This is the nearest pub to my house so should be my local but it isnt, cant put my finger on whats wrong with this place but just doesnt work for me! Had loads of owners managers over the years and back around 2005 got good for a while but not recently. Try the Bull up the road which is excellent or the overated but still very good Wrestlers on the other side of the road or only a couple of minutes to the strange Highgate inn around the corner where you could have a great night....or a god awful one!

Went there on Sunday for the weekly show tunes singalong. Very friendly locals (including Porkpie from the old Desmond's TV series) and decent beer. Well worth a visit.

Wednesday evening swing/jazz from small group seems to be on again. Excellent!

I want to love this one, but I can't help thinking it's Highgate Cemetery... for the dead drinkers.

By all accounts the food is good, and the decor a potentially regrettable late-90s makeover-mixed with old traditional style, yet somehow working well and feeling nice and cosy - but the Sunday night singalong is really just unforgettable. And it goes on 'til 1am too. You have to make the trip along for one of these, it's lovely.
The beer is delicious, I had the best pint of Wandle ever here. It's so sad that you walk in on a Wednesday night and the place is empty though, but I suppose it is slightly off the beaten track, and inferior establishments like the Angel and the Prince of Wales are just better located I suppose. Highgate these days is more about the Tories/estate agents eating dinner with their kids up at the revamped Red Lion, but for a real taste of old North London, pop along to this gem.

Went for Sunday dinner and we were surprised to find the pub quite full and a lot of tables reserved, as it is quiet most of the rest of the week. No-one seemed to know what they were doing and one barmaid/waitress told us to sit down and orders for food and drink would be taken. We waited several minutes and I gave up and went to the bar, only to find a large group of people who had come in after us ordering both food and drink at the bar. I gave up after a few minutes and sat down and someone eventually took our order. However, she was diverted or distracted and I had to go up and collect one of the drinks which hadn't arrived. The food arrived very quickly and we requested salt and pepper. These seemed to be taking a long time arriving, which gave us the opportunity to realise that the food was cold so when someone eventually came with the condiments we sent it back for reheating. If there is one thing that should never be cold it is a roast potato and I was put off my quota even when they were reheated. Verdict: the food has been better in the past and the pub can do much better than this. I hope.

Was in here last Wednesday to catch up with a few friends and have some food. Absolutly loved the place. The food was fantastic (I had the Whitebait to start and Porkbelly main) I can see why it had been voted Gastro pub of the year. The bar was really busy, due partly to the Jazz band (I counted 8 players at one point, as well as a sing'a'long by 'pork pie' from desmond's) and the music was brilliant. Keep it up guys!

This pub looks like it's been partially ripped out in the past. There is a back room with walls stripped back to the brickwork (why do they do that?), sofas and neon lighting. Thankfully the rest of the pub is more traditional with tongue and groove on some of the walls etc.
The beer is fine here...Harvey's and TT Landlord etc...some of the best I've had.
Wednesday is swing jazz night which is very enjoyable...I'd highly recommend this establishment.

Totally disagree with the post below. Popped in here yesterday with some friends for Sunday lunch and we all agreed it was fantastic - I personally had the chicken roast which was a very generous portion and cooked to perfection. We will be back, keep it up!

Apart from the infamous Sunday jazz singalong and pub quiz on Mondays this place has been empty all summer - yet has been serving fabulous English gastro food at reasonable prices (average 8.50). It was my little secret. I could believe that instead of being the usual mediocre pub grub it actually made me go 'wow'. Finally someone noticed. They have been made Ham & High gastropub of the year - pretty impressive with all the competition. So popped in looking forward to a quality meal - to find the same menu but a spectacular drop in quality. They served McCains Curly Fries with the fish & chips/Burger and admitted it - and the coffee was instant. With no apology! Complete rip off at the price. Avoid.

Had to post another review as this place has become one of my Highgate favourites. It's unassuming and friendly, the landlord/barman (an Australian gentleman I think) is always welcoming, the food is fine and there's always a good selection of beer. The miniature beer garden is one of Highgate's lesser known pleasures. To top it all they have a free traditional jazz band on Wednesdays led by a former member of the late Humphrey Lyttleton's band.

Last visited here about five years ago when I thought it was rather odd. I revisited recently, a friend having tipped me off it had improved rather under new management. It has retained the lovely green-bricked frontage and the whole pub is adorned by some very nice hanging baskets. The interior is rather standard gastropub fare although it looks better than I recall it doing back in the day. Three handpumps, I think, with ales including TT Landlord and Harvey's Bitter. A decent-looking food menu by the door, although - be warned - there is a more limited selection on Sundays when I happened by. One eccentric touch was that each table had a sheaf of Trivial Pursuit question cards, promoting their Monday night pub quiz! I liked it, and wish the new owners well.

