user reviews of The Viaduct, Hanwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I went there this weekend for the first time. The pub was much smarter inside than I expected, the staff were friendly, the service was good, the London Pride was kept well, and the food was good.

Friendly, welcoming Fullers pub. The HSB was in tip-top condition on my visit earlier this week.

Was in last weekend after a while for a friends Birthday and had an amazing time. Service was great and never had to repeat myself which is happening more and more especially in London. Food was flying fromthe kitchen and lovely atmosphere. No surprise as Prices were very reasonable as well and tasted great. Wonderful night.

Prominently located Fullers pub not far from Ealing Hospital and Hanwell Viaduct. The interior is fairly nice. The little doorway between the bar and the lounge through which you have to stoop adds a little character. The pub seemed fairly popular with diners. Pride, Seafarers and HSB were on. Not bad for a Fullers pub, and with far better service than the Fox nearby.
blue_scrumpy - 17 Jul 2011 11:56
OK Fullers pub serving Pride, Seafarers and HSB.
GuideDogSaint - 4 Jul 2011 22:26
Very nice HSB. Was busy for a Tuesday evening probably for the football but plenty of diners too. Mental note to visit again if in the area.

Until a few years ago, The Viaduct was a pub that was looking distinctly run down and somewhat depressing, probably winning the John Bonser award for stickiest and dirtiest pub carpet ever seen. Fullers were struggling to find a new tenant to take it on and there were fears that it might close. Enterprising tenants have given the pub a new lease of life and the pub won a Fullers Best Newcomer Award in 2007 ( or 2006 ?). Sadly, for traditionalists like me, some of the original etched glass was lost in the refurbishment.

Situated by a busy road junction on the main Uxbridge Road a few miles outside Ealing, the pub is named after the nearby Wharncliffe Viaduct which, according to an exhibition on display in the pub until 30 April, was built by Brunel in 1838 to provide a crossing over the River Brent for the main Paddington - Bristol railway line. The exhibition commemorates the 175th Anniversary of this line, constructed in 1835.

We learn that the pub was originally called The Coach and Horses and provided stabling. Some of the original stable building, dating back to the 18th Century, can still be seen at the back of the pub.

A fine glazed tiled exterior leads into a well appointed pub with a food orientated saloon bar and, by passing under an original low doorway in the centre of the pub, a public bar area. This public bar has a dartboard and, on my recent visit, a TV screen which was showing Chelsea v Bolton on my recent visit, but without attracting much interest. The atmosphere and clientele was not that of a typical public bar.

For the duration of the exhibition, the pub is selling the splendidly moreish London Porter on draught and it was on fine form on my visit.

I enjoyed the visit and, whilst admittedly this was largely due to the presence of the exhibition and the London Porter ( both due to disappear shortly ),I'd happily call in here again if passing.

Some parts of the walk (2miles/3.3Kms lasting 1.5 Hours) may be muddy at times. Walking shoes are recommended
GWR175 - 27 Mar 2010 02:17
This pub is the Starting/Finishing Point for the Brunel Walks. Leaflets with suggested routemaps are available at the Pub which includes interesting facts about the Wharncliffe Viaduct and The Three Bridges.
GWR175 - 27 Mar 2010 02:12
From March 23 - April 30 the excellent London Porter will be available at the reduced price of 3.15
Tom1503 - 26 Mar 2010 19:19
As part of the Exhibition, the Mon - Thurs Prix Fixe Menu for 9.50 will be available to members of the association Friday and Saturday as well.

Pulled into the pub after a traffic disaster on the way home. Beautiful patio garden enjoyed by a few punters even though it was quite chilly. Good food.

As part of the 175 year celebration of the anniversary of Isambard Kingdon Brunel Main line, an exhibition is bein showcased in the pub. Warm Welcome to one and all

Ohhh forgot to mention that the lovely flowers on the bar are also paid out of the STAFFS tips!!. Happy drinking!

