Lamb Inn, Suttonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
The last reviewer said it all - outstanding menu with commensurate prices and highly efficient service. Specialises in game dishes (as its name suggests). TT Landlord, Wincle Poacher and Dunham Massey Deer Beer were the 3 ales on sale yesterday - I didn't try the Landlord but the others were in good condition. I guess at one point there were separate rooms but nowadays there are just partial divisions separating the restaurant from what is loosely a bar area. Very busy yesterday (as it was Easter Sunday) which meant the pub was quite cramped but I can totally understand their desire to serve as many customers as possible. We'd done some prior research using another website and left feeling that we couldn't have chosen better.

New Landlord has wrested the pub from the talons of Punch Taverns so now it is a free house, under the name of The Sutton Gamekeeper. It is excellent. He has totally refurbished it and employed an astounding chef. The team working there are keen and efficient; they genuinely care about visitors' experience. Highly recommended: it is NOT cheap, but you really do get what you pay for. Thing is, as well as being an excellent eating place, it is also a super place to pop in for a beer, with a great atmosphere in the true meaning of a traditional 'proper' pub. Well done James - I for one am highly impressed. Keep it up and I truly wish you every success.

Beer better kept now, and has a community atmosphere. Wish the new landlord all the best; it's obvious he genuinely cares about the place and is determined to give it his best shot.

Just like to say that the old landlord has now departed and the pub has had makeover. The pub is back to what it used to be like , a good village pub with good beer, food to come and filled with locals and run by locals. Nice to see it back to normal, anybody wanting a decent pint, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Well after visiting the place quite a few times, it appears that the more critical reviews are correct - they've made a right sodding hash of it. It may have helped if they had actually moved in, rather than commuting from Oldham to open. Closing Mon-Thurs and only opening Friday 7 - 10 wasn't the shrewdest idea. I understand the landlady is ill, but she was before they took the place; what were they thinking? On speaking with him, he appears to be an idiot, complete with vacant wide-eyed naive gawp, like a child gazing at a fairground goldfish. I've not even heard of a decent pint there - all the ones I've had have been shite and the food was laughable... if you were observing other victims that it. Cut your losses and leave now. Do not pass 'Go'. Do not collect 200.

Interesting to note that all of the positive reviews have been made by people who have joined BITE shortly before reviewing, and have never written any review about any other pub before or since. Call me cynical, but I think that more than a little suspicious.

I ate in this place recently and have now come accross this review site. Very interesting...the in depth, detailed reviews are highly critical where as the 'two liners' are favourable...sounds suspicious to me and I think J. Bean's recent comments: "sounds like the Land Lord to me"-11/4/10 may have an element of truth. I am a trained Barrister and I smell a rat! If this is the case, and I strongly believe it to be, I suggest the Landlord concentrate more on the in depth reviews and making appropriate improvements and less on producing two line responses to counter them. This helps nobody in the long run. As for my visit (Wed. 28th April 2010), all I can say is that I echo the in depth, well thought out comments of; sj32 and J. Bean. The service was shoddy, the meal was bland and the general atmosphere, well, imagine a Mortuary - you get the idea. I will re-visit this establishment in a few months to see if the Land Lord heeds my advice, ie - less two line ripostes and an attention to basics when it comes to service (improved manners), meals (hire a new chef) and hygiene (the toilets were dirty). At this time I recommend that any readers give this place a wide berth. In a few months, and upon my next visit, I will repost a further update in the hope that there are some improvements that I can report upon. I hope that this proves to be the case. D. Bailey.

Ate here on Friday 23rd /4 2010. First time I have seen Monkfish Cheeks on any menu. Fantastic food, we met the chef and we stayed for some live entertainment afterwards. First time I have been in the Lamb since the new management and what a difference.

I absolutely assure you that my review (Mr J. Bean) is how I experienced my visit on the occasion that I visited this Pub. Feel free to make your own mind up but rest assured, I will not visit this place again - once bitten twice shy! This is not a 'hatchet job', just a review of my families meal - which was an abortion. Just because a comment isn't favourable does not mean it's inacurate. Incidentally, I rather doubt the authenticity of 'sihamel', sounds like the Landlord to me...