Have lived in Highgate for 4-5 years and seen this pub change hands a few times.
It's a nice place, verging on gastro pub, and quiet too - I can't think of once when we haven't got a table there.
The beer is good and there are some nice little things like board games, a dart board, and even celebrity locals (Porkpie from Desmonds no less) who adds to the collection of Highate eccentrics mingling at the bar.
You may want to avoid Sunday evenings though, as there often seems to be some kind of wartime sing along which is hard to get away from.
As for the latest owners, there seemed to be minimal changes to the interior, but we noticed a new menu and a new friendly barman who often pops round tables to see if you are ok for drinks.
The one big downside with the new owners is that the pub now smells really badly of fried food. They need to sort this out as it's pretty off-putting and hits you as soon as you come through the door.
Maybe take a table in the garden while the weather is nice instead!

The first thing that caught my eye when approaching this pleasant looking pub was the sign on the board outside advertising the Credit Brunch, which consists of breakfast and a pint for 7.95, and I though here we go its another pub thats up its own arse. Upon entering I was presented with the gastro pub that I was expecting, except for the fact that I found it very inviting and Im averse to the general gastro genre.
The barman/manager was very affable and the choice of Ordinary, Landlord and Harveys Best had me licking my lips as the couple of pubs I had been in previously had no ale. I tried the Harveys and the Landlord and thought that they were on good form. There were no standard lagers, but the choice of premium was good enough.
I spotted a projector screen discreetly rolled up above the front windows and the Arsenal v ManUre game was being advertised on a chalk board by the entrance, but this was only being shown as it was on ITV as the pub has no Sky. There is a dartboard in the corner of the pub, but the bar seems to interfere with the oche and if someone was sitting there youd have no chance in getting a game. There is a small beer garden out the front of the pub, but it was closed off during my visit as some carpenters were doing some work to it.
If I could change a couple of things it would be to get rid of the lounge music and the overpowering smell of food, but other than these things I really liked it in here and I would go back again.

Since posting the brief comments in December last year have been back a couple of times and been consistently impressed by the high level of service from the people serving on the bar. Landlord's and at least another respectable beer are on draught (can't recall if hand-drawn or tap) plus a couple of better lagers also on draught in addition to the usual staples of Guinness etc. In addition to the Wednesday evening jazz I think there's a piano-based sing-song routine on Sunday evening as well, perhaps more on other nights?
Good atmosphere, consistent standards.

I am the daughter of PATRICK MORRIS (composer, musicion), who died last year. He was found dead in his house in 2a Southwoodlane on 16. Jan. 2008. The circumstances are rather suspicious and anyone who knew him and can tell me anything about when they saw him last and how he was found and who found him. Please, please inform me. I am living abroad and will come to London soon. Grateful for any information and links. Emma- Serena [email protected]

Pleasant suburban pub, mainly relaxed older set on the Weds evenings I went there a couple of times early in 2008 to listen to the live (free) Jazz... performing were some of same musicians who have appeared at the Wenlock Arms nr. Old St.
(If approaching from Highgate Tube: I found it easier/quicker to get to on foot by proceeding up Archway Rd, turning left into Church Road and then 2/3rd left into North Hill and walking south - seemed quicker than the TfL suggested route).

Really excelent pub, a great atmosphere good staff and most importantly the beer was good. I would certainly come here again.

everytime i visit highgate i have a drink here or at the angel inn, this pub is far superior though.
lovely pub, nice decor, good prices and bar snacks. comfortable sofas and good music, plus if you get the right table theres a hole host of board games to play. pity about the lack of parking. otherwise very good indeed.

Nice cosy little place, I am quite a regular there now, have not tried the food except the chips which are really nice.Friendly staff & good service.

Oh no...it's gone trendy!
This was a really nice little traditional horse brasses and swirly carpet type pub. The carpet has now been replaced with wooden flooring, and the horse brasses by a picture of the late Jim Morrison. The obligatory leather sofas are also in evidence. Very loud canned music was also on offer.
That said, the food was pretty good, though a bit pricey, there's about five real ale pumps (a miracle for a trendy pub) and a nice little beer garden.

proper pub . highgate has a lot of pub which are old-school pubs in terms of aritechture and interiors, but are more manager-led affairs, and have an high customer turn-over . hiowever this is traditional in the way in which it is run and the customers and ambience . locals', but very welcoming pub . five hand-pumps