A very well clean kept pub/Restaurant. I had a close friend who worked here and heres a few pointers that I think you should all know about before adhering praise for this pub. The owners treat their staff like muck, the title of barmaid, waiter or waitress I always thought does not involve litter picking in the garden, weeding or cleaning the shed out or even scrubbing. I saw this with my own eyes and thought it was a disgrace. The majority of staff here are foreign and live above. They are paid a pittence to work here and are deducted a huge amount from their wages for their accomodation. Even the staff do not have a share in tips, it is used for staff uniforms as well as deodarants and the rest is kept by the management which I think is a disgrace. Now ladies if you love your wine..your be astonsihed to know that the wine you are drinking here is not actually the wine lablelled. Next time you ask for a bottle of white or red house wine your see for yourself that the bottle top has already been broken..the wine is of that of a 2.99 cheap horrible plonk..Your see for yourself the staff keep the empty bottles behind the bar available for top up by the false smiling woman owner... I think trading standards will have something to say about this. The owners treated my friend lke muck but they were too smart to continue working here. Now the person who did work here was hardworking, committed and loyal but just was not prepared to work like a pawper. Their own words were ' was like treading on egg shells'. Just pull the staff to one side and ask them...Apart from that, It is a decewnt pub with award winning ales, even though the '3 day rule' keeping the award is not cracked up to what its meant..as the owners who are nothing but money grabbers..cease to tell you that dates are changed as well as selling you shi**y wine albeit with a big smile on their face. I wonder why???
southallchap - 14 Mar 2010 18:47
Was in on Sunday and the place was absolutely buzzing. No wonder. The food was incredible. Probably the best Sunday roast we ve ever had. They alos do the full menu and food was flying out. proves the adage that one must always go to a busy place as food must be fresh at that rate. Yummm.

Flowers on the bar (dont see them nowadays) and spotless loos. Wifey goes there after work and now i will definitely join her.
Saw they do two courses and a drink (pint) for 9.50 weekdays and for OAP its soup/coffee or tea/Main course for 4.95. good value. Highly recommended. DOnt go anywhere else !!!!!! as this place is fantastic value for money. tipped a 10 so service was excellent.
Bartsimpson - 25 Jan 2010 00:51
Had Christmas Dinner here and was brilliant. The landlady even took a photograph on her camera of us and emailed it to us. Great service and fantastic food. Definitely the best place this side of Ealing.
Tom1503 - 17 Jan 2010 15:23
Nice clean pub, friendly (if slightly bonkers) staff.

Beer is generally well served - but a word of warning - if you want something with a mixer the Polish girls who work here will have trouble...

Food generally available and not too pricey... but best to stick to fish and chips as the more ambitious meals do not deliver (was served "off" ham. Especially avoid the speciality Bigos - "Polish Stew al la microwave". It's a weird mess that was served to me with ice crystals in the middle....

I woukd recommend this for a friendly drink as it's (mainly) free of the weirder locals and is quite clean, has friendly staff and good beer.

toxicsherlock - 14 Jan 2010 13:09
I had passed this pub many times but never gone in as I was always in the company of my friend who lived near there and doesn't do pubs (she prefers cafes). So today being up there on my own - arranging the sale of her house so I'm not going to get that many more opportunities to pass it - I wandered in. It's a Fullers pub so I was expecting a decent standard, but considering the dodginess of pretty much all local pubs (and the area) I was well surprised. It's nice. Staff are good, it has the usual range of Fullers plus Gales HSB (Gales now being owned by Fullers in case there's anyone left who didn't know that). I found a little nook but it was unfortunately by the kitchens so moved. There does seem to be a TV room but it's off to one side. The decor is interesting and not too knocked about. Apart from the Fox down by the canal, this would be my pub of choice in the area.
rainlight - 31 Oct 2009 18:51
Well preserved attractive tiled exterior, the interior is split into two main areas. The bar is straight ahead on the back wall on entering, this carpeted area opens up to a slightly raised area on the left with traditional seating and a few bits of railway memorabilia to catch one's interest.
Duck through a very low doorway to the right into an area with a wooden floor, dartboard, plasmas showing Sky Sports and a dartboard. It doesn't have the feel of a saloon/vault though probably as there are a couple of sofas around the fireplace as well as the standard wooden tables and chairs. The closed off door to this area has "Jug and Bottle" marked in the etched glass. Beyond here to the rear a few tables are set up outside adjoining the car park.
Fullers beers, Pride, Discovery and HSB, but no Chiswick or ESB although there are seven pumps available.
Behind the pub is a large building and I wonder whether this was once part of the premises, perhaps stables or even a brewhouse? Research required.
Maldenman - 16 Aug 2009 10:14
Blimey what a change to this place!

Previously this establishment was about as enticing as my Auntie Joyce in a flanelette nightie but now - wow its like my sexy cousin Kim in a maids uniform!