Hey See my previous review, this is an honest pub with good grub, I follow MTFC and have eaten here regularly for months, and I do mean months! match days and others, read the real reviews like mine, and gregst, not the competition hatchet jobs, see you on the rose. simon

My family and I visited this establishment recently. Our intention was to dine. I wish I had read the comments of slj32 prior to our visit. Her comments of 'absolutely awful' are, in my opinion, restrained. My partner ordered burger and chips which she shared with our young son. Our son would normally eat anything and was ravanous by the time it eventually arrived (with dirty cutlery). I had not previously witnessed my son reject food before but they say there is a first time for everything, and this was it. My wife ate part of her meal and out of manners stowed the rest away in her bag to feed our dog upon our return. The food remained in his bowl for 2 days before I eventually placed it on the compost, I fear it will take some time to de-compose. I ordered the lamb chops. Once I had separatedthe fat from the bone I was left with a scrap of meat that would not satisfy a sparrow. When asked by my wife : What did it taste like? I informed her that I had eaten less chewy squid. We reluctantly paid the bill afterwards our barely eaten meals were taken away by a child that reminded me of the Film - Village of the Damned. We then left without leaving a tip. Our tip to the reader is to try an alternative venue to eat or drink. In our case we visited a Hot-Dog stand on our way home for a nutritional boost.

wow...erm.. what can i say, nothing like review on here.
I have eaten here today, quick lunch, found a full bar, a set side (glasses etc) for food and a roaring fire on the other. Myself and my friend had fillet steak, it was great!! melt in the mouth stuff and a portion of REAL chips (these were the best I have had in many a meal). It was good/fresh/tasty food and good beer just what was needed. Will be back

What can I say - absolutely awful!
We called in for Sunday Lunch - there was nobody behind the bar to serve - eventually a lady appeared about 6 minutes later (this was the Landlady) she offered no apology simply advised that if we wanted food there was a bit of a delay. We asked how long as there were only 3 other tables - 1 already had its food the 2 tables (one party of 3 people the other was a couple) were the only other people waiting. The landlady went to check and advised us it would be 20 minutes - this seemed very reasonable so we went ahead and ordered.
We ordered two of the two course Sunday lunches and a burger with wedges for our son. Our soup arrived - mine was stone cold - seems it was put in the bowl but the chef (Landlord) had forgotten to heat it up! It arrived the second time - it was described as 'creamy' parsnip - more like pureefied baby food with half a bag of sugar disgusting - I did not eat it and was not looking forward to my main course.
About 45 minutes later our main meals arrived - we were lost for words. We were not given cutlery, napkins or any condiments, when we asked for some the landlady instructed her (7 or 8 year old) son to get these for us. He 'banged down' some cutlery but nothing else.
My son had the burger with wedges - the bun was solid and burnt - there were plenty of wedges albeit they were very very over cooked, he also had onion rings (at least thats what we assumed they were) they were burnt to a solid crisp - and hollow!!
My turkey.... it was 3 round slices - I have never seen a 'round' turkey in my life. It was meant to be accompanied with Parment Potatoes and vegetables - it arrived with tiny square potato pieces, which had clearly been deep-fried to a crisp looked very much like the scrapings from the bottom of a deap fat fryer and solid vegetables. My husbands welsh lamb chops looked like 3 little pieces of fat placed on top of the parsnip soup I had sent back which was described as 'creamy mashed potatoes'.
At this point we decided enough was enough - we got up and advised the landlady we would not be continuing with our meal, as it was appalling - we offered, reluctantly, to pay for the 2 soups. The Landlord then appeared from his kitchen and decided to point out that he totally disagreed with us and that his food was perfect - I really don't think he has any idea of what good quality cooking is - he was quite aggressive towards us and as he was a large stocky gentleman we felt quite intimidated by him - he instructed his wife to take our money for the soup.
During our visit we were not the only people to complain the only other 3 tables also passed comments / complaints to the landlady.
I would strongly suggest that this pub employs more staff and a qualified, competent chef! Also a lesson in customer service would be advisable for both the landlady and landlord - give this pub a very wide birth - keep walking down the road until you reach the highly recommended 'Olde Kings Head'.
