We went here 29/12/12 in the early evening. Our two dogs were welcome.Old style cosy beamed pub with open fires.Good range of real ales (about 4 i think).I had "Swift One" my friends had "Timothy Taylor Landlord" and a glass of the house Red wine. All very good.We had booked an early table for food.Good menu including specials and a Gluten free menu aswell. For starters we had the mushrooms, the whitebait and the vegetable soup of the day.For mains we had the burger from the Gluten free menu, the Roast beef and veg in a large Yorkshire pudding and the fish in sauce with prawns. The service was friendly ,quick and efficient. We were asked at least twice if everything was alright by different staff members. The pub was busy. The second sitting of diners arrived at 8pm for our table which we had to vacate.Unfortunately one has to stand at the bar as all the tables are reserved for diners. It would have been nice to continue sitting down to finish our drinks. The prices are slightly higher (£12.95 for the roast Beef) but it is good and well presented with generous portions. It should be noted that The Sun is a Pub that does good food and it is not a restaurant.Pity about the Reserved labels on every table. There are a couple of Car Parks which fill quickly. The country lane had cars parked along it which showed they were busy.We will go here again if we can book a table.

You will almost certainly need to reserve a table to get in here. Have been a few times now and have never been too enamoured with the starters. The main courses are generally very good and you will get good value for your money if you choose something hearty. The big selling point of this place is the atmosphere and the beers - a great range well kept. Could be described as a little claustrophobic; try not to tread on any dogs! Falls a little off the mark as it is so busy, but certainly worth a visit.

great pub. food and beer excellent, yes the tables are often reserved but that must be a good sign, well worth booking a table in advance

This really is a great little pub. The landlady is really friendly and very proud (and rightfully so) of her pub. Staff are good and the food is excellent. Highly recommended.

Having seen this pub advertised I thought it worthy of a 15 mile trip to get to it.
The beer was in good form and having sampled the Itchen Valley Pure Gold and Stonehenge Pigswill the trip was worthwhile. The staff were also efficient and welcoming.
Luckily I didnt want food as the major drawback of this pub is that every table inside (and one outside) were reserved. I felt like I had gate crashed someone private birthday celebration! Must mean the pub is popular (which cant be a bad thing in this day and age) but annoying if you are only passing through and you want to sit down.
Worth a visit just for the ale but book first if you want the luxury of a seat!

lovely old style pub. enjoyed a great few ales with some charming regulars before suddenly being asaulted by an old crone due overly for retirement. After revealing my identity to her I was continually reminded of my past achievements and treated preferentially as apposed to others awaiting service. The staff were charming until her arrival when I suddenly sensed a bit of tension. I was appalled by the treatment of staff upon her arrival and swore to never frequent her pub again. It is a charming place with potential for alot of character but I'm afraid the cheap facade of candles and homely wood fires does little to hide the fakeness

This used to be my favourite 'winter pub'. Got out of the habit of going there for a few years until the Sun featured on a local TV South Programme. Decided to indulge in some nostalgia. On entry nothing seemed to have changed however although we visited early evening and it was not at the weekend all the tables were reserved. My wife and i were thus forced to stand and after 1 drink made a hasty exit, which was a shame as the beer quality was good. Too much of a restaurant now so won't be revisiting.

Despite appearances, rather a disappointment. Lacks conviviality, atmosphere with mediocre beer

New bar staff and clearly vastly improved cellermanship in evidence on my last visit - also the food prices have not increased in line with most other Hampshire pubs. Sadly some of the clientele appear to remain on the retentive side, and one party were most surprised to have booked for one o'clock and be told when they turned up well after two fifteen that the kitchen was closed. Not much you can do, though! The smoking ban has clearly improved the ambience here. Definitely on the up.

Very nice atmosphere, well kept beer. Recommended.

Use this lovely little pub quite often for our "Lady lunches", its a comfortable relaxing little place and the food is homemade and tasty. It is a good idea to book a table as it is a very popular pub... You may even run into a well known TV Gardener/Author.

Could be perfect - but the beer range is faintly uninspired (almost all much of a muchness) and the food menu creeps up pricewise. Not much you can do about braying people in boat shoes - sadly.

Found this little pub by accident and it is tremendous. A little pushed for seating space if you're not eating but the fact that it was full when we arrived is testament to its staff, beer, managment and food. I would wholeheartedly suggest that you book beforehand if you want to eat. Other than having an area for non-diners, other than outside, it doesn't get much better than this.

Lovely country pub with very hospitable landlady. Good range of real ales. Will return.

The landlady must change her colours to suit the customer. She's a Swindon fan. It's true ;-)

A truly great pub run by an awesome landlady who supports Arsenal - can't be perfect! The pub is tucked away along winding Hampshire lanes cut through rolling hills. Worth the trek. Great ales on tap, including guest beers. The menu is huge and does not disappoint - you can chance a table, but good idea to book for a meal. The barstaff are the cheerful, smiling and like what they do! A serendipitous find - I almost want to keep this a secret...

Superb country pub. Good range of ales on tap, and decent food. The starters were disappointingly unadverturous (garlic mushrooms, prawns and avocado, garlic bread, potato skins etc) so save your appetite for the main courses, with a big selection off the main menu and a generous specials board offering steak, venison, and duck amongst others. Decent service particularly as there was a big party in that night. Highly recommended for a hearty meal and decent pint!

A 5 mile Sunday morning walk , then back to the pub. A word of advice - book if you want food! We scraped in, but only just. However, what a pub! excellent range of well kept beers, and excellent food. Not eh cheapest, but this led to an extravagent Sunday lunch . . well 95 for 4. Looking forward to a return.

A truly fabulous pub with massive old Hampshire village atmosphere, excellent beers and fine food. The staff are terrific. A Sunday family rendezvous in the summer was a rare treat. I must return soon!

Re:sun Inn Your first comment by Debby Barns re: Blues Band is incorrect. She was in the Star Inn not The Sun. The two are about 800m apart.

Excellent value for food, nice ales and wines and the food was also very good. To our delight Friday evenings the is a Blues band to make a perfect night out.

Very good, quite difficult to find if you don't know the area, but well worth the look. A must for real ale fans

Beautiful place with a great atmosphere. The locals are an asset as are the bar staff change yearly but are always kept in line by legendary landlady, Mary. The best pub for miles.

Possibly the best pub I've ever been to. Obviously off the beaten track in rural Hampshire though.Open fires, original oak beems, no tv's always busy with a great atmosphere and a friendly hardcore of interesting and diverse locals (an opera critic, builder, steam engine collector and plumber are always at the bar by 7:00).

A quiet, traditional pub (very old building, low beamed ceilings etc)in a delightful setting. Serves real ales, some lager and offers fresh, home cooked food. No music, pool table or darts... just good old-fashioned drinking. This is a really nice pub and worthy of any list! (I dont know the road its on, bentworth is a tiny village!)
