Wow! What a brilliant little pub. Not the easiest place to find but as the landlord rightly pointed out you only have to find it once! Hard to fault this place - it oozes character, the beers are sublime (Dawkins Bristol Blonde being particularly good), the landlord and landlady were both friendly and welcoming and there was a lovely laid back vibe to the whole place. If I lived in Bristol this would quickly become my local without a doubt. 10/10 from me :-) Oh and they also do real cider and have Fruhli on tap. Bonus!

Tiny but lovely pub, which i made the mistake of visiting at just after 5pm on a friday afternoon. I found a. sort of half seat to share. I would go back for an early afternoon pint or three though.

My first visit to this pub and what a find. A super little corner boozer with a great atmosphere and a jolly feel to it! My first taste of Dawkins beers (brass Knocker - not totally to my taste but served well) and a pub special - pork pie/cheese/pickled onion and sweet pickle - 3.00 !! They were showing Old Grey Whistle Test on the telly and that brought back a few memories! Several large mirros give a feeling of more space than there actually is and some old Keg Beer fonts to remind you of what was probably sold here a few years ago!
This is a proper pub and is highly recommended. Near the BBC and a short walk down from Clifton Down train station off Whiteladies Road (plenty of buses from the city centre).

It's all been said before. An excellent pub with excellent people and excellent beer. A real throwback to the proper local pubs of yesteryear. A warm welcome from Paul and Dee and a great choice of fantastic quality ales. Good stuff guys.

Suprisingly not reveiwed for about a year, possibly because what other accolade can you add
As said this is an extremely good pub
It was having a festival last week, quality was spot on.
As said before small but lovely pub.
Essential pub to visit if you visit Bristol.

This is one of the best pubs I have ever been, and will ever go to.

Fantastic ale, beautifully looked after by Dee and Paul in a wonderful cosy atmosphere. In the winter they have the open wood burning fire going which is fab, and it's just as nice for a lazy evening summer drink.

A credit to Clifton, and if you like your ale and a warm welcome you'd be silly to miss out. 10/10

This is my favourite pub in Bristol, conveniently near my house! Love the cosy old pub atmosphere. Good beer and excellent wine selection sampled by friendly locals and served by very friendly landlord and landlady. Nice and warm in winter with the fire going, will probably have a valentines drink there this evening; see you there

Like the Portcullis, a real effort made to provide an interesting ale selection and inside it feels like a proper old boozer, good to see Crouch Vale and Nethergate produce in the West country, particularly nice spot for winter supping.

A pub I found by accident near to the hotel I stayed at.
A real find a comfy little corner pub with lots of character, a good selection of beers in good condition and a warm and friendly welcome.

Very quiet on the Tuesday night we visited, although it seems a pleasant enough place. Starting to look a bit tatty around the edges, but that's not neccesarily a bad thing, it just adds character!
It looks as though they were having a quiz night, so it may of got busier if we had stayed around. Worth checking out though, makes a pleasant change from all the bars on Whiteladies Road.

Had a couple of decent pints during the recent Scottish beer festival. Cosy candlelit pub which was pleasantly busy for an early evening.

Took a bit of finding but what a loely riendly pub. The beer was great and enjoyed choosing our beers from the selection available. Had a laugh with the landlord and customers over the lighting of the log in the fire. Was made welcome despite never having been in before.

A gorgeous little pub in a hidden location - best known as a hidden gem only found out about through mates and word of mouth! Especialy enjoyed the boxing day bingo, held by Paul and Dee, which I hear is potentially on the return? Fingers crossed. Brilliant pints and equally as excellent service. Highly recommend this place! 10/10!

Oh dear dear. A grave disappointment.

It was bad from the start. Is a wretched Christmas tree really needed in a pub with such limited space? Maybe this was why it was in the way of the door and why I got tangled up in it. I made my way to the bar where the barman made me feel I was interrupting his conversation with his pals and landlady. A pint of Matthews was had (2.90) and was very good. I sat meself in the corner next to a lukewarm radiator on a bitterly cold night. There were 2 drunken clowns at the next table bellowing out Trivial Pursuit. The landlord joined the party at and by the bar, welcomes abounded around the room. I had another pint,a good White Horse(3!) though again it served with reserve and even suspicion. (Noted Exmoor Exmas, which was 1.89 in Wetherspoons over christmas on sale for 3.30!!!!!) It was like if you were known you were fine, but a stranger sitting at a table was not welcome. The Trivial Pursuit got louder, and despite the landlord, landlady and entourage sitting 3 feet away the noise went around from Iraqis to Pakis to Irish. After 3 times repeating his opinion on why some f*****g Irish nationalist shouldn't be knighted,I asked one of the drunks quite politely to please keep his opinions to himself,to which he "apologised" but still carried on making his views known to his mate. And off he went to the bar to be served more booze with a smile from the barman, despite being drunk.

