Slerp is correct - but he had a lot to do with that.........

Stonecoat, Not nearly south enough. Sanderstead is publess.

this pub is a disgrace and should have been shut down manyh years ago! i would strongly advise anyone going here unless you have a death wish. full of chavs and underage drinkers which the managers dont seem to care about. he pub has soo much potential but unfortunatley nobody seems to care about it enough to make it a better place. its lost its soul and become a pub with no character just full of chavs. avoid at all costs. the purley arms or the edge on the other hand are very close by and completley different in comparisson. aim for them instead.

Bit far South for The Slerp?
Stonecoat - 1 Apr 2012 16:31
They need bouncers because they knew stonecoat was coming :)

Popped in this pub after hearing about new management last Sunday lunchtime. What a transformation, a perfect pint of Doombar , nibbles on the bar and what seemed like a constant supply of delicious roast potatoes. This is how all pubs should be on Sundays. Felt so welcome by the new staff, that I stayed for more than I expected to and will be returning soon. Keep it up.

A pub that needs bouncers? Nice!

This pub has improved 100% since the new door staff have arrived, the locals are very friendly to new faces and are made to feel welcome. The new events that have been starting are pretty good shame they have not got more people coming into the pub, lets hope it gets a later license.

I was last in here a couple of months ago quite liked the place. Not the best beer you will get but the clientele is friendly as are the staff. Its an excllent pub to watch sports in.

Being a first time user of this web site, I was absolutly horrified what I read about my local public house on this page. I have only lived in this area for the past 7 months, and I belive that these very outdated reviews do not reflect the pubs character or the friendly atmosphere that I've experienced.

When I walked in to Red Deer for the first time, I was greeted with kindness and respect from both sides of the bar. I think that shows just how much things have chanded in there since the last comments were posted.

Having spent some time getting to know both the staff & the people aroud me, i've found out that this is for the most part is a locals and regulars pub, but is always welcoming to whoever walks through the door.

I've spoke to some of the regulars, who have used The Red Deer for many years as their local, it is apperent, that the current managment and staff have worked hard to turn this pub back around and have gained the respect and admiration from a lot of people. It was commented that things have totally changed, and the atmosphere is now relaxed and enjoyable, which you will discover for yourself when you visit.

Entertainment veries from week to week, but the duke box is always available to listen to your favorite songs, or there are many tv screens for people to watch the news or storting events.
There always seems to be some special offer or promotion running on selected drinks, and I think you should pop in and see for yourself.

Now serving Real Ales at 1.50 a pint. I really cannot be bothered to go in to this cesspit of a pub,I have friends who venture in and will ask them if there is a serious improvement with regard to cleanliness, uncouth yobs and excessive noise levels. As soon as you go passed the Crown and Sceptre heading south you will not find a half decent pub until you get to the Feathers at Merstham ( a way up market hotel style eaterie with prices to match.

This place is a sh1t pit. . . .

When you walk in this place, it's what I imagine it was like to walk into a wild west saloon in 1880, with everyone turning to see the stranger in town.

The service is sound enough, however, the selection is pretty limited. Real Ale enthusiasts will find it grim.
The menu LOOKS nice, but it is dangerous to judge a book by it's cover, my first and last meal there had me studying the "Armitage Shanks" logo at home far too often for my liking.

The atmospehere is as clicky as spanish maracas, with the locals in there looking like something from 'The Deliverance'.
I once dared to put my name on the chalk board for a game of pool . . . You'd have thought I had just pi55ed on their chips for the stares.

The TV's are ALWAYS on, even for non live sport, or simply non event sport.
The World Curling Championship would get an airing in here no worries.

It always had a Chav element, but this has escalated to scary heights since the closing of "The Duke", the Chav safe haven further down the Brighton Road.
They have now turned the Red Deer into a cross between a Middlesbrough Housing Estate and the Jeremy Kyle show. . . Pikey Tastic!

What doesn't help is that the Deer doesn't seemed to be loved by it's owners, with three new managers in there in the space of 9 months.
If this place was taken over by a hard working couple, willing to put the graft in for the long run, then this place has potential.
It's a cracking sized place, with great location in the nicer part of town. Get rid of the scum giving this place a name of shame, and bring back the glory days.
In the interim, I'm afraid it's avoid at all costs, unless 'U iz a pucker Geez, and wanna get mash up'

Do yourself a favour and take a 2 minute stroll to the Purley Arms.

Been in once, generic beers aimed at the chav end of the market. Clean enough, just doesn't offer anything unless you're into cooking lager and tracksuits.

Kelvins_Ferret - 15 Jan 2008 13:08
This pub is my vision of hell, as it is noisy and has no cask ale. It even has the travesty keg version of London Pride. Younger customers who don't mind keg beer and who like mindless noise might like it.
MrGerbil - 20 Oct 2007 15:58
A few of my friends have started meeting up here (3rd Thursday of the month). Staff are friendly.

The only annoying thing is the noise from the various Televisions (usually showing sport)!

Had not been in for a while and it turns out a new manager is in charge and what a difference. The place was clean the food was tasty and the guy serving was very friendly. Will be back.

Poor old Red Deer, tumbling down the ratings. Had its peak with the new takeover a couple or so years back, and has slowly spiralled down ever since, albeit with the odd plateau and peak. Now it seems the front bar is the only one serving until later at night (if it's a Friday or weekend) so service can be frustrating. The staff always seem new but are pleasant enough in that efficient sort of way overworked bar staff have. The music is repetitive. Sport is always on. Beer is cheap. Wine is average. The last time I and Mrs Codsrotten ate there it upset our sense of digestive decency, and quite often the glassware suggests the dishwasher needs attention. The crowd range from old geezers (even older than me) fuelling their budgeoning noses to couples having a chinwag via groups of lively young things. It is still furnished okay with some interesting modern photographs on the wall, but is slowly revealing a tatty aspect to its decor. I'd like to see this pub turned into a real ale wine bar playing ambient krautrock and with an age restriction of 35-plus, except for the strippers on a Sunday lunchtime. Unfortunately it's all popwash and footie, and very busy when the later is an Important Match. Yawn.

Change of entertainment now, no more crappy karaoke. Live tribute acts. Just what croydon needs

After hearing this pub had a bad rep, I thought I would check it out. Looks a bit worn out on the outside but apparently its over 200 years old the interior is well up to date you would be surprised. Very friendly team who work there. Massive pub with a good family atmosphere. Definitely not a chav pub. Check it out it's only 1.70 for a pint......

The beer is cheap but that'll be the only reason for coming here. If you like to sport a Burberry baseball cap this'll be the gaff for you.
Make_mine_a_large - 24 Dec 2005 23:16
Was in their on Friday. Karaoke is ok, nothing special, pub is large and beer is cheap. Service from a dodgy barmaid who looked and acted half drunk, however others were fine. Toilets were broken so had to use disabled ones but security were friendly and helpful. It was an enjoyable night with some nice looking young ladies, however there was a massive fight involving 20 blokes (so I have been told) after we had left. Luckily we missed that. Not sure if I would go back or not.
RichLondoner - 14 Nov 2005 10:57
I used to work in there, was great fun and customers are nice. Sometimes get abit loud at the weekends. Used to have a bad rep years ago tho.

I Love The Red Deer, every friday night 9-12 they have karoake, which is a good laugh with ya mates. Drink isn't too expensive either, gota get there early as it gets busy on a friday and you wont get a seat. but definately a good place to hang out on a friday if your a little low on cash and still wana have good night.
