Used to come here a lot about 20 yrs ago and considered it the best pub in Southampton. Then it went through a rough patch with frequent changes of landlord and poor beer quality so I stopped going. Now happy to report that it seems to be back on form and my excellent pint of Entire Stout was good value at £3.40. Back where it belongs as one of Soton's finest.

The Waterloo Arms was the third stop of our Southampton crawl (the second stop, the Key & Anchor) is not listed on here). The Waterloo is a Hopback pub. This is possibly only the second Hopback pub I have visited, having previously been to the Sultan in London. This one felt similar in character. It's fairly cosy inside and many were enjoying Sunday lunches. The ale range was mostly Hopback - Crop Circle, Red Amber, Winter Lightning, Summer Lightning, Entire Stout & GFB. Other ales were Downton New Forest Ale, Daleside Stout & Oldershaw Old Boy. One of a few decent pubs in the area.

New managers at this pub!
|
Entire stout is back on
|
another manager sacked, a pity because this one was good
|
No longer has Entire Stout on draught - shame.

Clean pub with top quality beers bot Hop Back and Guest Beers. New Landlord - enthuiastic and ready to listen to cutomer vews. I'm not a local but will return when possible.

Another wonderful pub in Southampton, a decent community spirit and nice locals frequent the pub, Lisa the barmaid was excellent and clearly enjoyed her job. The Hop Back beers were on top form, a lovely conservatory and a tidy garden area with gravel and a few benches. Inside the pub is very clean Indeed. The Wellington is four minutes walk away and probably a similar distance to the Key and Anchor, probably one of the best three pubs so close together anywhere. 10/10, no other score would do.

New licensee has really turned this pub around. Great range of well kept beer.

Possibly the best value pub in Southampton (Wetherspoons don't count). All the hopback beers including the excellent Entire Stout plus guests (Cimera IPA on this visit). Highly recommended.
|
Still a good value all round pleasant pub. all the Hopback range plus Ringwood Old Thumper (Why?) and a guest.

Used to come here a lot for the Tuesday quiz, but stopped many years ago when Jan left. Popped in for the first time in ages and was very impressed. Very welcoming landlady and beer excellent as ever, especially the superb Entire Stout and only 2.55 a pint. Really can't fault this place. 10/10

Dropped in Friday (30th April) for the beer festival. Excellent range of beers all in good condition. Good to see the pub itself is back to something like its best as well.
|
Things have changed! The new landlady and landlord have brought the pub back to being a friendly, welcoming local. A good range of Hop Back and guest beers makes this well worth a revisit if you have been disappointed in the past.

The Waterloo was the last pub visited after the game and had a pint of Brains Red I think which was excellent and one other which was also top notch again plenty of Saints fans in the pub but no animosity towards the two of us wearing Colchester shirts. Three excellent pubs visited on our trip and well worth any away fan going to shame we didnt get to see why the local CAMRA have taken the previously excellent South Western Arms out of the guide. 7/10

I thought this was a very pleasant pub with an excellent largely Hop Back ale selection but also encompassing guests from Brains and Ringwood breweries. Prices started at as little as 2.25 for a pint of GFB, and although it was a friday afternoon the pub was moderately busy. I'd certainly make the effort to return and would include this in a mini-crawl with the Wellington Arms.

I agree with RJDM, this pub has lost its way, earlier on in the year a young couple had it who really did well, Hopback couldnt keep them and now we are on our second set of managers who are just out of their depth. Hopback, What have you done?

Has undergone too many changes to maintain it's position as the best real ale outlet in Southampton. Overtaken by the Wellington Arms and The Guide Dog. Beer quality has changed.
|
Fantastic pub tried a guest ale and an entire stout both were absolutely top notch well worth a visit the also do 4 pint take outs
|
Hopback pub; Summer Lightning, Odyssey, Crop Circle, the unfortunately named Red Devil (wont be tryin that!), also Ringwood Huffkin & Old Thumper the pumpclip display around the bar suggests a decent guest rotation policy. Small L-shaped bar in corner of largish open-plan single-room pub forming a Y around the entrance, light pine tables, cushioned stools, wood-backed settles. Dartboard is prominent in one of the rooms arms opposite a fireplace, above which is a good print depicting Napoleons last troop inspection before Waterloo. Good staff, changed Crop Circle immediately it had run out. Buses back to town stop right outside.

Taken over by a new couple at the end of March this year and what a difference, fantastic beer, full hopback range with ringwood thumper and guest beers. Food is very good as well. Friendly staff, check it out.
|
Excellent Hop Back pub, full range and they also had the Special, Downton Forest King and Ringwood Forty Niner. Very cheap, only 2.05 for GFB, Entire Stout was lovely.
Recommended.

Everything a local should be. Worth visiting just for the Entire Stout.
|
Pub is well liked by real ale drinkers and the pricing is very reasonable. However the pub really does need some atmosphere injected and the style of the pub is like that of someones house. The customers seem to be mainly older men!

Old fashioned boozer suberb Hopback ales reccomended
|
Fantastic Hopback pub. Good old fashioned atmosphere. Food could be improved, but the beer more than makes up for it.
|
Pleasant pub, local feel about it. Some good ales available

Great beers in the pub and quiz night is always fun, though it can be fairly tough. Good local pub and the beer festivals (twice yearly) are always worth a visit.
|
A Hopback brewery pub with non-smoking conservatory. The real ales on offer always include Summer Lightning, Entire Stout and GFB. There is always at least two more real ales including one guest. The food offering is standard pub fare - not worth travelling for. The conservatory through the back is a no-smoking area and usually has a quiet radio on a talk station. The beer garden has four or five tables on a patio. Well behaved children welcome in the garden. The beer is well worth a walk from Southampton Station, or even further afield.

Went there years ago - sounds like its come along way since then. If Desiree says its good it's gotta be:P (Old college pal)heh this'll freak her out. Sorry Des.

This is an ideal place to chill out, fantastic real ales, the locals are really friendly & all ages - (me!)There is a great patio garden & conservatory too. Maybe these good comments could earn me a few points at the pub quiz on Tuesday night "Quizmaster Bob!"