Glen-you've lost a punter-from all your pubs. Your landlord and landlady aren't as magic as people say,and actually weren't magic in the Hare either. The place will make the wretched GBG for beer quality but for anything else its a big fat zero.
an_ecunemical_matter - 29 Dec 2008 11:09
An excellent little pub made better by the fact that Paul and Dee are running it now for Glen. I went there last night and there was six ales from five different micro's to choose from. Had a cracking pint from Blindmans, followed by a beer from Goff's. There was a great atmosphere in there, and this was on a tuesday night !!

Great little pub.Lovely atmosphere and great beer. The honeyed stout was wonderful. Well worth seeking out.

Re-visited this pub last weekend, having last been there in 1998, and although it had been a sound little tucked-away local back then, I generally found it to have been much-improved under the Dawkins banner. It was a thriving local, very busy, and serving a good range of real ales in reasonable nick. Contrary to the report below I found both customers and staff to be polite enough, although we had to stand outdoors due to severe constraints on floorspace.
I felt that the character of the place had been enhanced and brought to the fore, with a sensible limit on "modernisation" and "branding". If Glen Dawkins continues in this vein, he and his punters should have a bright future ahead of them, but we have all seen small pub chains grow too large, and their ego and self-importance grows with them. Provided he concentrates on local back-street pubs with convivial chat, excellent ales free-of-tie, and sensitive makeovers with minimal branding, and keeps the number of outlets to a select few, this concept has much to commend it. Time will tell.

Great old fashioned pub, with a good selection of real ales. Perfect.

Sorry to sound a dissenting voice. We had eagerly looked forward to revisiting this pub after having spent a delightful saturday here early last year. Then we were in a funky little alehouse with interesting, without contrivance, 60's ambience that had excellent beers and a genuinely warm welcome from the lovely lady behind the bar. When we did return a couple of months ago it was only to find the interior had been reduced to something like mundanity. The service was to say the least indifferent, the clientele appearing rather stuck up and for our visit an obnoxiously pissed up geezer slumped at the bar who let out a foul mouthed tirade in the direction of a Mediterranean looking punter, once the guy had left the pub I should add. And this seemed to be tolerated. To be fair there was a rather cheery pipe smoker at the bar who waved us a hearty farewell, and the beer was half decent. I'd been using this pub for years, my Dad was once a member of the dart team for Chrissakes though you don't need to know this, but this was a very disappointing encounter. By the way, does the previous management have a pub elsewhere in Bristol? Be very grateful to learn where.

my local and favourite pub, great ales, especially the best bitter goffs jouster. friendly locals and staff, an open fire and good music, i loves it.
jimmer - 28 Feb 2007 19:07
Real ale at its best. Secluded enough to feel exclusive but easy to get to. Extensive selection of wine and whiskey, not to mention an ever changing beer list. Great traditional atmosphere, friendly locals, plenty of snacks and top-notch staff. Highly recommended for a visit!
wibblywilly - 28 Feb 2007 18:53
Vastly improved since Dawkins took over. Have tried Goffs, Matthews, Keynsham and Freeminer beers and they were all spot-on in quality terms. Locals are friendly and service efficient.
downender - 16 Feb 2007 10:14
Visited Bristol for a few days, stayed in the Clifton area, so found this proper little pub having looked at this site, as I'm sure you wouldn't find it by accident, tucked away as it is. Good beer, friendly locals (Hi to Ritva and Derek), and to be recommended for those who would prefer a nice pint of real ale (choice of six) in a "local" without being too Royston Vasey!
Myles - 11 Feb 2007 13:57
so glad the pub's here! we've lived in the area for a year & a half and it's a really important place for us locals. it changed hands around last april & is now a proper old style pub. there's a fire & really good music ranging from Bowie to Funkadelic to Groove Armada & a touch of raggae. they have 6 real ales, loads of vino, ciders & quite an array of malt whiskeys...all candle lit to perfection!
the_aardvark - 9 Feb 2007 10:37
Having just moved to the area, this pub was a real find. A great selection of real ales with a different guest ale every month. It's cosy with a great atmosphere and a roaring open fire to keep yourself warm by in the winter! I don't agree with the "'real' surly staff" comment made below, as I have always found the welcome very warm indeed. A lovely local...
JimWormold - 7 Feb 2007 17:48
really nice looking traditional boozer, lots of victoriana & breweriana loved the mock ups of 'dawkins brau' etc (believe its part of a small chain owned by mr dawkins?)great range of real ales unfortunately greeted by 'real' surly staff. not going to rush back
the_minstrel - 22 Jan 2007 22:28
Really nice pub. Only found it when we moved in round the corner, we like our new flat even more now :-)
anonymous - 30 Sep 2006 14:48
great little corner pub attatched to the (now disused)clifton pools (the 1st victorian outside swimming pool and baths in the country). mixes traditional pub style and modern cool, candles on the table and contempory sounds on the cd player. just renovated by new tenant, very airy (and clean!)for a small pub. serves a good selection of lager, cider and cask ale - no nitros here. popular with 'die hards'and students alike. pity there's no garden tho. roasts on a sunday and the obligatory quiz after.
