pale. However, they were serving real ciders and perries from what looked like polypins - great stuff!

This place is just round the corner and therefore handy for Victoria Bus Station. In here last Saturday early afternoon and a good crowd of about 30 others present. 3 plasma screens and a large roll down are showing the cricket England v India. Some low piped music is playing. They have 8 hand pulls 7 for ale and 1 for cider. I had a very nice pint of Castle Rock Harvest Pale for £2.85. So nice I had time to quaff down another.

Great City centre pub with good choice of well kept Ales. Cheap good quality Sunday roasts. Occasional Beer Festivals and has made it into 2012 Good Beer Guide for 1st time.
|
Usual kind of town pub in my opinion. Nothing too fancy or basic. Staff and ale both okay.

Looks awesome from the outside, and it used to put on some good gigs, but it's pretty mediocre to be honest. Food and beer is alright. Only really worth visiting as part of a Mansfield Road pub crawl.

The Rose is improving all the time, They even had Old Peculier on last week and are talking about increasing their choice of Malt whiskies. The monday night quiz is great fun and even though some of the regulars do seem a bit strange this only adds to the appeal. In my opinion this is what a traditional corner pub should be,

Seven of us found this to be a good clean place that was but a bit soulless.
The beer was good and I agree with the previous reviewer that it should be on a lads night out pub crawl

Simon the Landlord has turned this place around and is now a must on the Mansfield road pub crawl. Good ale and good service.

Almost a year on from the last review, it seems that the new management has been very successful in turning this pub around. It is clean and comfortable and there didnt seem to be any of Nottingham low life on the premises when I called in recently.
There was a good selection of real ales, including one of my favourites, St Austell Tribute. Having sampled the real thing after a brewery tour, I have a yardstick to measure other outlets by. It wasnt perfect, but it wasnt bad. 7/10 is my rating for the beer and the pub as a whole.
I also have to agree (being a fairly recently reformed smoker myself) that the nicotine addicts on the pavement outside are rather off putting

Let there be light, new management, beer, stocked fridges, clean environment, and yes the optional extras refered to in a previous comment have now been replaced, I refer of course to light bulbs, as a result this pub is much improved, with great friendly staff, and I must take slight exeption to a previous comment that "this pub attracts the dregs of society", I have never found that to be the case, however with all drinking establishments there can be the odd off day. All in all it still retains the feel of a traditional pub, slight shame that people have to stand outside the front to have a ciggarete, which I suppose may be slighty off putting to passing trade.

The landlord has at last come to his senses and cleared off.
Who knows if this place will ever reopen.

I fear that andrew_bulwell has possibly lost his mind; you could only consider this to be "what a pub should be" if you'd never visited another one in your life.
Having said that, this place isn't quite as bad as some comments below make out, although it is close. The main problem is the sinful clientele it seems to attract; the atmosphere is creepy at best, dangerous at worst. The beer is average and overpriced, but strangely the staff are actually very nice.
The one redeeming feature is the upstairs function room, which hosts excellent, cheap and frequent gigs from local, national and international bands of all varieties. If you just want a drink, though, go over the road to the Peacock.

This Pub certainly attracts some of the dregs of society. Marginal improvement in the evening but a place to be avoided.
|
This pub is a masterclass in how to turn a once decent pub into a smelly, dirty tip.
Half the pumps are off, the heating doesn't work and the landlord seems to think that working lightbulbs are an optional extra.
Avoid until there is new management.

Expensive drinks, but nice roomy pub, good atmousphere and friendly staff!
Go when there's a live music night on for a great evening :)

A relaxing, unpretentious, traditional pub, with decent staff and customers. Not too much noise, the tables are the right size, and there are enough of them. In my opinion this might be the best pub in Nottingham. The real ales have always been well kept since I have been going there over the last three years (and there are plenty of pubs in the City where this is not the case). Their usual ones are Bombadier and Abbot which are not my favourites because I prefer beers with a bit lower strength. However, I still keep going to this pub because it is what a pub should be.
|
It's close to Victoria Centre and you can sit down while you drink and they have some beer and I never want to go there again even though I think it looks pretty from the outside and I'm sure tourists stop in there and never want to go there again either and maybe never want to go to another pub as long as they live because they've been to this one because they're afraid all pubs will be like this.

Awful. Dirty. Smelly. Looks interesting from the outside. Possibly Nottingham's most decorative toilet.
|
Great - always has the rocket-fuel that is Broadside on offer except when it's run out?!! They serve til midnight every night and even have an upstairs function room.