The food looks good, the place is buzzing with locals enjoying a happy pint.

It seems to be well looked after and the sort of place you can settle in for a nice evenings drink with a mature crowd.
EskimoJoe - 20 Jul 2009 16:28
Not surprised to see a clutch of very good reviews for this pub - I thought it one of the best Fuller's houses I've been too. It has a large, U-shaped interior around a long central bar - the far end of the pub perhaps looked more like an eating area, and at the near end there is a dartboard (always good to see) and a couple of games machines. Decent range of Fuller's ales including Gales HSB, which is not always easy to find. I didn't eat, but the food menu was long and looked full of tasty pub grub at reasonable prices (there are even some sandwiches at under 2, which is rare indeed nowadays). I really liked this pub and will return next time I am in Hanwell.
grecian - 17 Jul 2009 09:48
Have to agree with below. Fantastic food. Had the Lamb cutlet with colcannon at 9.50 which was great value for money. Just last weekend i got some from my butcher and he charged me 3.90 for one portion of just meat. Hubby had Pride and apparently was the best he ever had. This place needs more shouting about as it is a gem. Flowers everywhere as well which created a great atmosphere and welcoming to females. Keep up the good work.
lily94 - 1 Jul 2009 18:58
Awesome Place. Went for a B'day party and the food was amazing. Beer in top condition and staff very friendly. Highly Recommended. Become regulars now as the place sparkles. Fresh Flowers always on the bar. GOOO.
Tom1503 - 17 Jun 2009 02:17
Visited this place the one time on a Saturday. The place was absolutely dead only 2 other watching the tv. The barmaid looked bored to tears and her scowl just made me want to drink up and walk to the nearby Fox which was much nicer.
tom1968 - 14 Mar 2009 07:33
Good food, except when the wife and I went there they tried to tell us we couldn't have tap water (along with the beer and wine we were buying anyway along with our meal) and would have to buy bottled water.

"Err, no love, that's illegal."

Needless to say we got the tap water but don't let them try it on with you if you go in there. Kind of follows that despite the nice interior and friendly staff the pub might be struggling, as the Sky TV screen has returned on the far side to try and win back the footy regulars who desserted the place.
aldhous - 27 Nov 2008 15:02
Great pub, great selection of fullers, friendly and well worth a visit, 8/10
fat_beer_badger - 17 Aug 2008 21:37
Saturday night visit with the family - very welcoming atmosphere - nice food - HSB good but cola @2.25 and house wine @4.25 a glass a bit steep. The service was excellent and the waitress extremely attentive. Overall a nice pub which is trying very hard - unusual for London!
dazb - 15 Dec 2007 21:56
Excellent pub, probably the best in Hanwell. Nice decor inside, great Fullers ales on tap, very clean, friendly staff, friendly locals and excellent food at reasonable prices from an ever changing menu.

Decent sized beer garden although it could do with some new tables, big smoking area just been built outside should keep the smokers happy and a reasonable car park.

Won Fullers Best new Pub of The Year in 2006 after a major refurb, still feels like it's going from strength to strength.

ealingwomble - 11 Dec 2007 18:16
Usually good beer but they do have the odd "off" day. Service is a little forced; it would be nice if the bar maids actually smiled every now and then ! Food is excellent as is the wine selection.
jgill49723 - 5 Nov 2007 18:23
My son took me to the Viaduct today and I was pleasantly surprised. A very friendly welcome, good cheap food served quickly and a lovely pint of Pride.
Highly recommended
wal - 2 Oct 2007 14:54
Popped in en route to the Fox & I liked it. Newish look interior with wooden & carpeted areas separated by original-looking partition with tiny door frame at which your head is protected by padding and a notice reading 'Duck or Grouse'. On Tues they had Pride, Discovery, & HSB still on Gales pumpclip. Cheap food including a daily fish special (Hoki & side 4.95). A toddlers play area next to the bar may put off committed drinkers at the weekend? I recall a mental note about spotless loos, so they must have been good!
trainman - 13 Sep 2007 14:23
A solid Fullers pub. Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, good food and well kept ale. Lets see more pubs of this calibre in the Hanwell area!
DrinKing - 21 May 2007 10:07
We were in here over the Bank Holiday and had a good time.Usual tasty Fullers range of beers;food not bad- cheap!- with one or two exotic Polish twists;service very efficient and friendly. All in all, something of an oasis in the Hanwell desert-at least, an alternative to The Fox! We will definitely be back.
georgekaplan - 10 May 2007 15:39
An excellent little pub.

The food is certainly good and the staff very friendly. The lounge is more of a restaurant than a pub lounge which is great if that's what you want but not if you don't.

The bar is good but small but has a big TV on the wall which is not really what I'm after in a pub.

No complaints about the beer though, a good selection and well kept.
stef_install - 1 Dec 2006 16:52
My local. Shame the Sky TV has gone, but they're obviously going for the non-TV audience.

Nice refurb and looks very gastro like.

Certainly recommended for quiet drink stuff, big beer garden too, and the food is excellent.

(The owners are Polish and friendly.)
aldhous - 10 Oct 2006 15:01
A great place. Recent refurb looks great. Have not tried food but music is easy on the ears with good range of beer. Good atmosphere.
AJR - 9 Feb 2006 21:52
This pub has just had a make over and is bright and airy, good Beer & food. They tell that on the last thursday of the month the nurses from the hospital come down to spend there well earned pay. One for the boys to look out for
Boaby - 11 Jan 2006 17:05
A complete dive, just like all the pubs in Hanwell!
CheekyShepherd - 4 Dec 2005 07:30
Has recently won the "Fullers Best Newcomer" Pub Award for 1995.

Quite a friendly relaxed place and the refurbishment is not too drastic

Apparently the function room and the land at the back is going to be used for a new Tesco Metro in the future
JohnBonser - 28 Nov 2005 09:38
I visited this pub the other day and it was fab, great selection of ales which change every month. The refurb is fantastic it really brightens up the place which used to be a bit dull and dreary and the locals are friendly. A definate asset to Hanwell which has some dreadful pubs. Check it out, you will not regret it.
bub - 7 Oct 2005 08:37
What a great pub!!!!
This pub shines like a beacon in Hanwell and many residents are proud to have this one time great pub restored to its full glory. The food is great and the lunch menu is perfectly portioned for under 5.
Well worth a visit.
Pubfest - 5 Oct 2005 22:18
Lovely pub and Fantastic food. The new tenants have really done an outstanding job in this pub. Had a Great night the saturday we went. Highly recommend a visit for the food and guest ale.

Cannot beleive that this Old Fashioned pub is doing Jungle Music Nights. What a disaster
bub - 25 Aug 2005 16:42
I used to be a customer in the Viaduct back in the 70's,is there anyone there who can tell me wether Tony and Liz are still around,or Bridie (Anderson),used to be with Pat Cuff (desiel Pat)or benny Mcaneeny, thanks .

woddi42 - 19 Jun 2005 22:09
Great location. Good beer. Nice refurb.

Clean up the garden! Nobody wants dog crap, broken glass and used condoms with their beer.

briggs - 30 May 2005 17:57
I agree with the previous contributor's sentiments. They were trying a Portuguese Menu last Saturday, but most customers were there for the football. The notorious worn carpet has gone, thankfully. I too wish this pub well - nice to see a pub, that was apparently at risk of permanent closure at one time - now reopened with a new tenant. I shall definitely call in again, hopefully sooner rather than later
JohnBonser - 23 May 2005 12:49
Has now reopened. It has all been done quite nicely without going over the top so what you have is a nice pub with a more traditional standing bar at the East end and carpets and seating at the other. Even the toilets have been renovated! Wine list not bad, beers kept in good condition when we went in and they seem to be trying some things with the food (fairly simple stuff but a weekly menu as well). Wish this place well, it deserves it!
jollid - 19 Apr 2005 16:51
Reopened on 17 March, according to the Fullers website.
Haven't been in again yet
JohnBonser - 7 Apr 2005 12:21
Pub is currently closed for refurbishment - I know this because I went there yesterday - a wasted trip !
( Let's hope Fullers dont spoil the pub too much )
JohnBonser - 14 Mar 2005 13:15
This is a very good pub, certainly the best pub in Hanwell by miles. Head here if you're in the area.
CityGent - 9 Dec 2004 12:04
this was a great pub back in the 70's Betty and Jim Anstiss had it then jack ex brickie
john waddington - 14 Nov 2004 16:35
This pub is a real top banana!
Great staff great beer. clean, great frendly locals!
tip top!
hugh - 13 Sep 2004 19:16
I like this v traditional pub but it's variably popular. Sometimes crowded, sometimes empty. Do a very good pint of Pride though.
